I've suspected it's due to the smaller pulleys and distance between pulleys flexing the belts. It's not bad replacing them once you've done it once or twice. On a 916 style bike it's about an hour and a half job, no exhaust removal needs to be done though.
Did he rent the fancy Ducati tool to tension the new belts? Or used the more common allen key test that I see a lot? I was able to do mine with my phone and a guitar tuner app, which was actually pretty amazing when I saw it working. Can also use a PC + microphone and some audio recorder that...
Yea, pre 1996 models have good rocker arms, but then Ducati changed who made them and the chrome plating wasn't up to spec, so it flakes off. I believe they were fixed around the time of the Testastretta engine. It's a bigger issue on the 748s because they rev higher so the rocker arms take a...
I love seeing older Ducatis, they always look classic. Here is my 01 748:
I wouldn't trade it for anything; it's been a fantastic bike. It's also a great tool for learning how to be a mechanic ;) I've had it stripped down to the pistons before for some maintenance (replacing flaking rocker...
Desmoquattros and Testretta engines are basically as easy to work on as the 2V ones, only a little more electrical stuff. Belts and valves are the same techniques though, just a couple more shims to check ;) the newer engines though need a bit more specialized tools.
8 over the past 5 days. Feeling pretty good and actually forcing myself to follow a plan instead of just winging it and doing a whole lot more than I should be doing.

I was at a half this weekend cheering on my wife and her relay team. Long shot, but was it the Gulf Coast Tri? Haha.
+3, trying to get back into running after about half a year off...

Good bike stands? I used not so good ones and the front was always a pain until I bought a good quality front stand (Pitbull) and it was night and day on the difficulty of getting the bike up and feeling like it was stable. Doing it over again I would of just bit the bullet and paid the money...
+1 on the body glide.
I also get different chafing with most compression shorts; however none of my tri shorts cause chafing. I can do a half in those with no body glide and come out fine on the chafing front. If I did that in anything else I'd be dying by mile 8.
I'm usually a fan of most types. Laphroaig is my daily drinker scotch, usually in the 10 or QC version (not partial to either and they seem to change stock around here often). I also keep a bottle of 18 and Cask Strength on hand for when I want something a bit different. I will buy any bottle of...
I try to stay fairly well stocked for friends, so the rum/vodka/gin is usually what they would like. Scotch and whisky is for me though...
I try to always keep a bottle of Bulleit Rye, Laphroaig 10/QC and a bottle of Ardbeg stocked. Also keep at least one of the 'special' bottles in stock, like...
I haven't tried either of those, but I'd go with A* just because my preference for other gear (they make the best non-900 dollar boots available imo and their gloves aren't bad either.) Also, any suit with a hump is gonna be hell to wear a backpack with, if you ever decide too; just something to...
WoW I really like in eyefinity since I can fix UI issues with it. I haven't played Dirt 3, but most racing games seem to be really well suited to eyefinity. F1 2010 is awesome across 3 screens.
FPS games I haven't had much luck with since some do stupid UI things. Crysis 2 wanted to have my HUD...
Mmm, the Erikson characters are fairly dark. The whole world is fairly dark, more than Song of Ice and Fire in my opinion. It is, however, an excellent series and I think well worth the read. I enjoyed it more than the Martin books and as a bonus, it's actually complete.
This is true. Everyone has their own choices; I wouldn't be able to stop riding unless I physically couldn't. It's just enjoyable to me and I understand that every time I swing a leg over the bike it could be the last time I ever do. For some of us crazies, it is worth it :)
As long as it is actually DOT rated, it should be fine. When you buy expensive helmets you really are only paying for a fancier paint job, better venting, lighter, etc. Not so much in the way of extra protectiveness.
Plenty of silly little incidents with dirt bikes like looping them and such, only one major street crash.
I was around the 2 1/2 year mark with probably 18k miles so I felt pretty confident. Took a switchback turn a bit too fast and highsided. I was wearing full leathers, boots, jacket, gloves...
Being in Florida is fun during the summer. I've found that mesh, textile, leather, it doesn't really matter if I have to stop moving. Once I stop, it's over.
Getting in and out of a suit is helped a lot by getting an undersuit made of whatever stretchy material they use. Added bonus is that it helps keep your leathers a little cleaner too! Suits just slide off then.
I did the exact same thing about a year ago. It took like 6 months for my thumbnail to look normal again. I didn't notice my thumb in the door until I tried to move my hand away and it was stuck; at that point I noticed that I could only see the base of my thumb.
Very dangerous, but to some it can't be helped :) I know everytime I get on my bike it could be the last time, but I can't stop doing it since I love it so much. For me, I just prepare as best as I can for the crash and do everything I can to stay safe. Stuff still happens though and then you...
Slowing down mid turn, leaned over. If I absolutely had to do it and there was nothing else I could do, I would use the rear brake to shed some speed. The fronts are quite a bit more touchy when leaned over.
Ideally, if you think you're gonna run wide, lean more. That's all there is, lean some...
Grats on the job :) I did the SMART thing also; it was a pretty good deal. Finished my 'required time' to complete my deal with the government about 6 months ago but decided it'd be best if I'd stay with them :)
Newer Ducs are a bit better reliability wise than the older superbikes, like the desmoquattro ones. You're virtually guaranteed rocker arms flaking, oil galley plug backing out, electrical system that has no overhead at all and other exciting things.
I'm about to spend a bit on my 01 748 to...
I wear a Shark RSR2. It's my second after I trashed the first in a crash. It held up well and I liked them so went ahead and got another. My next helmet will probably be an Nolan Stoner replica.
I'm a sucker for the higher-end less popular brands like Shark and Nolan.
Currently in the process of getting a few rocker arms rechromed and putting in MBP collets into my 748. Heads off the bike since the closer springs are an absolute bitch to get reset and the collets are a bit harder to install than the normal half rings. Of course also doing the valve...
You can get impressive lean angles with a Ninja 250; more-so than you'd want to do on the street. Don't worry about it, besides when you're leaned over you feel like you're a lot farther over than you really are :)
Also, the single biggest difference I've had is between wearing a backpack and not wearing a backpack. If you wear one, try to move it to a tail mount or something, it's amazing the difference it makes.
Yea, under armor shirts and shorts/long pants is the best way I've found to survive the summer. You're gonna sweat no matter what you wear and I've found I can do the under armor stuff and still wear leathers and not feel awful after I get wherever I'm going (at least here in FL).
