CHKDSK /F - this tells chkdsk to actually fix any errors.
If your XP install CD detects the XP installation I'd certainly recommend trying the repair as I said - its worked for me previously and leaves all your programs/preferences intact which is good.
I dont what the error message is but have you tried to repair your XP again from CD? (I know it wasnt being picked up before but have you tried since fixing the boot up)
Dont choose the repair console option but proceed as if you want to install XP. The installer will then detetct your...
Boot with your XP CD and proceed as if you want to install XP. (Dont choose the repair console)
Xp will detect your existing installation and give you the option to repair or new install.
If you choose to repair, XP will go through the install procedure and you get all the welcome to XP screens...

I have a home network of 4 PC's (peer to peer).

Hi Staz,
You can do what u want but u really need a boot loader for it to work properly and you will have to create some new partitions.
i have successfully used a free boot loader called XOSL (search in google) - a small (fits on a floppy for installing)but effective tool that also creates...
Thanks for the suggestions but I'd already tried them with no success.
But the good news is I have solved it - It was the CMOS somehow must have got screwed coz when I cleared it with the mboard jumpers and rebooted everything started without problems.
Another lesson to file away for future...
Help!!!!
I was installing a new harddrive on an older machine and after I ran through the formatting procedure with Seagates discmanager software I rebooted my machine and it now stops at boot up.
I get a single beep and it displays the processor name (a K62/450) and then stops - no memory...
How about using a network boot disk?
You can then format the drive, use the boot disk to connect to the cd of a networked machine, and tell setup to copy the install files onto your drive.
i did this with an old notebook which would not access its own plug in DVD no matter how we tried, and...

Funnily enough same thing happened to me just a few days ago.
No idea what the problem was. the last thing I'd installed was Nero (could it be related to CDR software???) but I didnt notice the problem immediately as I didnt try to access any CDROM/RW drives for some time after i installed.

Is your system using a VIA chipset ?
If so try this (taken from a counterstrike forum):
"After 2 weeks of frustration, research, trying everything under the sun that I could think of, I finally found out what the problem with XP is thru the VIA motherboard. I probably won't explain this quite...
In win9.x you could reinstall windows to correct problems and still have all your profiles etc intact afterwards.
Is this possible in XP or does reinstalling put you back to totally clean install where you must reinstall all apps etc????
Does nobody know the answer out there?
I am trying to share drives\folders\files etc in XP pro.
