Ah ok - I assume you speak of some marketing knowledge then :). Captain, my many searches for Pentium D dual proc MBs have also yielded nothing.... I searched around for dual processor Athlon 64 X2 motherboards, and nothing came up there either.

No, but: 1. Noone wants to be responsible for sendingn your data to its death 2. noone types format c: anymore either :P When you install windows, you probably want to "repair" the existing windows installation on C:. If that doesn't work, then try deleting the C partition (NOT D)...

Free 17" LCD monitor @ newegg

The posted monitor has a .25ms response time and the worst contrast ratio. It is the worst of them all. Like SwatX said, the 1704FPV is more of a video editing monitor while the 1704FPT is for gaming (fast response time).

Trouble accessing certain internet sites

Sounds like you're dropping a lot of packets try this: Start -> Run -> "cmd" -> OK "ping google.com -t" Hit ctrl + C to cancel it after about 3 minutes. Between 90-100% of your packets should recieve a reply. I'm guessing you're losing more than that 10%.... Regardless of whether I'm...

Can't file share between two Comps running XP Pro!

I think there's an IEEE standard to authenticate as a guest when computer information is not available. Goto the properties of you network connection. goto authentication. Uncheck the guest box. Maybe play with the "authenticate as computer when..." one too.

You can check dealsonic.com for regular good prices on these. I just purchased a 3.5 in for around 26-27 bucks shipped I think. I purchased two others about 7 months ago. The 5.25 is $1 more (maybe a couple but pretty negligible).

are there no good DVD drives?

DVD-R is for movies (plays in more entertainment systems). DVD+R is for data (could put a movie format on it but probably won't play in entertainment system).

signs of a dying HD?

I've read that before (so maybe it's more valid than my personal XP), but my personal experience so far has been otherwise - I have a laptop that lost a bunch of bad sectors when I traveled with it, and it lost a bunch of sectors then. Since then, though, it's been stable. I will whooooollle...

We had an HP one - it got fried in a power surge - so, my only recommendation is surge protect it. I think Hawk (?) makes some cheap ones, but I have no idea as to the quality.

Yeah - isn't there an article on how burnin actually decreases the speed at which something runs? If so, that would be consistent with the above observation.

Can I swap out a mobo without doing a clean install of XP Pro?

I've done it succesfully with 4-5 different motherboards. It's been working in Fedora now too :) [irrelevant]!

Actually, I think we've had similar problems with dual speed (b/g) connections (although I'm far from certain that was the cause of it).

Yeah - linux is a great OS for a secondary machine (unless you want it for gaiming too). It's hard to justify paying so much money for a second copy of Windows when there's another good solution out there. If you do a lot of programming, the Linux box probably comes in more use than the Windows...

tomorrow's (fri) Fry's AMD CPU combos

I bought it in Austin this past weekend, and it was bare. 13 bucks for a fan = 88 bucks total. The KT whatever only has DDR Ram slot though, so be prepared - I had to shift around 3 motherboards to get them all in the right case :).

Coby Pro scan DVD Player 36.99

For 40 bucks, it's hard to go wrong. Thought I'd mention that I did have trouble playing DVD-R CompUSA brand though :). For the price though... I'm sure it plays normal dvds fine.
