Hard to believe you got "whopped" with producing nearly 14K WU :) Just a new member with some units joining us.
How about dropping #8 from the list and including #3? HWFr doesn't seem to be a thread to either of our teams anymore. (Nor does HP, but we need a foundation to stand on, right?)
I'm glad to see this kind of production. I've got a 3.2Ghz Prescott Dell coming my way in the near future. Probably won't be quite as fast since Dell runs conservative, but I'll take those kinds of numbers any day.
That seems a little bit on the slow side. My XP1800+ with 512MB of PC2100 runs 3:08 to 4:00 per WU. Rarely am I near the 4 hour mark unless it's a VLAR. No overclocking at all.
I'm fairly certain MS dropped ALPHA support with windows 2000. There should be an Alpha install on Windows NT 4.0, though. But I think you need an Enterprise edition or Server edition to get use of all 4 CPUs.
You're going to see us drop several dozen users in the coming days. Members who have been around for a long time and have a "zero" wu count will be removed from the team. Any member with 1 or more WU will never be removed from the team, unless in an extreme circumstance.
Also make sure that you don't run any CPU intensive screensavers. The best ones to run are blank screen or login box. Anything else will eat up CPU cycles and reduce your output.
I'd also recommend running SETI as a service. That way, you can log out of the system without affecting your...
I thought they had announced this to be the case, but I'm not 100% certain. We can only hope they decide to do that with some added pressure from us :)
I agree. I hate the fact that people "bring WU" with them when joining a team. Both of our teams have benefitted and been pounded by it at times. It will be a refreshing change when this doesn't happen with BOINC.
Interesting article, thanks for posting that. I guess we'll find out for certain with hard numbers in a couple of weeks. I'm still leaning toward the Prescott though, especially if the prices are the same and I get 1MB of cache instead of 512K.
I'd expect the boosted onchip cache from 512 to 1MB will make a huge difference. I've been waiting for the release of this chip and alignment to Northwood prices (expected around the 15th of February) to get a new system. The one I have now is OK, but is coming up on 5 years old and 7 1/2 hour...
1. A merge will NEVER happen. Just like you'll never see the Yankee's and the Redsox merge together. As many of you have said, it isn't about being #1. It's about the competition and having fun.
2. I am one of those members in your team with about 21 WU. This was done because a lot of...
Whenever someone has asked the question, someone typically drops this reply. Berkeley has been quiet on when the current phase will end. That's all we know :(
Good day for us at BBR but bad day for you guys. I hate seeing members leave, especially when it impact production as much as it did for you yesterday.
Happy 2004 from all of us at BBR! I hope you all didn't party too hard and kick out the plugs to your crunchers :) I also hope you didn't drink too much and wake up clear headed in the later morning. I'd hate to see you all deal with a hang over :)
I hadn't posted here in a while but I've been visiting on a regular basis. Just wanted to say congratulations on your added firepower in SETI and ask you to soften up HP for us (BBR) when you clobber them.
On top of that, I hope you all have a great Holiday, whichever one you celebrate.
I was reading through the comments. It's good to see you all have to deal with thread crappers, too.
I gotta hand it to TA, you guys have really turned it up a notch.
I had it running on my XP1800+ at home with 512 PC2100. Virtually no difference between 2003 and 2000 server. There might be a fraction of an improvement considering a lot of services are shut off on 2003 by default. But no ground-breaking improvements. Spend the money that you would pay...
Tailgaiting will do that to you. This is why I hate people on my back bumper. If I slam on my brakes, and someone plows into me, it's their fault...they were following too closely.
As for avoiding critters, I have slammed on my brakes before to miss them, but I will not steer out of my lane...
My Dell Katmai 500Mhz CPU only had a heatsink with no fan. When I upgraded the processor to a 1ghz SLOT CPU, it was an Intel Boxed version with heatsink and fan.
So, it's not unusual for Dell to have put out these CPUs without fans. Not sure what the difference would be temperaturewise...
**CANCEL THE DRIVE FOR MORE WU**
BBR is no longer a threat to passing Team Anandtech. You may now turn off your old PII 266's and K2-450's now. You might even want to help out some of the other non-SETI Distributed Computing Teams here at Anandtech.
