So here's the deal...I have a desktop with XP Home on the HD. It also has a blank HD onto which I'd like to install MCE 2005. However, the MCE disc is a DVD and this computer's DVD drive is broken. I have a laptop with a DVD drive also on my home network.
Can I load MCE 2005 onto the...
Quick follow up for anyone still following...I bought a new athlon64 3200+ tosday after work and installed it and.......
Success!! Everything is fine again! I Guess ASUS's POST reporting system rocks! And so do you all who predicted this outcome. Thanks to everyone for your help, as...
Tried that ---- no love :(. Im thinking its the CPU. However, since MoBo's are cheaper, might it be wise to start with a new board first...easier to return MoBo's too isnt it?
I have an ASUS K8V deluxe/Athlon 64 3200 based system which crashed recently and now won't POST. The MoBo gives me an audio message "system failed CPU test" on reboot. I
cannot get into the BIOS at all, EVEN after resetting the CMOS jumper and/or removing the battery. I could always buy a...

I have the ASUS voice reporter enabled on my K8V deluxe (Athlon 64 3200+) 1 gig Ctucial RAM. The box is usually on all the time. Last week I walk into the office to find it crashed (locked up with a dark monitor) and on reboot I get the above message ("System failed CPU test!").

So I managed to get the VIA controller to recognize the drive but not the Promise controller...in fact, windows is having trouble installing the Promise controller drivers referenced above...the error message reads that the device could not be started.
With the drive on the VIA controller, it...
The only SATA drivers I have for the MoBo seem to e for RAID controllers (the promise and VIA controllers on my K8V Deluxe). Should there be a way to install drivers for the controller if I'm using it in a non-RAID configuration?
Experimenting with my new system and I'm wonderring if I can use my new Maxtor 80GB SATA drive as the only drive for the system...or if I can use it as a supplimental drive with my WD 60GB IDE drive as the boot drive. Currently Win 98 won't recognize the SATA drive, nor does the drive show up...
How can one tell the model number of the CPU? Is there a way to access that information in windows or is there a utility? I'd like to avoid pulling off the HSF if possible.
I got the new BIOS installed and the AMD drivers updated. CPU-Z shows the chip clocking at 2002.5 MHz even at dead...
Is there a Cool'n'Quiet utility that actually runs in Win XP home? or is it just automatic?
I have only found the software on AMD's website for Win 2000 and ME.
I have an Athlon 64/K8V Deluxe and have Cool'n'Quiet enabled in the MoBo's BIOS, but don't see anything indicating that its running...
I have 1 GB (2 x 256 and 1 x 512) or crucial PC 2100 registered, ECC RAM that I'm harvesting from my dead machine to use in my new system based on an ASUS K8V deluxe/Athlon 64 3200+.
Eventually I will upgrade to PC3200 RAM, but in the meantime, I'd like to get the system up and running ASAP...
Just had the exact same symptoms in my machine. RAM, HD's SOUND and VID were all fine. Turned out that the Northbridge on my MoBo was overheating due to a faulty fan. Sucky problem. i wound up deciding to build a new PC rather than risk data corruption from some random crash.
Wish i had...
Falcon NW sells that MoBo and HSF together, so I'm assuming they work together...but I just wanted to be sure. To answer your question, no, I don't have the board yet.
I'm about to build a new system. I'm looking at the ASUS K8V MoBo. can I use my maxtor IDE HD's on a board that only has SATA controllers?
Sorry if this is a stupid question...but I'm just finding my way here...

Okay...I'm a convert!! After pricing pre-builts and individual components on new egg, the choice is clear...I stand to save nearly $1200 by building it my self!! i have done it before...and now I'll do it again. thanks to all of you who participated in this most provacative thread. your...
WOW! thanks, board, for all the great discourse! Aftera 12 hour cooling off peripd, I have to say that I'm on the fence. if I get my old machine working again, I might cave and build my own again...it IS fun and valuable experience-wise.
I'm just a little worried about not knowing those...
Very good point about voiding the waranty if you do work yourself...arrggghhh...getting sucked back in...can't decide...mustn't build own machine...no...time...uhhhnnhh
Yep. i actually hate the A-Ware cases. i am glad to hear that 64's run cooler, 'case my Athlon XP avgs like 55-60 deg's cent. and the machine I'm retiring sounds like a leaf blower already.
thanks for the advice sans flame.
Fundamentally, I have no problem building a box myself. I've done it a couple of times now and I certainly am perfectly capable of doing so. The issue is more one of time well spent. this go-arround, it may be worth it to me to have someone else build it and WARANTY the work. i'm just to...
I give up! My home made gaming box has crashed for the last time. i'm fixing it and putting it out to pasture as a network/printer server. there, THAT'S a relief! now then...
As a reward for finally letting my baby go (it was the first computer I ever built all by myself) I'm treating...
Just bought this new version of the PSC 2210 and I can't install the drivers in Win XP Home. The error message I get says:

HP tech support says (of course) that its not their problem...

I have an ASUS A7V266-e with 2 extra Promise IDE controllers on it. i do not have a RAID aray, but I I do have an extra HD that I'm just trying to install for extra storage.
Loading new drivers in my existing XP install and plugging the HD into the Promise controller has proven to be...
I have 2 already (Maxtor 40 GB DIamond plus 8, and WD 30 GB Caviar) on the Primary IDE Controller.
My 2 CD R-W/DVD drives are on the secondary IDE controller.
I' d like to put my spare 6.4 GB WD Caviar drive on one of the extra IDE controllers (Promise 1 & 2) on my MoBo (ASUS A7V266-e) but I...
