Computers now are so fast for every day tasks

I have a spare QX6700 and I need to build an office machine. This is way too much for an office machine (think Quickbooks, Office, etc.). But what do I do. Buy a cheapie pentium dual core? Then I stll have the spare CPU adn would need to build a whole new system around it? /

Intel Virtual technology (VT) for dummies

Just the most basic free one. I think I used Sun's xVM Virtualbox. Nothing crazy on my end, just basic VM to tinker with while at work, while not messing up my regular OS.

Conroe-L Single Core Cpu's starting at $40 (OEM) + s&h

For budget machines this would be great. And for most games yes they are still single threaded. But I believe multi-threaded games are on the very near horizon.

Affordable Lightweight Notebook

I actually got an older Fujitsu Lifebook S6240 from geeks.com, brand new. It's older with just a pentium M 1.73GHz, but it was $750, is 13.3" screen 4lbs (less if you take out the dvd drive). I added 2gb of corsair on it's way from axiontech for $85. Why did I go with an older laptop? Well...

Slight correction here ... You do not need HDMI 1.3 to pass multi-channel PCM audio over HDMI. I believe HDMI 1.1 could do that. It's the newer lossless codecs (TrueHD and DTD-HD) that need 1.3.

I'm not 100% certain, but wasn't AMD's comment that Barc was 40% faster then the XEON in FP calcs "clock for clock?" And with Barcelona coming in at 2.3GHz, and Penryn possibly coming in at 3.2GHz, and also possibly being faster then Conroe, isn't Penryn going to be very competitive in FP calcs...

PS3 20gig available for less than $400

I don't know if they allow it but right below the link to receive $100 it says no interest on purchases over $299 until 2008. So maybe there will be no finance charges. Like I said might be a different deal or it is applied across the board.

dyd playback looks crummy on LCD

FFDShow is not going to make a crappy picture look good. Your dvd should look good out of the box with FFDShow making improvements. Work on your DVD playback first, then look at FFDShow. what is your Video card, I see you are using powerdvd (try windvd which is supposed to be superior)...

2560x1600 vs. 1920x1200

I'm the thread starter of the other one and yeah different subject but exact same title, how random. I am also interested but I know it' won't be possible for a while at 2560. I'm going midrange for now and then midrange again when 2560 is the new 1280!
