I've done it with Win98 SE. The machine runs fine, but I'm not sure how the stability or speed is (did it to someone else's system who couldn't afford to lose data and had no backup system -- go figure). If at all possible, do a full refresh after you have made the switch and backed up your data.
Newegg has the Kingston Hyperx 512MB PC2700 memory back in stock. It is the faster timing model as well (2-2-2-5) instead of the slower stuff listed at googlegear.
IMO memory won't go much lower so this is a hot deal in my book.
