    fedex ground vs ups ground

It really depends. FedEx Ground cannot deliver in my area (Morningside Heights, New York City, NY). They are batting right now 0% for orders I placed recently, all of which were returned to sender after only 1 delivery attempt. FedEx policy is 3 attempts and then holding for 10 days, yet these...

Athlon Thunderbird -> Palomino/Tbred - Requires windows reinstall?

I have an older Athlon system utilizing a KT266A based motherboard and I recently upgraded it from a Thunderbird 1.4GHz to a Palomino based Athlon XP 1900+ (a gift). Although the system works fine, I have read online that an upgrade from a Thunderbird to a fully-enabled SSE core (Palomino...

Screwed-on copper heatspreaders - what's at the interface?

I was reading some product info on some various CPU heatsinks and noticed that some low to mid-priced solutions (e.g., Thermaltake TR2 M1) have a copper heatspreader attached via screws. So I'm wondering if there is any interface material between the copper and aluminum to facilitate heat...

CDRW BURSTS out tray with NO appparent REASON!

It could also be a power problem. I've seen some machines with the HD and floppy drive on the same power cable and the FD would go off once in a while when the HD was being accessed. Try putting it on it's own power line (no other devices hooked up to it) and see what it does.

will a PII 450mhz system work as a media center?

Hate to bring up an old thread, but... Just for the people who don't know what the Powerleap adapter does: It's basically a power regulator and slot adapter for Tuatalin core processors. I think they have another model for Coppermine processors. I believe the Slot-T adapter does not have the...

What do you guys think of this ducting mod idea?

Regarding the ducts to your CPU: So you want to have one fan in the back hooked up to a duct to bring cooler/ambient air to the CPU directly, right? That's a good idea, but my feeling is not to remove the CPU fan itself. You could try w/ and w/o the CPU fan, but my thoughts are that the air...

Ducting Mod - Simple way to keep cool

My take on why sometimes ducts and adapters do not improve temperatures is due to problems with resistance to air flow. Quite simply, if you use the TT ducting mod, you won't get significant improvement unless your fan can generate the pressure to penetrate in to the heatsink from the added...

Best Motherboard and Processor for $100 or less?

Athlon CPU's are pretty cheap and have good bang for the buck, so I would go with AMD. Also, usually most KT266A and KT133A motherboards have dual DDR and PC133 support. So you can use your old ram, but still have the option to upgrade a bit later on. A mobo that I have recently used was the...

will a PII 450mhz system work as a media center?

I think the powerleap adapter should give you the processing power you need (note: it's a Tuatalin core celeron). HOWEVER, when upgrading, you need to check on the web and also in Powerleap's database about what BIOS to use (I think for the GX series it's Dell A06 or A07 that supports all...

Oldfart etc, ASUS P3V4X (slot-1 PIII) motherboard re-use thoughts

I'll vouch for the p3v4x being a workhorse - up to now, I've still been using it (albeit with as many memory and performance tweaks the BIOS would allow me). However, I agree with the above about new parts and warranties. Having seen the evil eye of IT, warranties are really useful. Even with a...

... so if his keyboard doesn't work in windows, then how is he supposed to type OSK? :D Find the on-screen keyboard in Programs -> Accessories -> Accessibility. what about top and side vents??

Regarding the side fans, sometimes they actually will disturb the air flow through the case. You have to try it out and see what the temps are like, or do a smoke test to see the air flow. Some cases actually have a duct for the side fan (I forgot the company). I think that's a cool idea.

    Khypermedia 50-Pack CD-R - FREE AFTER REBATES

These disks are fine for their rated speed (up to 32x). In both my lite-on drives (2410b and 5224s), you will get successful burns but alot of c2 (correctable) errors (several 1000's usually). On the other hand, I've burned 48x fuji cdr's at 48x and 52x with fewer than 100 c2 errors per disk.

    Oritron DVD Player - $69.99@ Target.com clearance

I'll also chime in on this one. I had an Oritron DVD player, model 200 I think, from 800.com. Everything about the player exudes frugality, cheapness, etc.. The remote was flimsy and the buttons didn't register well, problems reading certain discs, etc.. All of it added up to giving the dvd...

    Crouching Tiger; Hidden Dragon

Actually, the "flying scenes" are the most well-done in any kung fu movie I've ever seen. It's more leaping than flying in most cases. Also, there is some wire-work DURING the actual fight scenes themselves, but most people won't notice it. The weapons combat is some of the best I've...

Can you use the power switch on the PS to turn on the computer?

If you have any old switches laying around, you can use those. I'm talking about old reset switches, turbo buttons, etc.. As long as it can bridge the two pins on the motherboard, it'll work. I did this when I swapped an old AT power supply with an on/off switch for a new ATX ps -- I just ripped...

    Are Slot fans any good?

I'm not surprised at the change in the free shipping policy at Onvia -- they laid off roughly 50% of their workforce at the end of December 2000. Obviously they needed to cut costs and charging for shipping was one of the more viable ways.

    HighQuality Crucial PC133 64MB PC133 $31.00 shipped

Well since most Windows applications often do not return the resources they use after they are shut down, more than 128 megs is always helpful. On my p3-866 w/ 128 megs under Win98SE, I would often run out of physical memory after running only a few apps. Now with 256 megs and WinME, it's...

CPU fan wont work?! Asus P2B

Maybe you are connecting the plug incorrectly? Yes, you can get a 3-pin to 4-pin molex adapter. The cheapest solution would be to fish your manual out and see if there are jumpers or switches to enable or disable the fan headers. Also, you may just have to look through each of your BIOS menus...

    Free Knife

I replied to the post awhile ago and to sum it up, this knife is a piece of crap. The knife is not that sharp, is chisel ground, uses cheap 420J2 steel which dulls quickly, and has serrations that make it difficult to sharpen unless you are knife-knowledgable. I picked up a similar model for 99...

Hey, whats too high on temp. for a p3?

It also depends on what you do. My 650 oc/ed to 866 heats up to about 60C when I do processor intensive stuff, but usually stays in the 40C range. If you can run like 3dMark and log your temperatures, it'll give you a better idea of what the average temperature of your cpu will be.

    5.25 Drive Bay Vents

You would just have to open the exhaust fan casing, then detach the fan from it's axle and flip the fan over to reverse the air flow. Some are easier than others (e.g., slot fans) to do this.

    Air Pockets??

I think what he means by "air pockets" is turbulent air flow, which creates little vortices or "pockets" where air is not flowing smoothly. You don't really have to worry about, just try to keep the case neat and the flow of air in one direction (e.g., don't put fans in the...

    negative pressure in case

If you have fans blowing in only, what you'll have is air exiting your case through any crevice, vent, etc.. If you have fans blowing out only, you'll be sucking air through the vents, slits, etc.. The principle works both ways since there is no build up or loss of air inside your case...

Hot deal on the Nokia 8260: 39.99!!

My personal experience in the NYC area is that in general, AT&T reception is not so hot and the internal antenna of the 8260 doesn't help it out either. AT&T has nice plans, but for those living in NYC, Verizon and MCI (which resells Verizon) have the best reception overall in all the...
