Asus opteron board with AGP slot!

which one of these chipsets? Via Nvidia AMD has no northbridge and thus no AGP. I think, AGP is all the Northbridge does now, so I wonder if they have a plan to get rid of that chip. Here are some more pics amdboards

I need some ideas please---GOING INSANE

I had also the problem, windows lost my CD and my DVD drive. I remember I tried a burning proggie like BlindWrite which installs its own drivers. After uninstalling BW my drives were gone. But a fresh install of the OS fixed it.

Inquirer benchmarks Athlon 64 1.8 GHz with 3DMark 2001

What purpose do the -5v and -12v lines serve?

I thought serial port uses +12/-12 for data signaling and parallal port uses +5/-5.

Opera 7 really is amazing!

Hehe, Opera since version 5 :) Gestures are great and "start whith last session" too. I had problems with some sides (some plugins I guess) which is why I still use IE sometimes. I should note that Opera7.0 has a security issue with enabled javascript - switch it off or dl 7.01

is it possible to be allergic to elements?

I know some people that are allergic to nickel (NI) which is often found in cheap cheap jewelry like rings and earrings. Its the first time I hear of an allergic reaction to gold? Gold does not corrode and is also widely used in medical science.

My system slows down SOOO much when copying DVDs......do I need more RAM?

Looks like a lot of I/O. I dont believe that memory could help here. Well, if you get >4GB RAM there could be an improvement but even then the whole data must be read from and written to disk. Maybe turning swapspace completely off helps because this would reduce disk accesses. Maybe this is a...

Would turning off one light bulb really save oil?

OMG! 60 watts? Ok, when I want light, when I need light, i take my 300W lamp :D On the other hand I use some power saving bulb with only 15W for every day (err, night) use. And no, I dont have a bad feeling when i leave one of this on for the whole night. Or should I?

Never did any MS drivers, but some Linux. You could dowload the sourcecode and try to understand it. There are also some guides how to write device drivers. While the interaction with the hardware is mainly the same for every OS, the way a driver communicates with the OS will be a lot different...

How long before the next big leap-- a la ISA-->PCI

Here is a linky about PCI and its future. I expect the migration to be slow since PCI64/66 is already available and provides a lot of headroom, first starting with high end professional equipment. If you plan on a new system for personal use, I dont think you need to worry about this...

Are you running an Athlon? AMDs have now a functioning heat protection on board, which turns off the power when overheating. Maybe this is what happens? Try to remove the thermometer again? well, putting something between CPU and heatsink that is not solid copper sounds like a bad idea to me...

2 simple RAID questions

1) No, you can (try) to raid any two drives. If they are not the same size you will loose diskspace (except for SW-raid, I think). If they are not identical you might not get the expected performance (even if access times are the same, every drive has its own caching and read ahead strategies)...

The LSI is a 64bit controller, so you need enough space in your case to plug it in. It will be longer than a 32 PCI slot but should fit into one. If you dont have any other PCI card installed, any slot will do. The ID for the controller usually defaults to 8 or 16, you dont have to change that...

IDE to SCSI - - Yes/No ?

SCSI _is_ fast. IDE has a high streaming rate, comparable or even higher than SCSI. SCSI has faster access rate and multitasking support. Personally, I think the drives are also more reliable (at least you get a longer warranty). You have to burn lots of money for a cheetah. Maybe its be better...

You might want to look at solid state disks like from bitmicro. But be warned, prices are around $1000 per GB. Integrating a harddrive into the mainboard is a bad idea because you dont want to throw your MB away just because of a drive failure. Also the customer demands are differently so you...

SCSI boot problems

Check your boot order in the bios. I can change between floppy, CD, ide, ide-raid and SCSI. Also try to disable all your IDE drives completely - if your PC does not boot from SCSI then, there is maybe no system installed?
