How to setup metrics in Redhat Linux 7.2?

What do you mean by metrics. Are you talking about RIP hops, OSPF costs, IPX ticks or none of these?

Need Help with an Cisco Access List..

Garion - Why do you despise them? Apart from arcane sytax (which I hate as well) I've found them to be one of the things that cisco got very right in IOS, they're useful for everything, so much so that other router vendors haven't bettered it.

    DNS and Ip's

An ISP has to have at least 2 in 2 different locations (or at least on 2 different subnets) to get an address allocation approved, at least that's how we do it in Europe.

Network gurus - What job search engine do you use?

If this is USA only I can be no help. In the UK I'd go with Jobserve. There's a lot of good talent on the bench right now you should get some good people.

Question on FTP Server thru NAT on a cisco router

me19562, You show a source list 101 and don't include it and specicy aan access list 112 and don't apply it. usmc666 you need the ip nat inside source static command to bind and inside to an outside address. Then just ftp to he outside address and the connection should be made. Thats a...

Question on FTP Server thru NAT on a cisco router

Just set up a static translation for the inside box. If your cable modem provide is doing DHCP then you'll have to change it regularly otherwise it will just work. (Providing you don't block it with an access list).

    Theory Question (osi model)

It's fragmentation for IP. Segmentation as in SAR is an ATM thing where you take lovely variable length packets and break them up into horrible fixed length cells, (Segmentation) which have to be put back together at the boundary of the evil ATM network (re-assembly).

    Cisco DHCP

You're only permitting gre packets to come in from e0 in access list 100. As a quick test take off the follwing statements from e0 ip access-group 100 in ip inspect Serial_In in For security disconnect E1 and watch what happens via th console port. To see exactly what is going on run debug...

can't ping anything but the gateway

What you are describing is CIDR notation. CIDR itself is more detailed and is described in rfc 1519. RFC1519 The basic idea behind CIDR was to slow down the depletion of IP address space so that we wouldn't run out of addresses or routing table capacity before IPV6 appeared. It has been so...

Aim hiigh. Go for CCIE and pick up the others along the way. It may take a couple of years but at least you'll be learning something new. Lots of the skills and knowledge you pick up will be generic rather than cisco centric which will be very useful. If possible to get employment looking after...

cisco 806 router ... clock wrong, can't fix!!

The clock rate command is used to set the clocking on serial interfaces at the DCE end of the link. Guyver01 wants to set the system clock.

can't ping anything but the gateway

Could people please try to stop using phrases such as class A, class B and class C, they haven't been relevant for a long time and they confuse people. IP networking is now classless even cisco acknowledged this by changing the default behaviour of most aspects of IOS from classful to classless.

cisco 806 router ... clock wrong, can't fix!!

It works on the 803 I have here. Does ther version of IOS on the box support NTP? If yes setup NTP and get a more accurate clcok setting. If it doesn't support NTP I'm not sure what to suggest. The clock set command you're using is still supported in 12.2 it may be that the 806 doesn't have a...

Just need a little Cisco help to find out if my config is correct

Just a quick note on the file transfers. IOS has a few QoS mechanisms available to allow you to prioritise the telnet traffic over the file transfers which as you say is not delay sensitive. Also look at using WRED for congestion avoideance and to maximise use of the links you have. Details can...

So where do you guys shop for networking gear?

Nutz, try the various catalogues. For home use I use global direct or action. For work stuff, well I work for a networking reseller so it's not an issue. For cisco memory, flash etc try crucial or Kingston. I'm in the UK as well.

    IP/TCP and DHCP probs?

Did you check your basic connectivity when you hard coded the IP addresses. Could you ping the default gateway you set? Could the workstations ping each other? Did you have DNS servers configured? Could you ping those? Apologies if this approach is too simplistic.

CISCO GEEKS! command to turn off SLARP!?

Use the boot system flash command to tell yuour box where to get its image on boot-up. SLARP=Serial Line Address Resolution Protocol People use it to set-up rourters remotely. Looking at the document one of your routers has 40Mb of ram but can't load it's image from flash. For the 40Mb box currently, check too see that...

Broadban internet access at my school, anyone know what the "Office Box" provided by ntl is?

It's an SDH mux which is taking in the 34mb trunk and giving you a 2mb tributary for your service. This 2Mb will be mapped back across the network into an ntl; access router.

    critique this rack setup

OK, are you talking about enclosed cabinets or US style telco racks that bolt to the middle of equipment? Here in Europe we have racks that vary in width from 600mm upwards. All have the 19" rails for attaching kit to. You need extra width in the cabinet to allow cables to run from the top to...

10Base5 also is not serail cable it is co-axial in the same manner as 10Base2. It also has an impedance of 50ohm as with 10Base2. Where can I download Cisco IOS for my cisco 2500 ?

IOS 12.2 is the latest, but you'll need to make sure you have enough flash to store the image on and enough RAM to run the image. IOS gets bigger with each new release on a feature set by feature set basis.

    Cisco NAT

You should make the serial interface a nat outside one, otherwise it won't know how to react to packets which come into it destied for nat addresses. You may not have traffic coming in to that interface doing that but try it to see if it helps.

reason I can't ping out of my Cisco 806?

xyyz, you need to look at CBAC or context based access control. The cisco docs on this are at http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios122/122cgcr/fsecur_c/ftrafwl/scfcbac.htm[/L] Thisn is the part of IOS that will get you stateful inspection. There is a lot of cisco...

    CCIE - security

Nutz the CCIE-WAN has died along with cisco's interest in ATM. Now you get a choise of R&S, Security and Communications and Services the latter being a service provider focussed thing. Thus the WAN, Dial and design CCIE exams have gone. Phil21, the NANOG discussion was more about the pertinence...

    CCIE - security

I haven't taken the security lab so I'm not in a position to compare. Why don't you do both. As for the moron, the networking business is full of charlatans and morons you just...

IOS questions (cisco 806 and the IOS firewall feature set)

The firewall feature set is part of IOS, it is what they call a monolithic code base. The Firewall feature set won't do anything by itself. You need to configure some context based access lists to suit your needs. It's quite a large subject to cover. I'd suggest reading the docs on the web site...

    Does Cisco have a monopoly?

Will the packets you send here go via a Juniper router? Almost certainly. They have a 35% share of the core router market but more importantly are in use at all of the Tier 1 providers. In most of the carrier networks that I know about Juniper is used in the core with Cisco ath the edge. Juniper...

I just checked this out on a live box we have here. Your config looks OK but you should be able to ping both the inside and outside addresses from the router. You don't need a static route as part of the translation.

IOS questions (cisco 806 and the IOS firewall feature set)

Basically the IOS upgrade is achieved via tftp by using the copy tftp flash command. To stop telnet access create an access list which denies everything e.g. access-list 1 deny any The under the vty lines in the config apply the access list e.g. line vty 0 4 access-class 1 in That will stop...
