About 4 months ago my computer started to hang. When I rebooted I would get an error saying that the keyboard could not be found (USB). Plugging a USB to PS/2 adapter into the motherboard PS/2 port or turning off the power switch on the power supply for a few seconds would get rid of the error...

Anyone make a portable DVD player for MP3s?

I would love to be able to load 4 GB of MP3s on a DVD and carry around a small CD-like player. Seems like it would be a cheap alternative to hard-drive based players. Anyone know of such a device? I can find lots of portable DVD video players, but not one dedicated to MP3s. And yes I did do a...

Help me pick my MP3 player

You did not mention the creative muvo TX FM. It does not need a USB cable either. My wife has the 256MB version and loves it. Fry's currently has the 512MB version for $80 AR.

Quietest PATA HDD

Everybody is going with Seagate for reliability. I don't know about noise though. Depending on your application, you may want to consider a 5400 RPM drive to reduce noise. I believe that a 5400 RPM drive can keep up with a firewire connection. Anyone know for sure?

What's a neat, underrated Programming Language?

Run, run fast , run long. It may be interesting because it was one of the first attempts at an object-oriented language. Many times I wished the private and public sections of a C++ class could be defined in separate .h files like ADA allows. How about COBOL. Still in use today.

Using access point without a router

Has anyone ever tried this? I had an old AP (DLink DWL-900AP+) that I gave to my neighbor. I was able to get it to work, but in order to configure the AP I had to disconnect the DSL modem then change the laptop to be in the 192.168.0.* subnet. Once the AP was configured I changed the laptop back...

Bizarre semi-reformatted HD

I don't quite understand what happened, but if the drive was originally on a windows XP machine it may have been formatted as NTFS. Win98 will not be able to read NTFS. My suggestion is to use the win98 fdisk program to delete all logical drives and partitions, then create one large primary...

No drivers

You don't need a driver for a graphics card to work, especially in office apps. The generic VGA driver works just fine. Are you sure they were installed?

Delayed write failed: Bad hard drive or bad controller card?

Get the WD hard drive diagnostic tool. See what it reports. I had the same issue with a Maxtor, the diag program said everything was fine, but it would not format. I did a quick low-level format and has worked ever since.

WinXP reports USB flash drive isn't formated, but won't format. Is it bad?

Flash drives work well, but are not perfect. We had one at work that would show a different set of files on two different computers. You could even format it on computer 1 and still see the files on computer 2. We would up tossing that one in the trash.

Google picasa, whats the catch?

I have been using Picasa since it came free with my Canon S45. I was happy to see Yahoo buy it, since all updates are now free. Great product, no catches. Heck even my 12 year old can use it. Picasa 2 was a good upgrade from 1. I look forward to more improvements.

Never tried whale, but you can get it in Japan. I have eaten Sea turtle in the Cayman Islands. It tastes like beef, not steak, but more like the meat you put in a stew.

Try reseating everything. Also try without the HD. Does the motherboard support beep-codes, or are the LED's there to indicate the error? Either way lookup the LED code/beep code in the manual. You may also try running it outside the case in order to eliminate grounding issues. are the fans...

More f'n wireless internet problems!!!

Be sure to check for other networks in your area. Then choose a channel that is not being used. Be careful because the channels overlap. HOw far away from the router are the computers? How many walls are in the way? At what angle? All of these things can affect the wireless signal. That said...

What wired router should I get?

I have an old D-link 704 wired router that has worked flawlessly for 2.5 years. I have had to reboot it once. They still make them in a P and UP versions. The D-link store has them for $60. I'm sure you could find them cheaper elsewhere.
