    Firewall in SuSE linux 8.2

I got the firewall configured and running in SuSE 8.2, without a problem, using YAST. Now the next part may sound stupid, but I really liked when zone alarm lets me know on my windows box that it has blocked or logged a network intrusion or other event. Does anyone know if SuSE can do that...

Why dont Intel,IBM or AMD start making GPUS?

Actually, IBM does make GPU's. We are producing the GeForce FX GPU line under contract for Nvidia. Starting in April of 2003, Nvidia began splitting the production of its GPU's between IBM and TMSC. Nvidia actually does not manufacture any of their own GPU's. They simply design them and...

    Please provide upgrade advice.

I use the system for gaming. I really can't pry any more money out of my wallet right now, with a new baby on the way. My question is really where is it best to spend my money. The alternative I was thinking of was to maybe get an ECS K7S5A, AMD athlon xp 1600+, and a cheaper video card (like...

    Mandrake vs Red Hat vs....?

IMHO I have tried Red Hat 8, Mandrake 9 and Suse 8.1...I like Suse the best. Most polished, best system config tools, many things pre-installed (i.e., linmodem drivers for HSF and mwave modems) and ALSA sound. Costs some money for the full versions, but worth it.

Which linux install works best on laptops?

I would also have to say Suse, but I vote for 8.1, with all of the updated software, etc. I have it running on my thinkpad 600. I think the ALSA sound system as implemented in Suse does a better job of configuring the think pad sound systems. And as an added bonus, Suse comes with the Mwave...

    Linux Distros for n00bs?

My vote would be as follows: If you want to learn linux, and are looing for something to start off with, get Suse 8.1. I am running it on my desktop and my laptop. I like it better than Mandrake 9 and Red Hat 8 (the newest versions of each). I think the YAST2 tool is very slick. I also...

Any Red Hat 8/Mwave modem experts?

I just installed Suse 8.1, Mandrake 9.0 and Redhat 8.0 on my thinkpad 600. Suse comes with the Mwave driver included as an RPM that I can select when installing, it works perfectly. For Mandrake, I used the open source Mwave driver from IBM (version 1.0.2) and it works perfectly. But for...

How high are you getting the AGOIA 1600XPs?

That's true, unleass you get a 2.5Ghz processor for around $150 bucks. I like the idea of overclocking the Athlon, but I would feel more comfortable about it if there were motherboards around for the Athlon that offered the PCI/AGP frequency lock. From all the reviews I read, it seems to only...

How high are you getting the AGOIA 1600XPs?

What is the best motherboard for overclocking one of these processors? Is there a board out there for Athlons with a PCI/AGP frequency lock option, similar to what the Gigabyte 8SG667, or some of the other SiS 648 P4 boards have? I am torn between getting one of these with an Epox EP-8K5A2+...

    Gnome 2.0 released

I much prefer Gnome over KDE. On my 733Mhz PIII box, with 256mb of memory, it is much faster. But the reason I use Gnome, is that I just plain like the way it looks and they way the panel behave. IMHO Gnome is better than KDE in these two areas. That being said, I am going to wait for a...

Building an AMD XP Computer, any suggestions?

Here's what I would change, according to my personal preferences: Soyo Dragon Platinum I would go with a EPOX 8K3A+ to get the high point raid controller. 512Mb 2100 RAM Since the Epox board is a KT333 chipset board, I would go with PC2700 memory. I like the OCZ DDR RAM PC-2700 333Hz CAS...

Looking for impressions on KDE and GNOME

I agree with the advice of try them both, but would add, try them all. I favor Gnome, because it seemed simpler to set up to me, and I really don't like the look of KDE, no matter what I do to it. That being said, neither fits my needs perfectly. My biggest complaint would be the file...

The great AT Linux/BSD/*NIX FAQ project!

I don't know if you all will get into this, but my biggest problems with Linux are when things don't work according to the instructions, specifically when compiling software from sources. Notable past examples (which may be fixed by now) have been trying to put ALSA or Evolution on a Red Hat...

    Editing menus in Suse

I use suse 8, and there are Suse specific menue that appear in KDE or Gnome. However, if I use the menu editor in either of those environments they only seem to work for their specific menus (i.e., the gnome menue editor lets me edit the default gnome menus but not the suse menu, smae thing...

OK, I need some advice. I want to run Linux exclusively. To do that, I need to run a few apps which are still only available on MS. I am currently dual booting but want to get off of that. My basic needs for MS products are limited to Office 2000, quickbooks, turbotax, and the odd game or...

    anyone have an rs/6000?

it depends on the model. Actually the PPC based units are very much like PC hardware. same drives, same memory chips, etc, depending on how old it is. I was in the Rochester Minn. plant where we make these units about 4 years ago, and I was amazed at how similar the work station units looked...

What do you think would be THE "threshold development" capable to convert 80% of Windows users to LINUX?

Well Lotus has been a wholey owned subsidiary of IBM since 1996. The lotus software division is still churning out products up in Cambridge, MA, although it is a mostly blue suit opperation now. A lot of original Lotus people headed for the doors when the company was bought. I like the lotus...

Reboot and Shut Down Linux(Red Hat 7.2)

Mike, Not to be rude or mean, but Red Hat is probably one of the best documented Linux distros that also gives you their documentation free for downloading. Go to www.redhat.com, and download all of the 7.1 guides and manuals. This stuff is all covered there.

What do you think would be THE "threshold development" capable to convert 80% of Windows users to LINUX?

DaHitman, I respectfully disagree with you. I don't have any idea what fortune 50 company you for, but in my company, the investment is significant. In fact it is very significant given that my company owns Lotus, and most everyone insists on using MS office instead of Lotus Smart Suite. In...

    Root password in Linux?

you need to remember where Linux's roots are (networking OS). The root password allows one person to control everything on the box, and subsequent user passwords allow almost any number of other "ordinary users" to use the system, but without the ability to mess things up. Normal users are...

    Red Hat or Mandrake?

It depends on whether or not you want to use Gnome or KDE. Red Hat probably has a more polished implementation of Gnome, and it's KDE isn't so bad either. Mandrake is more KDE centric. My only beef with Red Hat is that they tend to stick some files in unusual places. So, for instance, when I...

Mike, hda2 needs to be given a designated mount point. highlight it and select "edit" with the mouse. Under "mount point" select "/" to make this your root directory. I am not sure, but previous versions of Red hat used to require a small (around 16MB) partition to be designated as "/boot"...

OK, I've got Linux, now what can I do with it?

Ralph, Congrats on coming over to the dark side!! (Just kidding) Here is what I would do... 1. Stay with 7.2, and invest in a little more memory. It is soooo cheap these days 2. Red hat has a great dial up/PPP configuration tool, so you should be able to dial into any ISP that doesn't...

What do you think would be THE "threshold development" capable to convert 80% of Windows users to LINUX?

Samsonid, DaHitman, I agree withyou, I would love to see a non-MS office suite succeed. My point was that in the corporate world there has been heavy investment in training people for MS Office. Because of that investment, I think Linux has very little chance of succeeding in the corporate...

What do you think would be THE "threshold development" capable to convert 80% of Windows users to LINUX?

Actually, I think everyone missed the boat on this question. The only thing IMHO that would need to occur to get linux onto 80% of the systems out there is for the US DOJ to force microsoft to port office to linux as part of the settlement of the antitrust case. If office become available for...

Updated: Will Mac OS X.1, iPod, new iMac, and iPhoto convince you to buy a Mac?

I see no advantage (technical or otherwise) to owning a mac, and they seem to be more expensive to buy or upgrade, so why would I buy an apple product? AMD and linux make me very happy. If there was some compelling argument to buy a mac, the story might be different. Am I being ignorant here...

So I am not sure it is worth the effort of fixing it. Buy a working unit for $100, and use yours...
