Thanks for this. I stopped by my local OD to check this out and to probably order it. But the manager told me it was a $69 shipping fee. That kills it for me. After the upgrade and shipping I'm looking at $445 plus tax, and I think I can probably do better if I shop around. (And if not...

OK, I'm happy to report that my earlier statement (about that model number being for a 7200.8 drive) is incorrect. Apparently they haven't updated the model number between revs, because I got a 7200.10 in the box. Thanks OP! And thanks to all who refused to accept my semi-TC.

I looked up that model number (ST3400632A) and found a thread at StorageReview.com from 2005 which says that drive is a 7200.8 model. In other words it's two generations back now. No wonder it's cheaper than the other Seagates on the Frys.com site. Presumably, they're dumping the really old...

There is no "2006 deadline" of any sort. You're entitled to one from each of the 3 agencies every 12 months. In other words, it's not per calendar year. So there's no need to rush, and no need to get all 3 right now. I echo compudork's suggestion to get a report from a different agency...

I didn't have any trouble putting mine behind an old (not even wireless) SMC Barricade router. In fact, I never configured anything. Just plugged it in and after about 2-3 minutes, the phone LED went green and I had dialtone. Have you tried putting it in front of your router?

Well, I finally got the deal. Just called back this morning, hit the Cancellation department option, and told the nice lady I wanted the deal. She said that any time you're within your 31-day trial period and there's a deal you like better, you can be switched to it. So I did.

JFYI, if you ordered this from Amazon, then it's the newer MR814v2, which does NOT have the NTP bug. Whatever you do, DO NOT update your v2 with the MR814 "bugfix" firmware, because it'll kill your router. FWIW, the 814v2 my friend just got from Amazon yesterday already had the latest (5.01)...

As near as I could tell, there is no Region 2 problem. The drive defaults (or at least used to) to R2 after a firmware update. This caused some people to freak out because Windows kept reporting that there were only 2 more changes allowed, and so they didn't want to update their firmware...

Sorry, but this is a pet peeve of mine. The Dish PVR is ABSOLUTELY NOT a TiVo. It's more like a harddrive-based VCR than a real PVR. The correct term for it is DVR (Digital Video Recorder vs. Personal Video Recorder). A TiVo actually has brains, and will literally change the way you watch...

I've been using this Spamihilator proxy software now for about 40 hours. Very nice. Based on the same SpamAssassin engine as what I was using before (SAProxy) but this one is 100x easier to "teach" when it gets something wrong. Thanks LaaDDuh!
