    What's wrong with my rig?

In the interests of thoroughness, I thought I'd post an update. It was my motherboard. I ordered a new one, swapped everything over and it's smooth sailing. It figures - this is the biggest PITA component to replace! The new version of this mobo has 5.1 sound, so I will probably leave my...

    What's wrong with my rig?

Yeah, see original post: Memtest86 fails, but since I have 4 slots and 4 sticks, and any combination of memory fails, I'm thinking the problem may be between the memory and the motherboard (I have no idea of the engineering, but there are a number of capacitor looking thingies near the RAM...

    What's wrong with my rig?

Thanks P-Guy. I thought of the power supply, but it's a high-end enermax 550w that has never given me trouble. I unplugged one of my optical drives, but come to think of it a non-spinning optical can't draw much power! When I look at the BIOS hardware monitor, I don't see a lot of voltage...

Any recommendations for 2 RAID 0 SATA enclosure?

I have a broken rig. While I'm trying to fix that, I am most interested in the RAID 0 array I have with 2 SATA drives, that are currently unavailable due to the broken PC. Is there a reasonable cost enclosure that I could get that would allow me to connect these, maintaining the RAID 0 and...

    What's wrong with my rig?

Is the processor really a possibility? I'd be able to boot into the BIOS and also into Memtest with a hinky processor? I am not hearing anything out of the usual with respect to post beeps. I can try to stick speakers on and enable voice commands, but I have audio disabled because I have an...

    What's wrong with my rig?

I had a series of brownouts that seemed to have killed my PC (was connected to a surge protector but not a battery backup). Specs: - Asus PC4800E Mobo - Intel 3.2 - 2 GB Crucial DDR RAM - Enermax 522W power supply - last I was able to check, the CPU was running at 123 deg F - I have 2...

    Machine room rack design, cabling?

I am moving a datacenter out to one of these "hardened" sites, and have the opportunity to do everything from the ground up. I want to do things as close to perfectly as possible. I have 6 42u cages that sit over 30" raised floor. Eventually I'll grow to 10 cages. Each cage has dual-sourced...

    Build Your Own Vs. Buying

Building is more fun, you learn more, and you get just what you want and it's much more upgradeable. But for me, it's much more expensive. Granted, I've gone high-end in my 3 builds, even spending $150 on the case. There are 2 saving graces for me: (1) through work and MSDN universal...

ASUS P4C800-E and Intel P4 3.2: Which HSF?

I'll give the Zalman a try. The only thing that looks odd is that the Intel unit only has 2 screws. With my PAL I had to carefully go around, every other screw, to get the right, balanced pressure. Thanks for the advice guys!

ASUS P4C800-E and Intel P4 3.2: Which HSF?

What makes a good heat sink choice with this combo? I am unlikely to overclock and I am interested in two things: (1) as quiet as possible and (2) easy screw on HS - I do not like the clippy thing in particular.

Is it possible to hook up two printers to one computer?

Yes, of course. The only problem you'd have is if they're both parallel port interfaces, but even then you could add a card and have additional ports. But with USB (or even infrared) you could add 8 printers to your PC.

What's a good duplex laser printer?

HP 2200 has a built in duplexer that works well. My only complaint is the paper comes out somewhat curled, but fanning it in the opposite direction isn't that big a deal.

Help! CEO's wife's hard drive hosed

My CEO just dropped off his wife's laptop. She can't boot. I opened the laptop up and thought "no wonder - it looks like it was run over by a truck!" The hinge on the screen is broken, it's missing the power button and about 6 keyboard buttons. But I have this model of Dell, so I am going to...

    How often do you format?

Once a year on the Friday after Thanksgiving. It gives me something to do that doesn't involve leaving my house. And there sure are a lot of MS OS fans here. Either that or people who don't use a lot of progams. I for one find that the registry always turns into a mess over time. I miss INI...

    2 WAPs, No wired LAN?

I have a buddy who has a cable modem connected to a Linksys wireless access point. He can't get coverage everywhere in his house. I know he can connect another WAP if he had a wired LAN connecting the 2, but don't know if you can just have another WAP talking to the original WAP (god but...

NT Domain management - limit to password resets?

have a Windows domain (some day it'll go to Active Directory, but we don't have time for that now) and I also have an outsourced help desk provider. I would like the help desk to be able to reset user passwords only. My network engineer is telling me: Although a user with account operator...

    FTP Server for FreeBSD

I'd use sshd because it only uses one port (22) as opposed to secure SSL FTP. And an unsecured FTP server is something I'd never run. sshd should be part of FreeBSD, although I don't know that for sure. An additional bonus is you can use it for remote control sessions as well as file transfer.

    TV Cards - PVR?

I use an ATI 9700AIW and it's software ATI MMC. You can record "just like a Tivo" and you can download TV Guides from Gemstar for every 2 week period. I also own a Tivo, and the Tivo is 1000 times superior. The Tivo is a specially tuned Linux box, and in 2.5 years I have never had a single...

    IDE RAID VS. IDE drives.

One advantage to RAID 0 that nobody has mentioned is getting one very big logical drive. I have 2 x 120GB drives RAIDed together into one 240GB drive. Even at that, I only have 26GB free at the moment. I use so much space by: copying whole CDs to WAVs using EAC (and only when I need something...

Anybody build their own thin client terminals?

For work, I've been looking at Wyse thin client terminals and they're pretty cool. With Windows Server 2003 you can have 5 terminal connections. So I was thinking this would be excellent for home. Put in one server (and the expensive OS license is covered by my MSDN subscription) and then have...

Wireless Mouse--MX700 vs. Intellimouse Explorer Wireless Bluetooth

I have both. I personally don't like the MX700 for the sole reason that I find the clicking sound and feel to be an irritating metalic "plinking". It has a figernail on chalkboard effect on me. I am currently typing on the bluetooth. It is outrageously expensive, the mouse does go through...

    Listing services on Windows 2000?

In the recovery console, you can run listsvc to list services in a command line (and hence redirect to a text file). But only in the recovery console. Does anyone know of a regular command line command that would list services in a manner similar to listsvc?

Speed settings for SCSI and RAID Cards?

With IDE drives it's a pretty easy thing to optimize for speed: set the IDE controller to Ultra DMA. But you can't do that with SCSI or RAID cards. What you can do is go into the BIOS settings at boot. But there are a ton of choices there. I have an Adaptec 29160 and an iWill SIDE Raid 100...

    Mixing SCSI & IDE RAID

I've got this working. I have an adaptec 29160 to a 15K cheetah as my boot. Then I have an SIDE Raid PCI card (so not motherboard). I had to upgrade the BIOS on both cards. Then, as far as I can tell, the boot order is determined by which PCI card is first. As far as the BIOS is concerned, both...

    Recomendations for 21 inch monitor

I've had a Hitachi CM823F for a year and like it quite a lot. I have it in 1280x960 driven by a Radeon 9700 pro. I'll look at the link sited above, but one of the reasons I got this monitor was the exceptional quality I've had with Hitachi TVs. My first color TV was a Hitachi and it did a...

Just a word of warning. With my mother-in-law (and she died two years ago so I'm going to try to be gentle here) once you had a job it was yours for life.
