  1. HOT - HP Proliant Microserver $180

No OS, but this seems pretty hot to me. I have setup several of these and they are great little servers, esp at this price. http://www.pcconnectionexpress.com/IPA/Shop/Product/Detail.htm?sku=13371257&SourceID=k54384&cm_mmc=GAN-_-dealnews-_-Primary-_-k54384&clickid=0004b9a5d5dce8340a2a460ba2e61ba8
  2. Climate Monitors

Does anyone here have any experience with server room climate monitors? There seem to be a lot of these gadgets out there, but not a lot of objective comparisons. We are looking to get one of these for each of our offices. We don't need anything super fancy, but it should monitor temp, humidity...
  3. Dilemma: which Mac to buy

I will second the motion that you at least look at the hackintosh option. I'll even go a step further and suggest the EFiX. You have to order it from Canada, and true it's a little pricey as well, but take that $1000 i7 machine and add a $250 EFiX and you have a $1250 Mac Pro that you can update...
  4. Nero has become teh suck

Well, there may be better tools out there, but here's what I use... ImgBrn for burning images InfraRecorder for creating data CDs and DVDs. DeamonTools Lite for mounting images. I have never had a problem with any of these and they are all free and light on resources.
  5. Could it be true? First pics of the new Mac Mini?

It does seem odd, but I remember reading somewhere that one of the biggest markets for the mini was the cheap server segment due to their energy efficiency and ease of deployment. If that were true I could see them leaving it for use as a gateway to an inexpensive firewire RAID array. Still...
  6. What do you dislike about Windows 7?

It doesn't work for me. I like the gadgets to just be visible all the time. I bought a great big LCD so I could have the deskspace to do things like that. It's not like the "show desktop" button is a radical new feature. I'm sure I would feel differently if I were a programmer and had a zillion...
  7. What do you dislike about Windows 7?

I'll jump in on this one too. I really like 7 other then this. The nice thing about the sidebar is it's always visible regardless of what else I am doing. Having a bunch of random info strewn all over my desktop is pointless because I never SEE my desktop. The sidebar was one of the few...
  8. Restaurant.com - 70% off

Most of the restaurants I looked at had a 2 party $35 minimum, which still seems pretty reasonable to me. Basically it turns a $40 check into a $15 check. I got a year membership to the "Restaurant of the Month Club" as a gift for $24. It's not a free lunch, but it's a good deal.
  9. Best SSH client?

Terminal has a great command memory anyway. It's just a couple arrow clicks to get the last server you logged into.
  10. Hot? Palit 9800gt $83.30 AR

    Link Seems decent.
  11. So, a sherriff not evicting renters from an apartment...

It must be nice to live in a world where everything is so simple and obvious. I imagine it's like perpetual kindergarten.
  12. So, a sherriff not evicting renters from an apartment...

This is the part that I just don't get. What POSSIBLE profit could it be for the banks to continue with this practice? It seems to me a simple court order that all rental income be payed directly to the lean holder until the end of the lease or some specified period deemed fair to find new...
  13. Bailout bill failing in House

Actually, that's EXACTLY what it means. That's why "tighten" and "seize" are two different words.
  14. Bailout bill failing in House

Our cultural ability to ignore history never ceases to amaze and confound me.
  15. Bailout bill failing in House

Read a book. 90% of businesses use short-term loans to meet payroll every month. If the credit markets seize (which they almost surely will now.) they won't be getting those loans. If you were lucky enough to have payroll processed already, you'll get paid. If not, be ready. Did you really think...
  16. Bailout bill failing in House

Exactly. Anyone who actually understands the American economic system and isn't just a raving "Wall Street Sucks!" lunatic should be scared sh**less right now. Once again politicians put their political survival over the good of the country and its people. I guess we shouldn't be surprised...
  17. Goin' green... any MATX case advice?

Well thank you very much, now I'm back to square one!!! ;-) I haven't built an AMD system in a while and hadn't been keeping up with the tech. That seems like a very cool idea. A 9800gt is a little higher then I was planning to go, but if it can be switched off on the fly it might not be so...
  18. Goin' green... any MATX case advice?

I have decided my current rig is a little over-powered for my needs so I am going to trim it down to a smaller and more efficient MATX design. If my math is right, I may lower my electric bill by $25-$40mo. The trouble is I can't find a MATX case that is exactly what I'm looking for. The...
  19. Which OS to install?

I'll second this suggestion. If you have never reformatted and re-installed then I can almost promise you will see a noticeable difference just from that. Don't forget to back up your data. :-) Also, I can't tell from the description you gave, but if your SCSI controller supports RAID0 and...
  20. Pystar releases OS X Rackmount Servers

I think this is probably closer to the truth. From what I have read, the legal outcome should Apple pursue this in court is not as obvious as you would think. Piracy is easy to prove, but a terms-of-use violation is a lot harder and the penalties aren't really that stiff. If the user pays for...
  21. Any experiences with the new P5Q?

Yeah, that's what made me wonder about it. $130 seems like a pretty good deal.
  22. Any experiences with the new P5Q?

I am getting a new MB soon and my needs are pretty basic. I like the low-end P5Q for its simplicity and size, but the p45 is still pretty new and I'm looking for anyone who has tried one of these boards to get general impressions. Also, the chipset heatsinks look like all flash/no function to...
  23. Gigabyte GA-EP45-DQ6

Yes, but only if it's supported by the board drivers AND the router, a rarity in home routers unless I missed something. (Which I often do...) A more probable use would be for redundancy, but since most of these dual-NICs operate from a single chip, I think it's rare that you would lose one...
  24. Suggestions for a Intel 775 bolt down cooler

It's not exactly what your looking for, but I just installed a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 and used the Thermalright bolt-thru kit from here, this was the best combo I could find at the time that used bolts. they seem to be out of favor these days. It came to about $42 but you could get the smaller S963...
  25. Simple MS Paint-like app for Leopard?

I'll second OSx86 on Seashore. There's also a new one out called Livequartz that's pretty interesting. It uses a different approach to filtering then I have seen before.
  26. Nvidia 680i chipset

I have been reading all day and I'm still not sure whether the 680i will work for me or not, but I'm hoping at least someone can give me some comparative info. I have been running an e6600 on and Intel 975xBX2 for about a year and it has been a great machine. It NEVER crashes and seems plenty...
  27. Motherboard with right-angle sata ports?

I am going to need a new motherboard soon and a really like the right-angle sata ports on the Asus P5E and other high-end Asus boards. However my budget doesn't quite stretch that high and I was wondering if anyone knows of any other boards that use that design?
  28. I played with a MacBook Air today

I don't know the actual circumstances of your test drive, but keep in mind that any brand-spankin' new mac will seem quicken then one that's actually been used for while. I played with one for a few hours last week to install some software and configure the networking and after a while it did...
  29. driving pet peeves

BIG DITTO! When the h*ll did turn signals become optional?
  30. LOST 4x05

So far I'm enjoying this season more then last. Last year got a little too "lord of the flies bloodbath" for me. It's nice to see more focus on the mystery of the island.
  31. Newb questions... I'm interested in a mac.

I can't speak to the first Q, as I line in NC, but I buy a lot of macs. Apple will ship from whoever gives them the best rate. You don't get to choose. You might want to check out MacMall, they have multiple shipping methods and there is almost always something you can get for free with MIR...
  32. So how soon will women exterminate men?

When there are no more spiders and garbage takes itself out.
  33. Being asked to be on-call when it wasn't part of your original job description

Insubordination?!? How do you figure? He has already said these orders weren't from his boss, so there's no subordinate involved. I've been in the corporate world for while myself, and the "keep your mouth shut and do what your told" crap is not the universal paradigm you make it out to be. I...
  34. what is the deal with Mike Myers?

He's also working on Austin Powers 4 which I believe is supposed to be more like "Dr. Evil - The Movie"
  35. Being asked to be on-call when it wasn't part of your original job description

...and in Junior High School (where that type of rationale belongs...) that probably works great! In the larger world, however, this is just plain stupid. Treating employees this way is a self-defeating practice. Within a few years anyone who is genuinely talented, skilled and intelligent...
  36. How do you like working for free?

I officially adopt this philosophy... hope you don't mind.
  37. Being asked to be on-call when it wasn't part of your original job description

There is a lot wrong in this situation. Presumably on-call is in SOMEBODY's job description. Why aren't they doing it? That said, the fact that pager duty went from 3 high-level techs to 1 mid-level tech and stayed that way for months is a REALLY bad mark for the management of your...
  38. Geeks.com order cancellation patterns

That's true. I guess it's the fact that the change happen AFTER I've already checked out that bugs me. If I'm assembling a system or something then I obvious NEED that piece, and now my money is tied up in CC refunds and charges and I'm not even getting what I ordered. So I have to wait...
  39. Geeks.com order cancellation patterns

OK. While admittedly, they aren't trying to upsell, I stand by the definition and I think that it fits.
