    New laptop: 2core i7-3520M or 4core i7-3720QM

Are there any drawbacks to choosing the quad core (aside from price)?

    New laptop: 2core i7-3520M or 4core i7-3720QM

Thanks for the responses... Good points about it running at lower clocks and core utilization when the additional power is not needed. Based on that I think I'll go with the quad... Are there any drawbacks to choosing the quad core (aside from price)? Also good call on the RAM upgrade--I think...

    New laptop: 2core i7-3520M or 4core i7-3720QM

Hey all, I'm about to get a new laptop and need to choose between the Core i7-3520M (2.9GHz, Dual Core) or the Core i7-3720QM (2.6GHz, Quad Core). Which one should I get and why? Pricing is not a concern as they are only $40 different. I am want performance, but wonder if the Quad Core...

Are there any SSDs with hardware encryption, must be 6Gbps SATA III

Hello all! Does anyone know of any current SSD drives featuring hardware encryption (like Intel 320 drives) but supporting 6Gbps SATA III connections. The key is that I need to see how the SATA HDD password is set on the drive. It looks like the Vertex 3 Pro supports hardware encryption...

4-8 port fiber switch -- does this type of switch exist?!

Thanks all for the feedback. I will be recommending the proper solution instead of a 'square peg in round hole' solution. ;)

4-8 port fiber switch -- does this type of switch exist?!

I looked at the Alcatel products and did find an 8-port SFP switch (OS6855-U10) for $2350 (not including any SFP modules). This is about the cheapest pure fiber switch that I have seen. Spidey: I think you're right... there's a design issue happening here. Because this is a small environment...

4-8 port fiber switch -- does this type of switch exist?!

This is a nice switch that would do the job... but this unit has 12 SFP ports when I only need 4! Having 12 ports raises the cost on this model to $5600--and that's without any MiniGBIC modules included!

4-8 port fiber switch -- does this type of switch exist?!

Needs to be 1000 base SX, but inexpensive. We have a hub-spoke network with a core switch. The core switch has 4 fiber runs coming out of it that go to four different buildings. The fiber coming into each building terminates in a single switch that has 24-48 ethernet ports to serve the devices...

4-8 port fiber switch -- does this type of switch exist?!

I've been looking for a small fiber switch that has in between 4-8 ports (empty bays to populate with SFP/Mini-GBIC modules). I found a HP ProCurve model that has 16 ports... and some normal ethernet switches that have 4 bays built in... but I have not been able to find a switch that is just...

Best place to get ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme?

Putting together an i7 920 build. Will be using Asus P6T mobo. I've got the CPu already, but will be ordering the mobo in the next day or two. It looks like the ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme is top notch... but Newegg doesn't have it! Where are people buying this heatsink? I saw someone...

Which CPU/Chipset to bank on for mid-range sytems?

Denithor-- I really appreciate the time you took to put together that quick comparison. I'm thinking you might be right... if the price difference between a good Phenom II setup and a Core i7 setup is really only $150-$200 it might well be worth it to just bite the bullet and go with the Core...

Which CPU/Chipset to bank on for mid-range sytems?

The more I think about this issue, I am really leaning towards going with the Phenom solution. It just doesn't make much sense to me to invest in Intel's last generation when that path is pretty much at an end and Intel is moving on to the Core i7/i5 platform.

Which CPU/Chipset to bank on for mid-range sytems?

Shady28, you must be talking about the Phenom II X4 940 in specific, right? The Phenom II 920 and 910 are much closer to the performance of the Q6600 and E7500 than the Q9550... at least that's what I think I'm seeing in the benchmarks from Anand's review. I will be purchasing a new mobo and...

Just when I think it is safe to upgrade

I would say that during all of 2007 and 2008 it was pretty safe to just purchase the best Core 2 Duo or Quad you could afford... yeah, you had to choose between dual or quad core... but you can't really go wrong with either choice... then all of a sudden here comes Core i7, the end of Core2, and...

Which CPU/Chipset to bank on for mid-range sytems?

That's why I'm thinking that the Phenom II might be a good compromise... it performs well, is priced aggrssively, and has good options for ongoing socket-compatibility. I agree that I don't need an i7... it'd be nice, but I don't want to pay that much right now. ...and Core2Duo/Quad would be...

Which CPU/Chipset to bank on for mid-range sytems?

I just read Anand's article about the new AM3-compatible Phenom II CPUs. The one topic I was looking for and didn't see addressed was the question about what technology is best to invest in, in terms of that CPU/Chipset's upgrade path, for mid-range systems. Yes, for ultimate performance, go...

Can a PC play Co-Op Left 4 Dead with Xbox 360?

Will this 750W PSU suffice with my XFX GTX260 c216?

WaitingForNehalem: You might not want to hear this... but you have been pretty vocal about pimping out the PowerPC PSU to the point where you almost come off as trolling. ...and after all of that you end up returning the PSU that you just finished trying to convince everyone else to purchase...

    Corsair or PC pwr/cooling???

This actually does look like a pretty good deal for a much more powerful PSU -- 800W! The reviews at Newegg are pretty positive... not perfect, but pretty good. Hey, OCNewbie, can you provide the link to where JonnyGURU recommended this PSU, and the excellent reviews you mentioned? Thanks!

Will my existing PSU work with this new GeForce GTX 260

I just came across another thread in the PSU sub-forum where someone was asking a very similar question... and everyone told him to upgrade the PSU first. It looks like this really comes down to a limitation of available power on the 12v rails specifically. Here's the thread I am talking...

Will my existing PSU work with this new GeForce GTX 260

Even when I have a free Molex connector that I can use with the supplied adapter? Wouldn't this really come down to how many watts I'm currently using for all the other internal devices and how close I am to hitting the 450W limit of my PSU (ie. how much headroom is available)?

Will my existing PSU work with this new GeForce GTX 260

Thanks for your response... The PSU has been in use for 2.5 years. I have a 24" monitor and usually play games at 1920x1200... sometimes lower depending on the game. I know my CPU/chipset/RAM is in need of upgrading... I am planning on doing the GPU now and the rest of it in like 4...

Help with Cisco PIX 506e Firewall Access Rule and NAT config

No, it's not a 404 error, or any other IIS error, such as IIS 403.6 forbidden IP error, etc. I just get the standard IE "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error... like I typed in the hostname incorrectly or something. Thanks for your response. I will try turning off 'fixup' on HTTP traffic... but I need to learn how to do that first--I am a n00b when it comes with Cisco CLI commands. I created that service group while I was testing and just haven't removed it yet. Eps.

    Firewall Information

The TZ150 product line maxes out at 10-node models. To get above 10 nodes you would need to get a TZ180/25 node. The good thing is that there's a current promo on the TZ180/25. When you purchase a TZ180/25 between now and the end of 2008 you get a free upgrade to the SonicOS Enhanced operating...
