What to get?

I went from a 7600GT (oc'd) to a 4850. A world of difference is an understatement. My main game is WoW and although my 7600GT can handle that well, the 4850 can handle everything max'd out at my resolution (which is 1440x900). It looks sharper, crisper, and the frame rate pegs at 60FPS...

6800NU Overclock

If that's unlocked to 16x1/6 pipes, then yes, that's a very good OC. I maxed out at 400/800 3DMark stable once the pipes were unlocked.

Recommended HSF for 939 A64 (winnie or venice)

Why bother OC'ing?

I also agree it really depends on what you're doing with your computer. If you're just surfing the web, sending e-mail, typing up letters in Word, and playing Solitaire, of course overclocking won't make any noticeable difference. Heck, I can do all that with a 233Mhz computer and it works...

Is stock cooling enough?

The stock HSF I have for my 3000+ winchester is certainly more than enough. I used AS5, but I hear the thermal grease that comes with it is plenty good itself as well. I'm currently at 2.4Ghz at a fairly high 1.55v, and I idle at around 32C and hit around 38C at max load while stress testing...

Hope your friend likes it. Mine has worked out very well for the price. I'm playing with the overclocking now, and am at a modest 8x280HTT (2.24Ghz) with the 133 memory divider. It'll do more, I just have to tear myself away from precious gaming time to figure out and test a nice stable...

This Can't Be Right...My Winnie Can't Be Running This Cool

What do you use to Stress test?

I use a short (30min or so) Prime95, and a few runs of 3DMark as an initial test to check that I'm stable. But my "stress test" is 12-18 hours of straight gaming. If it's 100% stable while I game, and temps are good, that's all I care about! :)

Overclockin my 3000+ but having a memory divider problem

Well figured it out. It's my RAM. Seems my board simply doesn't like my Corsair XMS3200. Swapped in my wife's brand new Corsair Value RAM and I'm now running Prime95 at 9x265HTT at 2.5CL and a 166 divider (making it 217Mhz on the memory). So, she gets my cool 2CL XMS with heat spreaders...

Who Cares About 3DMARK?

Same. Though I am entertained by trying to score well on the ORB vs. similar spec'd systems. And I have to admit, seeing my 3DMark scores jump drastically helped justify upgrading my 5900u.

Jump on that BFG deal - quick!!! I have the same card (through the BB/HL2 deal) and I love it. Another big advantage of the 6800nu is the potiential to unlock piples using RivaTuner. While it's not guaranteed to work, the BFG's have a great track record of being able to at least unlock...

Anyone Tested Whether Unlocking Pipes/Shaders Really Does Anything?

I went from 9000 to 9750 in 3DMark03 by going from 12x1/6 to 16x1/6. Since my 6800OC came default 12x1/6 I didn't test it with 12x1/5. Went from 3567 to 3867 in 3DMark05. So just under 10% increases in both cases. Overclocked, the best I could get at 12x1/6 was 10308 (400/900). At...

Replaced TI4600 with GT6600...............

With the power of those cards, you're simply benchmarking your CPU with 3DMark01. No wonder you didn't see an improvement. I'd say run 3DMark05, but oh yeah, your 4600 can't even run it. It requires a DX9 compliant video card. So try 3DMark03. You'll see the difference there.

NEW Style 6800 NU pipeline unlocking results.

BFG 6800OC, came stock 12x1/6 but the last 4 pipes were unlockable with 15.2. 15.3 opened them right up, and 16x1/6 is now running without visual artifacts in '03, '05, and way too many hours of WoW. With my Barton@ 2.25Ghz, 1GB RAM, here's my benches so far: 12x1/6 @ 350/700 (stock)...
