At first I plan on only having one x16 PCI-E video card. At most All I'll ever have is 2, and that won't be anytime soon.
But I am interested in adding an 8 port SATA controller, and most of those are either PCI-X (yuck) or PCI-E x4 or x8. I can't seem to find any AMD AM3 boards...

I've always been a big fan of both AMD and nVidia - AMD becaue they're the underdog and how on and off they actually manage to put out processors that beat goliath, nVidia...

Even nVidia's supposed AM3 chipset the 980a (reported to be a rebadged 780a) is only available on one board, and that only does DDR2.
So what's the story?
I can't find much of anything on the 980a here on AnandTech, and probably rightly so...
I'd really prefer to get teh 128MB video if it's possible to run Linux with it.
Has anyone ever gotten the ATI 9600 mobility to work in XFree86? All of the 5 exaples posted earlier were all with NVidia chips. :(

I'm trying to do research for buying a laptop. I'm very interested in getting
the highest resolution (1920x1200, or 1600x1200) LCD as possible.

Yes it's possible.
A company called UltraSpec Cables (other probably do too) sells Keyboard mouse and Video extension cables.
They're not cheap though.

The explanation I've heard meshes well with the post above.
The Infineon chips I beleive have only been found on the 512MB DDR DIMMS.
I think this is because Micron doesn't make a chip yet with the bit density needed
to be able to make a 512MB DIMM.
As for Samsung Chips on 256MB DIMMS at best...

From the pictures I've seen, it looks like the Box is powered from the PC.
There seems to be only one fat cable that runs from the computer to the box.

You don't need to do that because you aren't using the RAID array as
the drive you were installing Windows on. (IE as your Boot Disk.) Windows
only needs that driver if it needs to be able to see the Array at install time,

Yes that's the whole point of RAID. The mirroring is transparent to the OS.
The OS only see's the one drive, and the RAID stuff makes sure that whatever
the OS writes to that one 'virtual' drive gets written to both 'physical' mirrored disks.

What resolution and refressh rate is your PC trying to use?
The fact that the other monitor worked, leads me to believe that your
computer is putting out a signal that is out of spec for your monitor.
(The sound you describe also sounds like the monitor is shutting itself
