ok. i'll try and give that a shot when i get the laptop back up and running. i went ahead and uninstalled SP 2 ... CPU usage went back to normal ... started installing MS updates ... SP 1 (express) ... system now hangs on boot ... agp440.sys found this ms article ...

well i've updated a bunch with the dell drivers. even did a bios update and still same issue. if i disable all 4 usb root hubs i have no issue. but i am assuming that means none of the usb ports will work .... anymore ideas? i've searched online and the dell forums and can't find anything.

its not my laptop, i'm fixing it for someone else. i'll try and figure out what new drivers dell has up. as far as usb connections goes, i think they have mouse, digital camera, printer, and i found out they have been trying to do VHS to DVD transfer. not sure if they are using usb for that.

i checked the dell site and they didn't have specific "updates", they just listed drivers i downloaded Process Explorer program from sysinternals and was playing around with it. i found the 'System' process and checked the properties. i looked at all the threads running and 1 came right to...

i'm not sure, i'll ask the laptop owner. the owner is not computer savy, so i doubt they would have installed sp2 themselves. also how would i do a clean install of xp sp2? its a dell and i don;t think they have the cd's.

i did look in the task manager / processes image name: system , user name: system i tried to shut it down and i can't. unless there is a way in XP to kill system processes

chcarnage - thax a lot. i appreciate all the info. i think a new apple store opened around here recently, so i will try and take it there. i know the battery is dead because it will not show up at all and when i press the button on the battery to check the charge i get no lights.

i run the laptop on ac adapter power, i install the Mac OS X. I use the laptop for a while. I unplug the ac adapter and then when i plug the ac adapter back in the next day and go to boot up i get the disk with the question mark on it meaning no OS is not found and then i have to reload Mac OS...

thanks. no idea why it happened. i just shut it down, unhooked all the cables and then set it back up again .... who knows ... its fixed now though.

ok. i got it working now. i did a couple things. reset BIOS to defaults and then switched some settings that i know had to change boot into safe mode and uninstall all the monitors, somehow there was more than 1 reboot prompted to install P&P monitor - did that, reboot came up in 16 bit...

Anyone used or permitted Webex?

we have used it for demo's and training. i don't really have anything technical to offer, but i know the network guys weren't too pleased about having to let us use it. i know we have used it a bunch of times with no real problems, but i am pretty sure there are some big security risks.
