How to change runtimes under RH 7.2????

You'll need to edit a file in /etc called inittab. Look for a line that says something like id:5:initdefault: and change the 5 to a 3.

Linux Driver question ~ Or how the hell do you update drivers in Red Hat 7.2

The /etc/modules.conf file is standard for most, if not all distributions, including RedHat. In some older distributions (RedHat6.2 and older for example) it may be called conf.modules, but will still be in /etc.

POLL: What WM do you use?

Enlightenment for me. I've tried quite a few of them (Gnome, KDE, IceWM, WindowMaker, Blackbox) and I always end up back in Enlightenment. I just installed Fluxbox the other day to check it out, and while its very nice I just prefer the look of Enlightenment.

I need untar help

First thing I'd try is file filename.tar.gz to confirm that it is indeed a gzip'ed tar archive. I've seen that error before and I believe it was because it was either a corrupt archive or a not an archive at all. The last line of the error "tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors" I think...

You should be able to set the mime type in Mozilla for .pdf files to whatever pdf viewer you install (Xpdf has always worked fine for me). Look under Preferences/Navigator/Helper Applications to create new mime types and assign the program you want to handle them. Once set pdf files should open...

Yea another poll: What is your primary computer's primary OS?

Since its the box that does most of the work (serving files and such) and also doubles as a workstation when I want an Enlightenment desktop, I'd have to say FreeBSD 4.5.

New Linux prob: No DMA on my HD!

Add it to the bottom of /etc/rc.d/rc.local. When I ran Linux I always used hdparm -c1 -d1 -k1 /dev/hda which turns on both DMA and 32 bit I/O.

OpenGL in Linux

The mesa demos, such as gears should be a good indication of whether OpenGL is working or not. If you have the Nvidia drivers installed gears should run at hundreds of frames per second. You could also download the Quake3 demo for Linux, as that wont run properly unless GLX is installed correctly.

What is "fast user switching"?

It allows multiple accounts to be logged onto the local machine simultaneously. You can 'log off' of one account, leaving all the applications you are currnetly running open, then log in as another user. If you're the only user you definitely dont need it.

The nv driver should work fine. The onboard video is a garden variety Geforce2 MX chip. I doubt there are any optimized drivers for the north/south bridge motherboard chips or drivers for the onboard sound, but the default motherboard drivers should do fine, and you can always toss in a PCI...

Did you rerun Lilo after you compiled the new kernel? Sounds more like a Lilo/kernel problem than it does a problem with converting the partitions to ext3.

Having trouble formattig a NTFS drive...

I think he wants to get rid of NTFS partitions and reformat as FAT32 ... in which case you will need to fdisk and delete the NTFS (non-DOS) partitions, then create new partitions (also with fdisk). Then you can format the new partitions as FAT32 using the DOS format.com utility.

nvidia Linux driver question.

Nvidia's driver/kernel module for Linux is on par performance wise with their Windows drivers in both 2D and 3D. So, yes, they are definitely worth the couple minutes it takes to install them.

Linux newsreader Pan 0.11.1.90 is out and it is a very goooooooooood newsreader.

Pan has been pretty good for quite a while now. I've been using it since Mandrake 7.1 which was one of the first distributions I tried. Even back then it was quite stable and easy to use.
