We have a PC that gives this message on just about anything you try to run. I can get the calculator and a game or two to work, but anything more than that gives this error. I've tried Safe Mode with the same results. I can't get into Manage because the MMC plug-in won't load. I can't run...

Basic Questions on DSL, Ethernet - Sight Unseen

It is possible that the jacks ARE wired for ethernet. Pins 4 and 5 (the center pair) is not used for Ethernet, and could have been wired for phone in addition to the Ethernet. The key is to look at the OTHER end of the wire and see what's going on there. Is there a punch block, a patch panel...

If you want to receive mail directly, the MX record should point to the address of your router - NOT their mail server. It is common to have secondary MX records point to the ISP's mail servers in case yours is down.

Several thoughts... Have you tried sending mail to user@ipaddress instead of user@domainname?? That would take the MX lookup out of the process. Also, have you done an MX lookup on your domain name and verified that it is the address of your router?? Is your router forwarding incoming SMTP...

Question about wiring my house in wall with cat 5 ethernet

Actually, if you look carefully at the diagram at the bottom of the PDF page, you'll see a reference to a voice/data module. Check out the spec sheet for it here. It's like a mini patch panel, and doesn't require the usual wall mounting bracket. I've also used the '66 style' ones pictured on...

Verizon DSL and two computers network. Please help.

Verizon sometimes uses Westell modems. If you have one, chances are you can upgrade the firmware to turn the modem into a router. I have done this and it does work. Visit Westell's website.

NEED: Cable Modem w/ 2 ports

If you want low end equipment, you will probably have to split out the modem and router. Linksys makes both, but not in one box. Be careful about the modem - the standards of the modem must be compatible with the standards of the head-end equipment.

You don't mention if you're using IP or not. If so, does everyone still have an address? My thinking is maybe your DHCP isn't working, etc... My first post assume the use of IP for pinging. If you're not using IP instead check your network neighborhood...

Is this bad cabling?

It makes no difference whatsoever. As I said the cables are electrically identical. Just don't mix A and B jacks or patch panels and you'll be fine. If it mattered, PCs and hubs etc. would be labelled A or B!

Assuming your switch is OK (you said you tried another one): Disconnect all but 2 PCs from the switch. Try to ping each other. If it doesn't work pick a different 2 PCs. If it still doesn't work, try that other switch again! If you can get two to work, keep plugging in one PC at a time...

There's nothing wrong with doing it that way. 568A and 568B cables are electrically identical. They just have the orange and green pairs swapped. The place you run into trouble is connecting 568A patch panels to 568B panels (or jacks) and following the color codes. This will result in a...

Embarrassing stupid question regarding 10/100 MBit hubs/switches...

Can't access some sites since @Home - Comcast switch

Something else interesting is the fact that the outside world doesn't see my IP address. After the switch, I got an address of 68.38.32.xxx. When I go to a site like www.network-tools.com it shows an address of 68.32.54.99. DSLreports also says that I have requested over my limit of tests...

Installed RJ45 wall jacks...now network runs at 10mbps only

Allied Telesyn 8-port hub $20 info ?

Munki's post was a bit of an over-simplification, and not quite correct. You can't simply take 10Mbps and divide it by 8 computers and say that each computer gets 1.25Mbps. That would only be true if all 8 computers were putting the exact same amount of traffic on the network at the same time...

It shouldn't be a magnet (test it!). It should be a ferrite core. And yes it is used to reduce EMI (ElectroMagnetic Interference).
