chkdsk won't run

In the end I solved it myself by doing a System Restore - back just 9 days I then did chkdsk - read only - and there were no Errors found Just to make sure it was working ok I did chkdsk /f and it worked perfectly as it always has What happened in those 9 days to cause the problem...

Just downloaded Service Pack 1 - took 3 hours- but it was well worth it.

how many processes do u have when startup?

I have 34 Processes, haven't turned any off - doesn't seem necessary - may do more harm than good unless you know exactly what each is for As Chaotic says - most of them are doing nothing anyway - they don't seem to affect the general working of XP - smooth and fast - CPU usage and PF usage etc...

Windows Explorer view in Windows XP question.

kaervak To have it how you illustrate, I think you have to set up your XP to 'Classic' Style - then you can set your Folders in the 'old' way ie - View - As Web Page I don't know how to set the Classic Style because I prefer XP the way it is

I'm the only user So, it makes no difference as regards the Hardware then or the OS - might as well leave it at Desktop? Thought maybe all the background processes and things stopped?

If I go out of the house for maybe a couple of hours then I leave it logged off - but I also wonder about this What's the difference between leaving it at the Desktop and leaving it logged off It says 'saving settings' so I suppose that might be useful but does it make any other difference?

What does XP stand for in WinXP?

For all the Microsoft products, XP means e-XP-erience The Athlon XP is a CPU and I think AMD just called it that in order to imply an association with Windows XP

Thanks for your interet Vetguy It was in fact a Virus! - the KlexH Worm - have successfully removed it with Symantec's removal tool and Task Manager is back to normal Now I know what might cause Task Manager to disappear!
