File Recovery after format and Windows re-install?

A friend of mine recently re-installed Windows XP on his machine, but he forgot to backup some items beforehand (I know...). So, I immediately told him to stop using the computer until I could find a decent file recovery software and try to recover whatever was possible. Problem is, I don't...

VPN connection to SBS 2003 network

Well, apparently there's something that eludes me. I got DHCP, DNS, WINS an RRAS configured, yet still VPN client can't see the computer list in Network Places. I don't know what else to do, I've tried pretty much everything I could find. Any ideas? If you some screenshots of my configurations...

VPN connection to SBS 2003 network

UPDATE: I fixed WINS (reinstalled) and it's now working. I haven't tried the VPN since I'm inside the LAN now, will try it later today. I noticed that some Windows Vista machines still don't show up in Network Places. Is there something that I need to configure in Vista?

VPN connection to SBS 2003 network

Windows XP. Haven't tried with Vista yet. WINS is not configured. It is installed, however when I try to enable it it gives an error with the code 536870911. The services won't start :S

    GPO newbie, some questions.

Exactly what I was thinking. That's why I didn't do a lot of tweaking to the default GPO, just minor esthetic changes to the OS, stuff that I want applied company wide. Heavier restrictions such as prohibited apps, etc. will have to go into their own GPO. I was just asking if this was the best...

    GPO newbie, some questions.

Post - GPOs Newbie So I just started with Group Policy. I’ve enabled a company wide policy, which I applied to the Default Domain Policy GPO. It’s pretty basic stuff, a company wallpaper, company screensaver, some IE and Start Menu configurations, Windows Update interval and options, etc...

Change desktop wallpaper via registry GPO

I want to create a single wallpaper so all our users use the same one. I know this can be done through an Active Desktop GPO, but I don’t want to use Active Desktop. It uses HTML, makes everything look like crap and the desktop performance drops. So, I’d like to know how to create a GPO that...

dns BTW, L2TP works from inside the LAN. I believe it's a port forwarding issue.

VPN connection to SBS 2003 network

I was able to connect via PPTP from home without problems. I'll give L2TP a second try today and see what happens. I used PPTP with EAP, User Certificates and 128-encryption. Mac and Windows PCs both connected to the network ok. However, in the Windows PC Network Places is empty. Shouldn't it...

VPN connection to SBS 2003 network

I want to enable VPN access for our mobile users, so they can access local shares and resources while on the road. For that, I’ve followed the steps in the Small Business Server admin guide, but I still have some problems. The configuration is as follows: Server is Windows Small Business...

Windows Vista machine can't access shares in the domain

One of the machines (Vista) is in the domain. The Win 7 box is not, but I can access share on all the other servers (after entering user name, domain and password). Yes, I can ping the machines. Latency and/or dropped packets is not the issue. The network type is set as Work.

Windows Vista machine can't access shares in the domain

I just got a Win 7 machine up and running, and this one also is not able to access the shares. It's really strange, this is the only server both machines have problems with. I won't even asks for a password, it just refuses to connect.

Windows Vista machine can't access shares in the domain

I don't have any restriction policies in place. This machine was able to access the share at one point, the problem started a few weeks ago. I don't know what to look for, it's been driving me nuts.

Windows Vista machine can't access shares in the domain

Hi, We have four servers, two of the running Windows 2003 and the other two running Windows 2008. The domain controller is on the Win2k3 boxes. One of our client PCs cannot access shares on one of the servers (2008). I have checked the users permissions to the share and they're all ok, he...

Horrible I/O performance on our servers

RAID 10 has been working very well so far. I'm thinking about upgrading our oldest server (JBOD) to RAID 10, since I have 4 250GB drives not being used.

Horrible I/O performance on our servers

I know, and since the move to RAID 10, our users no longer complain about performance. It seems the benchmarks don't really reflect on real world usage. The server doesn't appear to be slow, it's quite snappy actually.

Horrible I/O performance on our servers

Made no difference. I don't know what else to do at this point. Incredible fast reads, but writes... no so much. What's wrong with this benchmark? I mean, reads scale so well, why won't writes scale as well? They drop abysmally after 128KB (which is exactly the stripe size I'm using). Beyond...

Horrible I/O performance on our servers

Allright, by popular demand I've updated the firmware to 1.82 an run the benchmark again. F/W 1.82 results w/queue depth of 8 F/W 1.82 results w/queue depth of 4 One thing I noticed was that after upgrading the firmware I had the ability to enable advanced write caching options, so I did...

Horrible I/O performance on our servers

Small update: Using ATTO with a 32MB length and a queue depth of 10 gives me 420MB/s reads and 100MB/s writes. I tried to perform real world tests and did the following: 1. Copied Ubuntu 9.04 iso image (698MB) from Serverhp3 (RAID 1 of two SATA drives) over Gigabit ethernet. It copied the...

Horrible I/O performance on our servers

Alright, this is getting ridiculous. I've spent the past two hours working on this server. I installed two more drives, created a RAID 10 with 6 10k SAS drives and restored the system. The RAID 10 uses 128K stripes. This is the controller confguration: Remember that I used to get 17MB/s...

Horrible I/O performance on our servers

That's great I/O for just two drives! I've just received the two additional SAS drives, so I'll be re-creating the array over the weekend and post back my results. If you could get 225MB/s writes with only two drives, I hope to go beyond 300 using a 3-disk stripe of 10k SAS drives.

Vista PCs not showing up in Network Places under XP

Sorry for the lack of information. We have a Windows 2003 domain and all PCs are part of it. It's just weird that I can't see some Vista machines from XP/2003 but they are visible from Vista/2008

Vista PCs not showing up in Network Places under XP

So, If I browse Network Places from an XP or Win 2003 machine, I can 18 computers. If I do the same from a Vista box or from one of our Windows 2008 servers, I can see all 24. What's up with that? Has anyone seen this before?

Horrible I/O performance on our servers

I've just ordered the drives, but they won't be here for a few days so I'm gonna have to wait to the weekend to set up the RAID 10 array. I've had a few users complaining about access speed with some apps on the server, which I suspect are related to the abysmal write performance.

Horrible I/O performance on our servers

I know, thanks! Rebuilding the RAID 5 array at this speed would take forever, so I'll just switch to RAID 10. Using 6 drives in RAID 10 will give me the exact same usable space so I'll just create snapshots for both volumes (OS and Data) with Acronis True Image, re-create the array, boot into...

Horrible I/O performance on our servers

My bad. It's only 128MB of cache, but still... write performance is very low. I might just get two more drives and switch to RAID 10. Thanks for the FW links, I'll see if I can update them.

Horrible I/O performance on our servers

Well, using the CLI ACU doesn't seem to do anything. I diasabled the write cache, enabled it back again, modified the cache ratio and all... it still tops at 17MB/s with the AJA System Test. controller slot=0 modify drivewritecache=enable controller slot=0 modify cacheratio=25/75 I also...

Horrible I/O performance on our servers

Yeah, I've been browsing the HP forums for the past few hours trying to find a solution. I'll take a look at the array configuration, maybe there's something wrong there. I remember it was configured at 50% Read 50% Write performance. Changing those settings may have a positive impact.

Horrible I/O performance on our servers

Hey guys, This morning I decided to run some test to benchmark the I/O performance on our servers, since it's saturday morning and there's no one here. The first test was with the AJA System Test, which is not exactly a server-grade random read/write test, but running the same test on all...
