hard drives vs flash drives vs hybrid

I am going to guess that the SATA protocol is faster than the USB Protocol. As for the technologies themselves, sure, memory of all forms is probably faster than a spinning disk. Of course, lots of HD these days come with a cache on them whose access time is likely faster than the flash...

Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe SATA problem

Do you have drivers for windows 2000? Its not a standard HD controller so you probably need drivers. I think SATA came out in popular use after windows 2000. I just switched to it in windows XP and did not experience any real issues with that. same MB but a WD HD.

best wireless router for under $100

If you can get a Zyxel then you cant beat it. CompUSA usually carries them and they go for as low as $20. I have had NetGear and Linksys and SMC. And I even bought them all when looking for a new router. Nothing compares to Zyxel. The feature set is top notch. If you want simple no frills...

NICs: PCI or PCI-E?

There should not be a difference, but in actuality, if the drivers are not that great, there can be a difference. Probably you can write sloppier drivers without being noticed when there is less pci bus traffic.

netbui is not routable, but it shouldnt matter since you are on same segment. Check your windows firewall to make sure its allowing netbui. Honestly you shouldnt be sharing on netbui anymore anyway, use IP. And furthermore you shouldnt be sharing files on an open network like that, its total...

Recommendations for a good Wireless G router

The latest Linksys, D-Link, and Netgear broadbang wireless G routers all proved to be lacking in features compared to the Zyxel 334WT I end up buying. Features that I needed like mapping MAC to IP and logging and other stuff.

When will CAT5e become obsolete?

Most where? I dont know any place of business where 10mb would be acceptable today. Old companies can be hard to changeover but you can bet they want to. try pushing the monthly windows patch on 10mb. I just cant see it.

Port Scanning

scanning port 80 is something often done by an ISP to make sure you are not running a webserver. besides I wouldnt worry about port scans if you got a _hardware_ firewall.

Azureus gives good diag info. What does it claim is the problem and what does it say in its help file? When I opened my ports it worked fine for me.

You should get a Zyxel 334WT. Its a router for about $60. You can turn off NAT and turn on a special mode that allows you to map IPs granted by your ISP to your local computers. That way your cronically exploitable XP boxen will be protected by the firewall, and still have full internet...

When will CAT5e become obsolete?

CAT5 aint going anywhere. If people decide to pull it out and run cat6, it will only be for backbone runs, which are probably on fiber these days anyway. To the desktop I think CAT5 is the choiciest. 10mb is just not acceptable, too long to move those huge powerpoint presentations and picture...

Home Networking 101: 100/1000 router neccessary?

YEs but thats not a factor of bandwidth as much as latency. The older broadband routers had a propensity to disconnect with gamespy refreshes, etc. newer ones probably dont. Zyxel I have now and am happy.

Internet takes a long time to start working.

on my XP box, the network comes up, but for some reason it takes a few more seconds to browse. Other network programs work right away. I have zone alarm and thats probably slowing down things a bit. hardware is on quick, but software takes a second

Your killing that poor router, lol. Try a man sized router. I use a Zyxel 334WT its supposed to have nice power and can even handle 2 internet connecitons. Try asking in the zyxel forum on broadbandreports.com. 'Broadband' routers are notorious for rebooting when they get loaded...

Wireless Router or WAP for my new 802.11g Laptop???

you can use the WAN port on your downstream router and daisy chain them if you like so long as you turn off NAT on the downstream router and enter a proper route entery into the upstream router telling it where the downstream network is. I do this now so my wireless network is public and my LAN...

just because its a gig network does not mean it will be better for you. Trith is that lots of these 'broadband' routers have limited throughput. Just getting a gigabit version would not guarantee your throughput increase on the WAN side. Truth is that linksys can probably only pass 4-6mb on...

I suspect this is a very common Question

i dont understand your setup. Your main computer has 2 network cards, one going to modem, one going to other computer? You could have probably bought a broadband router for the price of that extra network card and you would get a quality firewall and NAT too and wouldnt have to keep that...

UPS / Need Power Supply Recommendation

Sweet. im lookin at getting a Cyberpower Office Series OP850 850VA 510W from newegg or mwave for about $110. Same features but adds boost and trim with lights for each, and explicitly claims to support Linux. Im suspecting they all support Linux though. Thanks for putting me onto Cyberpower.
