  1. Is Avast good replacement for Norton 360? And which firewall?

Use a prepaid credit card if you go with Avast. They will try to charge any card in their system, as well as going back to old card numbers if you try to change the credit card number. If you try to cancel the service the online form will always create errors in the final steps, so you need to...
  2. Bicycle tires - Shelf life???

I'd bag them if they're in a basement with a furnace due to the ozone. Aside that and direct sunshine they should last 10+ years easily. I keep mine in a couple contractor trash bags.
  3. GV-N780GHZ-3GD its the same like GV-N780OC-3GD ?

Gigabyte 780ti crashing reference: overclock.net thead, geforce.com thread.
  4. GV-N780GHZ-3GD its the same like GV-N780OC-3GD ?

It was the GHZ edition 780ti cards that had the problem.
  5. Gigabyte 780GHZ - question about temperatures.

The card should hit 80C and start throttling I believe, so it should be as-designed if that is what you are seeing. The only way I've found to prevent it from hitting 80C is to put a case fan in the door, pointing at the card. I max out around 75C with that configuration. Even leaving the case...
  6. Reasonable temps for an i7 920?

Seems high compared to mine as well. With the overclock I idle at 30C and max out at 55C (The individual cores report 40C and 70C respectfully)
  7. 2006 Mazda MX5 Subwoofer

Subwoofer install thread at miata.net (installed in that location) Another
  8. Shipping a car?

I got a quote a month ago from Agape Transport to ship from New York to Nevada, it was in the $900 range.
  9. Best thing ever? Quite possibly.

Though the lines are slightly blurred I'd probably call myself an industrial designer by trade. Seeing the work exhibited by these guys is just fascinating.. every shop needs a few people of this caliber. :D
  10. Surface for working on car in dirt

I have a gravel driveway and similar problem. I have a couple pieces of 3/4" plywood that I use to spread out the point-load of the jack onto the gravel. For the jack itself the plywood is 12" wide by 3' long. For the jack stands I have two 24"x 24" pieces. I don't feel comfortable putting...
  11. No pics thread? Then tiem.

    Sulaco broke the seal..
  12. Terror plot targetting Washington foiled by feds

Like the other cases this has little to do with him and more to do with the long term goals of Homeland Security and it's contractors. Look at what this prompts in terms of legislation and/or sales of new equipment, then you'll see the real payload. Back-scatter scanners anyone?
  13. Are hard tops just better?

The NC miata's folding hard top is fairly ingenious and a lot of owners like it. It does look a bit more 'Suzuki X90' than the removable hard top though. D:
  14. cheap, LIGHTWEIGHT low-resolution monitor

I have an older version of one of these. I have it mounted to a swing arm from an old lamp sitting next to my main monitor. Some people mount small LCD's in cars (carputers?).. you may want to look at some forums catering to that niche as well.
  15. Elegant Case Under $100?

I like the Antec 300.. it's small and easy on the eyes. Some may call it more bare bones than elegant though. If you have LED fans, etc., you can just snip the diodes off. I've done that before. I also have a roll of red lithographers tape that is good for toning down bright lights on...
  16. So Brink.. success or mega failure..

For some reason Quake Wars never felt quite right to me, but Brink really gives me that RtCW feeling. I'm having a hell of time getting good fps settings with my 6970 though, so it still needs work. It's not designed for the casual fps player (you will get it in the face by an old school...
  17. AAC to MP3 software suggestion

AAC is superior to MP3, I'd try to stick with it if you can.
  18. Washing and waxing a black car

I recently switched to ONR (Optimum No Rinse). I use it on my mica green (might as well be black) car. So far it hasn't added any additional swirls to the paint. I am using a polisher before waxing and I've gone from 'making more swirls' to 'removing more swirls' during my car washes. Last...
  19. BF:BC2 CTD Very Often

Turn off MSI Afterburner before playing.
  20. Continental Extreme Contact DWS review

I have a NC and went with 205/45R17.
  21. Continental Extreme Contact DWS review

I replaced my OEM RFT's with the Continental DW (not S) on my Miata. It's a massive improvement in pretty much every way, very happy so far.
  22. Best Gamepad controller?

I rarely use a controller, but sometimes it's just better. I've found the Xbox controller to be the best. The main reason is that most multi-platform games automatically recognize and configure for it. On the older Logitech that I had I was always mapping the functions prior to playing the game.
  23. For AutoCAD: Quadro 2000 vs FX 1800

Then I wouldn't worry about it, any card will work as AutoCad renders legacy 2d in the CPU (if you use the 2d visual style you can get anti-aliasing on 2d line and that's about it).
  24. For AutoCAD: Quadro 2000 vs FX 1800

2d or 3d? We did a small test last week and found very little difference between a G92 8800GTS and a Quadro 4000 in 3d, for what it's worth. We may have been CPU bound though. The 8800GTS is one of the last Nvidia cards that didn't have crippled AutoCad drivers.
  25. engine would not turn

Something similar happened in a miata.net post recently.. He left the car sit a bit through the winter and the engine would barely crank. Turns out a bit of moisture was in the engine and rust formed on the cylinder wall. The dealership soaked the cylinder walls with penetrating oil for 2 days...
  26. It is amazing how clean cars are today.

That car would be slow with The Stig in the driver's seat.. but at least you would never see him due to the black tailpipe cloud. :D
  27. Frame skipping -> view distance?

More ideas.. - disable hyperthreading in BIOS - disable any unused features in BIOS - defrag hard drive (defrag steam game cache if it's a steam game)
  28. Frame skipping -> view distance?

    Maybe in playback devices first..
  29. Frame skipping -> view distance?

    I'd start with disabling audio.
  30. Well Mozy just got significantly less awesome...

180TB of files?!?! Do you work in video production?
  31. Well Mozy just got significantly less awesome...

I use Carbonite at home and it works well. After the files are uploaded it uses minimal system resources. You can manually add the excluded files types, which are video file types I think (I don't personally backup those kinds of things). I've been happy with it, considering the cost and the...
  32. The AT Battlefield Bad Company 2 F.A.Q.

    Wookie balls
  33. Red light camera fail

More accurately.. Red light camera win, dealer fail.
  34. Audio Rack

When I was doing av installs we used Middle Atlantic almost exclusively. Once in a while we'd use Raxxess if a consultant spec'ed it. The guys doing the cabling called them Raxx-sucks. :P
  35. How to measure V-belts

If the belt is gone you can wrap a string around the pulleys and get the total length that way.. you will want to error on the larger size though, since the string will give a smaller-than-pitch-diameter measurement. Martin and a few other manufactures have belt selection charts, so if you know...
  36. The AT Battlefield Bad Company 2 F.A.Q.

There is dolphin dive as exploit, and dolphin dive as annoyance. (same went for bunny hopping in CS if you recall those days). I think he's referring to getting shot by someone with their gun pointing up as they're diving to the ground.
  37. Are building codes a form of nanny statism and an encroachment on personal freedom?

I'm still pretty pissed off that I can't drain my septic onto my neighbors yard when it overflows.. The police showed up last time. Stupid nanny state bullshit.. Palin has it right, they need to all be shot.
  38. 6950 flashed to 6970

You've overclocked.. complained of heat.. and blamed AMD? o_O
  39. 6950 flash to 6970

The memory in the cards is different.. 5GHz for the 6950 and 6GHz for the 6970. From what I've read this is the biggest limitation on whether the BIOS mod is stable. Also a few reports of high idle temps on the unlocked cards.. For what it's worth.
