Can i Use this driver for 2.4.20-8?

Looks like you could use it, but depending on what is in the tarball, you may need to have the kernel source installed, which you should be able to find a rpm or another package on the install cds for the distro.

Shuttle AK31 problem loading OS

i had a problem with an ak31, and i tried the via latency patches http://www.georgebreese.com/net/software/, but nothing seemed to help, but what i ended up doing (after finding out that disabling dma made the problem go away) was to force it into udma33 mode rather than the fastest. not sure...

no, you should be fine. one problem that i may see is that if you use a more obscure filesystem like xfs, and after you format, you don't have that module compiled or built into the kernel. as long as you stick with ext2/3, you'll be fine. you don't even need to use two hard drives, just make...

i was also confused, but i deduced from: 24.220.200.0 * 255.255.254.0 U 0 0 0 eth1 and Primary dns 24.220.0.10 Secondary dns: 24.220.0.11 that eth1 was the external interface

nonono, the way that your current setup has eth1 as dhcp(since it has the 24.x.x.x ip), and eth0 is the static ip

Startx and permissions

Your search may not have turned out futile because a stock install of mandrake allows nonroot users to run startx. what happens when you run it? permission denied, or does it start up, flicker, and come right back to the console?

what is the 24.220.200.0 subnet? i'm guessing that this is the ip assigned from the cable modem, since it in an internet routable address.... but you say its a "direct connection" between linux and your computer, which is unclear. is this a hub or a crossover cable? i don't understand how, if...

RedHat 8.0 kernel updating problem..

Personally, I think the 2.4.18-14 kernel is better, seems like -17 and above do some funky things with the timeslices, and seems slower overall.

correct. try 'ifdown eth0' and then 'ifup eth0' and that should have some sort of dhcp message, if it hangs there, then there's some problem with the modem assigning a ip to the nic that it is hooked up to. if it goes quickly, check ifconfig to see if there is an ip address. check out...

pinging 127.0.0.1 won't really help you, it would ping yourself on the loopback device, not the ethernet device. if you do a ifconfig -a, you should see if your eth0/1/2... and check to see if your device is there, with an ip address. also check lsmod to see if the 8139too module is loaded...

I've seen it go both ways as far as frame rates, but the difference is usually nominal. What you gain from stability in xp/2k is definitely worth it.

Is there a way to stop access to certain sites in IE? (on a domain).

a quick and easy way is to put these (among others) in your hosts file (in %systemroot%/system/drivers/etc/hosts): that way, the name resolves to your own local loopback device. 127.0.0.1 www.gator.co.uk 127.0.0.1 www.gator.com 127.0.0.1 www.gator.ne

They(as in the set of default ones) are red, there's a dropshadow, they are partially translucent, and there seem to be more variations for actions (on the edge of a window, on the corner, the hourglass type thing, etc)

i seem to remember a faulty TSC on an old via proc. it said it was there, but it didn't function properly, so if you used the TSC to timing values, it would be way off..

Exchanging huge files - easiest way?

i think that par files would be good, you'd get integrity checking, and plus if part of the transfer is corrupted, or missing, you can generate it from what you have.. a vpn would be nice, but not sure worth the time... there are many file sharing IM programs out there, not sure what supports...

kde or gnome?

i haven't used kde extensively in a long time, because it never allowed me to set up the hotkeys that i wanted, and i hotkey just about every app that i run on a daily basis. both gnome and kde seem very bloated these days, but i think gnome is simpler and minimalist, which i always like.

Is XP for me?

am i the only one who's disappointed in xp? it doesn't seem any more/less stable than 2k. yeah, there's more eye candy, but after 2 days, you turn off all of that fade/animation stuff cos the novelty has worn off, and the delays get annoying... it boots faster than 2k, but since i reboot...

New CPU Fan suggestions???

for low noise, i dont think that the slk-800/panflo combination can be beat. a little on the pricey side, and depending on your processor/overclocking, a gc68 may work just fine, i have a couple of those, and they are pretty quiet.
