Is an Anti-Static Wristband necessary?

As long as you touch the power supply every once in awhile, you should be good. I've never used those dorky looking wristbands and have never had a problem.

WD hard drives...any good?

I love my WD drives. Last 3 drives I bought have all been WD's. Before them, I used primarily Seagate and IBM, but now WD all the way.

WTF? Notepad trying to contact the Internet

Install Microsoft AntiSpyware and scan your system. Also the free AVG virus scanner. Between those two, you should be able to get your system cleaned up.

Bad Hard Drives: What to do with them?

You could degauss the drive by running it over a powerful magnet. Otherwise, removing the platters and incinerating / pulverizing is probably the safest and most effective solution.

Movie backup question for friend in Costo Rica

I think they make some DVD player / DVD Burner for your living room, but they don't have anything to do with computers. However, due to the encryption on 99% of DVD's, this probably would not work for making backups of his DVD's (not sure though, so it still might be worth looking into). Also...

ATI MMC issues

I have recently installed the ATI MMC 9.08 software, in addition to the Catalyst 5.5 video drivers on my AIW 9800. Everything seems to be working okay, but I am getting some wierd violet colored numbers in the top right hand corner of the screen. It looks like a readout of the frames per second...

how many computers do you have?

Had 8, but gave two away to my family, so now I have 6, 2 of which are laptops and the other 4 are desktops, ranging from P3 500 up to an Athlon 64 3000+ (and some Pentium 4's in there too).

Why the step back to LCD's?

My 20.1" LCD is the equivelent of 22" CRT, in terms of screen size, and I paid a very reasonable amount (around 600 w/ shipping and tax). Also, I get no eye strain or any other problems with my LCD, and I use it a minimum of 10 hours a day. Lastly, my LCD runs very cool compared to a CRT, and...

"Turn off hard disks" in Power Options

Agree with others. I never let my drives be turned off by power management. About the only thing that's good for is the monitor. If you have a laptop though, and want to conserve battery life, that may be the only time you ever let the power management turn anything off besides your monitor.

Pagefile location?

I usually setup my page file on my 2nd drive, in your case, the data drive. However, if you are really worried about it, why not just create a page file on both?

I have read lots of good reviews about the DFI LanParty NF4 boards. Perhaps you should do some searches and see if you think one of these types of mobo's will meet your needs.

Cleaning LCD monitor

A nice little microfiber cloth should do the trick. I use one I got from fellowes, which I originally used to clean my DVD's. Works good on LCD's too.

how can I tell if I need more RAM?

Go download TinyResMeter. It's a nice little freeware program that comes up in a little GUI window and displays CPU utilization, memory utilization, page file utilization, etc. in real time. Can be very useful in getting a visual on what your system is doing.

BSOD Please Help

So a windows update gotcha. I have seen this before on a server (of course, that was a windows 2000 machine, but sounds very similar). Had to go and uninstall the offending patch. Kinda tricky though. Did you have SP1 on before you went up? Maybe better to download and install SP2 "before" you...

Want to spend ~$125-150 MAX on a video card...

I would go looking for a 4x AGP card. Perhaps an older ATI Radeon, such as the 9500. You should be able to pick one up @ newegg in his price range.

question about heatsink/processor

Most heatsinks sold today come with a small packet of thermal grease that you can apply to the bottom of the heatsink, where it makes contact with the processor. If you're not overclocking, this thermal paste will usually do the trick for you. However, a lot of folks swear by aftermarket thermal...

Anyone ever use the Panaflo H1A 120mm Case Fan?

No, but I had a Delta High CFM fan once, and it sounded worse than a vacuum cleaner running. You couldn't even hear someone talking to you from 5 feet away. That lasted about 10 minutes before it got yanked...

Are WD drives really all that noisy?

I've had both the SeaGate and WD drives, and I can't really tell the difference. With my case and CPU fan, and my PSU going, I never hear any HD activity. I would guesstimate the overall db of my system is between 36db and 40db, which is probably average (it wasn't built to be completely silent...

Buying an Athlon 64 system, need advice

computer overheating?

I would suggest taking off the case cover for awhile, and installing motherboard monitor to check cpu temps. It may be a case of your heatsink/fan not being powerful enough. You could pickup a thermaltake silent boost k8 or one of them nifty setups with the heatpipes, and that should go a long...

to newegg refurb buy or not is the question

I too have heard good things about Geil and Patriot. I have Corsair VS, which is good value, but I don't know how overclockable it is. You can get 1GB of Corsair VS for 80 dollars from chiefvalue.com.

Forums -> why do people pay for them when the free ones work very well?

I refuse to pay to post or read on any internet forum. I think it would be a waste of hard earned money, but that's just me. If you have enough people interested and motivated to pay for use of the bulletin, then I would imagine that would be a pretty motivated group, and perhaps that is the idea.

Not using native res on Dell 2001FP - how bad for games?

IMO, the best resolution for gaming on the 2001FP is 1280x1024 or 1600x1200, if your game and vid card support it. I don't have a single game that I cannot play at one of these two resolutions on my current setup. I have not tried 1024x768, so you will have to try it out and see for yourself...

Best air flow is when you use no filters at all... If your rig is running pretty cool already, then you can afford to use a filter, which will probably increase case temps a little bit, but you will have to experiment and keep an eye on your case and cpu temps...

Reformatting, and need backup help

Some programs have compression built in. When I use ghost to make an image of my drive, there is the option to select fast, which is no compression, and maximum, which is the highest level of compression. Also, you could probably go through and add them to zip files or rar files to further...
