Long Range Wireless Mouse: RF or Infra Red?

RF is the way to go. Check out the Intel Wireless series. You can get a pretty good deal on them if you shop around. The only problem is that the mouse drains batteries pretty quickly. DaveK

Looks pretty good. The only thing I might suggest would be to get a cheaper network card. The 3coms are nice, but to be honest, a Linksys or a Netgear card will work just as well for less than half the price of the 3Com. DaveK

Make sure that you have controller setting set up correctly in the BIOS. Check to see if it says UDMA-5 or "auto". DaveK

I need help selecting a new case

Hmm...they all look pretty expensive there at that web site. If you want a cheap and sturdy case, check out the Enlight 7237 at newegg. I believe it should only come to $55 or so after shipping, and should be substantially lighter than your full tower. DaveK

Games appear "dark" on GeForce DDR

Sounds like your overlay Gamma or brightness is set too low. That would explain why normal desktop, programs, etc. look okay. Check some of the control panels, etc. to find the overlay settings. Is it dark on other things that use overlay like DVD, Media files, etc.? DaveK

Networking Question

Yup..."2 end stations --> hub --> switch port" will work just fine. Remember though, that you will not be able to use Full Duplex because of this hub. Also, the 2 end stations will have to share the 100Mb connection. DaveK

What's the best way to copy CD's, with Nero?

Nero's a good option, since you already have it. I can't say enough good things about Padus Disc Juggler, though. Excellent piece of software. DaveK

advantages of DUAL CPU mobo

tkim, Check out my rigs in the sig. Dual Celeron 400, running Linux most of the time, and XP the other percentage. Abit BP6, 512MB of memory, 20GB HD....works great for just about everything I would like to do. (Not so great for gaming :() DaveK

Question about RAID

Well, the speed increase is not anywhere near double the performance. I believe it works out to be about 30%-40% better performance over 1 drive, with RAID 0. If you are just looking for speed, RAID 0 will definitely do the trick. It's not the most reliable thing in the world, and you'll...

advantages of DUAL CPU mobo

Well, I agree with what is said above...but... I do a lot of multitasking, and a dual CPU helps out tremendously. If I'm ripping mp3s, divx, or whatever, I can do anything else at the same time, without even noticing that something else is going on. Heck, I'm still running on a Dual Celeron...

slight crackling on z560s

Sounds like it could be a cable problem. Have you tried using a different cable from the pc to the speakers? Also, there might be an issue with the sound card itself...which model are you using? DaveK

Floppy drive question

Don't buy one of those "floppy" drives that hold more than the standard 1.44MB. First of all, you can get cheaper storage elsewhere, and also sometimes, regular floppys won't boot correctly off of that drive. DaveK (Speaking from experience)

Yup...sounds like you were doing a quick format on the original. Even on the fastest controllers, you won't be able to do a normal format on 80gig that quick. DaveK

Does Gamecube outputs 1080i (HDTV) ?

No DVD player that I know of will output 1080i, even if it does, it would be scaled, as normal DVDs don't have nearly that many lines. Anyway...Xbox games - 1080i if the game supports it Gamecube - 480p DaveK

new system build up

You'll get a vote here for the Shuttle board...very easy installation and very stable. (Plus you save $20 or so over the Epox) I would suggest getting a 7200RPM drive for your main disk. It will help boot time, and provide faster access all around. DaveK

want a sound card from hercules

For the F2, the optical output will not work at the same time as the regular analog outputs. If running win98, you'll need to switch 1 setting in their control panel thingie. If running win2k or winxp, you have to change that same setting, and then reboot. It's a big PITA, but a decent...

My wife and I just bought a Powerbook G4, and we absolutely love it. Awesome screen (15.2" widescreen), light, and powerful. OS X has the unix geeky stuff for me, and the simplicity and app support for her. She does video editing, and the mac is perfect for that. In fact, most serious media...

300 dollars to blast..hmmm ..what to buy??

If you are a tinkerer, you might want to pick up a Dreamcast and a bunch of accessories. Games are real cheap...you can run emulators for all the old systems (SNES, NES, Genesis, etc.), it can run linux ;), plus you'll have lots of $$ left over for DVDs! DaveK

Buy or build? Which is actually cheaper for a customer?

I personally buy all of my OEM software from Directron. Good prices, good service. Even with cheap software, if you don't have multiple people doing support for you, it'll probably be better to buy them a Dell or whatever. DaveK
