19 Power Supply Round up on Anandtech!

How much of an effect did the slower speed have? I was more asking for your opinion if you can actually hear a difference between the two. Thanks again.

19 Power Supply Round up on Anandtech!

A couple of things: 1) Can anyone find the Sparkle FSP350-60PN for sale? I can't find it (or Fortron or any other re-badged one). 2) Are there any differences at all between the Fortron (and Sparkle and I think A-Open also has a re-badged one) and the Zalman units, other than price? Also any...

Booting in DOS and sharing folders

I really doubt that you can boot from a dos disk and do file sharing. You might be able to boot from a live Linux CD which you setup to automatically mount and share out all the drives. Here's a list o links

    App to limit upload?

My answers always seem to be "well if you use linux...", but yeah: If you use linux, you can get all the graphs you'll ever want from MRTG. Here's an example of my graphs. As far as limiting upload, check out LARTC, but it might be a bit more than you want.

    CAT5 Cable Testers = Accurate???

thanks for the (as always) extremely informative reply. And don't worry, i always follow 586b for my installs, it was just one of those nagging "what if?"s that I've been wondering about for a while.

    CAT5 Cable Testers = Accurate???

ScottMac: this is a question I've wondered about before, and you seem to be the perfect person to answer it: What is the difference between 568a and 568b other than the obvious switching of colors? Is there any particular reason as to why there are these two standards when functionally (as far...

    $99USD 8-port managed switch?

I also have gotten some good deals off ebay. A few months ago I got 4 BayStack 350's (24 port full managed Nortel Switches, good stuff) for ~$100 a piece. If ya do a search now seems like someone is getting rid of a pile of them and ya might be able to snag one for less than $100. I've also...

Where to buy infrastructure equipment - cabling

Cat 5e will do Gigabit. Cat 6 will do gigabit, but over greater distances with more tolerances. I'm not too sure on specifics, but that's the general difference

Help: How to share a file in REAL TIME from RedHat to Win2k?

not quite sure what you mean by "in real time", but a standard windows share opened on the Win2k box and then Samba running on linux should work just fine.

    Realtek card problems. help!

I remember a few years ago my brother and I had the exact same issue a few years ago on a thinnet connection transfering files. I think that time it was a driver bug (with a realtek), but I've also seen it recently (on a bad cat 5 cable) with other computers. It's probably you have a bad cable...

Max number of people on server without lagg?

you should be able to host I'm guessing around 30 people or so. It entirely depends on the game though. From what I've read UT2k3 now take about 20k/sec or so for each user, while some games like CS take only 5-10k/sec. Really the best thing would just be to set it up with a reasonable number...

I'm using http://jumpdomain.com/ and from what I've read, they're pretty friendly. Actually, anything on tucow's opensrs network is pretty consumer-friendly from what I hear.

    Network Newbie here... help!

be carefull what you're doing if you're not entirelly sure. It is possible for you to fudge up the network and pretty soon you'll have some not so happy principles asking why're your some sort of evil hacker messing with the network. True it might not happen, but you're better safe than sorry.

cant setup an ftp since i used a switch

most likely you have added a router into your network. Just look at the router configuration and open/forward port 21 (ftp) to the computer with the server

    Irregular network performance

as you seem to suggest yourself, it's probably a cable problem. See if you can't run a wire between the 2 computers not going through the wall (like move the 2 computers into the same room or something) and test again.

    CHEAP ETHERNET CABLES?

Setup: Cable modem -> Router -> Computers If you want 5 computers, get a 5 port router. If you need more, you can add a switch in Cable modem -> Router -> Switch -> Computers
  20. R

    CHEAP ETHERNET CABLES?

Yup, that's what you want. Patch Cable is the name for normal cat 5 cable (with RJ-45 connectors) that are used to connect computers to routers or switches. The "boots" they're referring to are the little floppy plastic protectors over the connector that prevents you from accidently hitting...

    Linksys or 3Com Switch???

Personally: the cheapest one =) Basic 5/8 port switches have become such a comodity item now that there is almost no difference whatsoever between them, especially if you're just using it as a home switch. I personally have a 5-port Linksys (fairly old one), and it just works and I'd expect as...

Looking for DSL router with bidirectional printer server

AFAIK no network printer of any sort by any sharing method is bi-directional. At least in my experience with a few different ones I've always had to turn of bi-di support of it to work at all.

Firewall w/ multiple nics to bypass need for switch

yeah, it's feasable and you can do it, but I don't seem much of an advantage. Transfers from the servers to the firewall will be faster, but I'm pretty sure your internet upload will be the limiting factor no matter what. With the multi-NIC solution you can have theoretically 500-600mbps...

    Multiple Lan connections

Dunno about windows XP, but this can be done with linux. Linky: http://lartc.org/howto/lartc.rpdb.multiple-links.html That's a basic setup. I'm sure that if you dig into it you can use a combination of iptables marking packets and route to do exactly what you want.

DivX server and dual NIC's-network load balancing?

I also would suggest going with gigabit. It really isn't that expensive these days. You can get a *good* Intel PRO/1000 MT gigabit adapter for only $33. Also switches with 1 or 2 have come down too, such as Dells PowerConnect switches, which are only $700 for a managed 24+2 (24 10/100 and 2...

How can i run both internet connections off same machine??

yes, you want "routing for multiple uplinks/providers", which is insanely simple if you have a linux box set up. Check this out: Linux Advanced Router and Traffic Control. This will join the 2 connections into 1 fat one. You probably can also specify some stuff for running servers as to which...

    Switch recommendations

A few days late, but I have a very good suggestion: Dell. Yeah, their adds are annoying and they're not the first person you think of with networking, but they have good cheap stuff. In their PowerConnect Series they have a simple un-managed 2124 24 port 10/100 + 1 gigabit for only $300! If...
