I used Sam25's technique and compared my codecs installed on my non-functioning desktop to the ones on my laptop that could play MP3 files using DXMan.
I was apparently missing this codec: Fraunhofer MPEG Layer-3 Audio Decoder
I guess it doesn't come installed in any codec packs so I just...
I need some help playing my MP3 files.
I installed and uninstalled various codec packs to get my video editing down but in doing so, I ended up messing up my MP3 playback.
I can't play the MP3 files using Windows Media Player or MediaMonkey but I can play the files using VLC Player.
I...
What is a spike (in terms of voltage...like 5.00 jumping to what value that damages the HDD)?
Also, the best I can do is with a multimeter...I don't have an intel-factory quality tester that probably only professionals use.
THANKS
I checked the voltage value's on my friend's HDD connector power supply and they all came out in the correct range so I guess the PSU isn't the problem.
THANKS
Can anyone explain to me (or provide me with a link that does explain to me) on how to test a PSU, UPS, and electical outlet with a multimeter please?
THANKS for all the helpful responses
Yes all drives were bought NIB sealed.
Also, he already has a battery backup so I'm also thinking PSU.
What is the recommended PSU wattage (I've heard that all the fuss about these huge 500W PSUs is bs, that you don't need that much)?
THANKS
A friend of mine has had 4 HDDs break on him within a year on the same computer. The HDDs seem to have that clicking noise sometimes, and sometimes they just die on him without any warning.
When I told him to only have one hooked up at a time, the problem still occurred.
His computer case...
Well my main concern is if it will cut down the life of the laptop components (hard drive, any other internal components sensitive to heat).
I am assuming that it will be faster but I am wary to use it because of the above concern. Can anyone tell me if the laptop life will decline...
I have an MKV file (Hi-def) that I want to convert to WMV so I can stream it to my xbox 360 (I need to convert to WMV with WMAPro audio).
The problem is that the conversion takes upwards of 60 hours/movie (believe me, I have checked all settings, tried different programs...no difference - I...
None of the other HDDs are detected either, that is what I am trying to say.
He has 4 HDDs - 2 SATA and 2 PATA.
He has 2 CD-ROMs.
Out of those total 6 devices, only 1 CD-ROM is detected in BIOS so it is weird since they are all connected differently.
How do I clear BIOS?
THANKS
I tried putting the hard drive on master (currently on cable select) but it made no difference.
I examined the IDE cables and pins and they seemed to be intact but I'll take a closer look next time.
I don't think that all 4 HDDs have gone bad but I will try to check 1 of them out on...
My friend's hard drive turns off 1-2 seconds after starting his computer. I know this because I put my ear to the drive, it spins up for 1-2 seconds and then I can't hear or feel it anymore.
This is the whole story (this is my friend's computer):
He bought the wrong type of RAM and tried...
I just got a new 22" LCD monitor and started playing around with my video card's resolutions.
My video card is an ATI Radeon 9800 (non-pro).
I am able to set the resolution to 1440x900 in windows and it works fine. However, after I restart, the screen goes black and says no signal input...

Ok, I checked and it is dual channel. Can anyone confirm that 1 GB dual channel is faster than 1.5 GB not dual channel?
Also, I would like to test it out myself...what is the best benchmarking program that will help me test out the differences in the two setups?
THANKS
I just got a DELL laptop and I am debating whether to upgrade the RAM on the unit.
The laptop comes with two Hynix 512 MB PC2-5300 (667 Mhz) chips.
I bought a Crucial 1 GB PC2-5300 chip.
The problem is that there are only two slots for memory on the laptop so I would have to replace one...
What happens?? There is no way to explain why it actually gives power and then turns off as it enters into windows?
I would appreciate constructive comments rather than ones ridiculing the brand and price of the PSU.
My machine was not unstable before this. I only wanted more power because...
Ok, I just replaced the old PSU and everything is working fine so I know the problem is probably not due to improper cooling or any other component malfunction.
I am guessing the problem is either the actual PSU or me not connecting it correctly (even though I doubt the latter is possible...
Well I don't know if all fans are on...I felt the three obvious ones (PSU, CPU, video card) and all are on.
Also, I always have the side of my computer open so the heat part may be because of a bad cooling tower connection or not at all.
THANKS
Any other suggestions?
OK, I made a few changes to my configuration and I got a different outcome.
First, I went into BIOS and disabled my backup drive (not unplugging it yet though). Then, when rebooting, it asked me if I wanted to go into windows in safe mode and I hit yes. It entered into windows and I shut it...
I replaced my 250 watt PSU today with a 500 watt one (nothing wrong with the old one, I just wanted more power).
After powering on the system, it loaded into bios alright but then when I left bios to load into windows, the windows loading message came up and right before it loaded into...
I didn't use the 160 GB because it wasn't a clean install and I just wanted to format both.
However, now the 160 GB is completely bad and I basically lost all my information (besides what I backed up before). The 160 GB is making weird noises and not starting up so I know it is physically...
Well guys, the problem happened again. The same exact problem that I had described in the first post of this post occurred again.
I restarted windows and in doing so, it wouldn't load up. Even though the hard drive diagnostic gave the hard drive a clean bill of health, I'm going to assume...
I recently reformatted my computer and installed Windows XP Pro SP2 onto it.
I downloaded Sygate Personal Firewall from downloads.com and installed it. After installation, it asked to restart so I did and after my computer restarted, I tried to load the program but it wouldn't load up.
I...
I researched on the problem and found some posts on the same problem in another forum. Anyway, one guy suggested to use Acronis Disk Director Suite to solve the problem and I did and it recovered my MBR on the external drive and now it is fully functional.
THANKS
Hey guys, I stated in my original post that I plugged it into my laptop and the same result occurred.
I guess I did delete the active partition because of that reason and when I plugged it into a different USB port it still doesn't work.
Is there any way to recover the data now? Will...
