Boot.ini in Win2K PRO?

It's located at the root of your system drive. You can open a command prompt and type %systemroot%\boot.ini to open it up. If you can't see it, go into your folder options and uncheck the box to hide system files, etc. :)

Making my computer a server on a network

Actually, browsing has nothing to do with DNS at all. It's purely a broadcast/WINS implimentation. Assuming the WINS servers are configured correctly, you can browse anywhere you like (it's just slow as hell in a large multi-domain environment).

You mean the volume label? That thing you can set by right-clicking a drive and going to properties? Absolutely not. That's in no way guaranteed to be any more unique than a computer name... users can set that to whatever they want. It's not used in any form of local or network IO...

I understand. Just pointing out that it's possible to get into that scenario without there being some type of corruption, etc. A program running as the local admin could simply create a custom group, add all your user accounts to that group, and remove them from those three above...

Just FYI: If a user account is not a member of the admin group, power users group, or users group it will not display on the Welcome Screen. Also, if you log in with safe mode, you should see any account with admin rights on the welcome screen, but you won't see any account without admin...

Sorry, I'm too tired right now to look up the model numbers of the hardware you listed. When you do your test (wireless/wired) are you using the same router, or are you using one of those routers as pure wireless, and the other for wired, and testing that way.
