Thanks for the responses... Good points about it running at lower clocks and core utilization when the additional power is not needed. Based on that I think I'll go with the quad... Are there any drawbacks to choosing the quad core (aside from price)? Also good call on the RAM upgrade--I think...

Are there any SSDs with hardware encryption, must be 6Gbps SATA III

Hello all! Does anyone know of any current SSD drives featuring hardware encryption (like Intel 320 drives) but supporting 6Gbps SATA III connections. The key is that I need to see how the SATA HDD password is set on the drive. It looks like the Vertex 3 Pro supports hardware encryption...

I looked at the Alcatel products and did find an 8-port SFP switch (OS6855-U10) for $2350 (not including any SFP modules). This is about the cheapest pure fiber switch that I have seen. Spidey: I think you're right... there's a design issue happening here. Because this is a small environment...

This is a nice switch that would do the job... but this unit has 12 SFP ports when I only need 4! Having 12 ports raises the cost on this model to $5600--and that's without any MiniGBIC modules included!

Needs to be 1000 base SX, but inexpensive. We have a hub-spoke network with a core switch. The core switch has 4 fiber runs coming out of it that go to four different buildings. The fiber coming into each building terminates in a single switch that has 24-48 ethernet ports to serve the devices...

Denithor-- I really appreciate the time you took to put together that quick comparison. I'm thinking you might be right... if the price difference between a good Phenom II setup and a Core i7 setup is really only $150-$200 it might well be worth it to just bite the bullet and go with the Core...

The more I think about this issue, I am really leaning towards going with the Phenom solution. It just doesn't make much sense to me to invest in Intel's last generation when that path is pretty much at an end and Intel is moving on to the Core i7/i5 platform.

Just when I think it is safe to upgrade

I would say that during all of 2007 and 2008 it was pretty safe to just purchase the best Core 2 Duo or Quad you could afford... yeah, you had to choose between dual or quad core... but you can't really go wrong with either choice... then all of a sudden here comes Core i7, the end of Core2, and...

That's why I'm thinking that the Phenom II might be a good compromise... it performs well, is priced aggrssively, and has good options for ongoing socket-compatibility. I agree that I don't need an i7... it'd be nice, but I don't want to pay that much right now. ...and Core2Duo/Quad would be...

Even when I have a free Molex connector that I can use with the supplied adapter? Wouldn't this really come down to how many watts I'm currently using for all the other internal devices and how close I am to hitting the 450W limit of my PSU (ie. how much headroom is available)?

Thanks for your response... The PSU has been in use for 2.5 years. I have a 24" monitor and usually play games at 1920x1200... sometimes lower depending on the game. I know my CPU/chipset/RAM is in need of upgrading... I am planning on doing the GPU now and the rest of it in like 4...

No, it's not a 404 error, or any other IIS error, such as IIS 403.6 forbidden IP error, etc. I just get the standard IE "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error... like I typed in the hostname incorrectly or something. I am pretty confident that the traffic is not making it through...

Thanks for your response. I will try turning off 'fixup' on HTTP traffic... but I need to learn how to do that first--I am a n00b when it comes with Cisco CLI commands. I created that service group while I was testing and just haven't removed it yet. Eps.
