Asus opteron board with AGP slot!

which one of these chipsets? Via Nvidia AMD has no northbridge and thus no AGP. I think, AGP is all the Northbridge does now, so I wonder if they have a plan to get rid of that chip. Here are some more pics amdboards

I need some ideas please---GOING INSANE

I had also the problem, windows lost my CD and my DVD drive. I remember I tried a burning proggie like BlindWrite which installs its own drivers. After uninstalling BW my drives were gone. But a fresh install of the OS fixed it.

    Opera 7 really is amazing!

Hehe, Opera since version 5 :) Gestures are great and "start whith last session" too. I had problems with some sides (some plugins I guess) which is why I still use IE sometimes. I should note that Opera7.0 has a security issue with enabled javascript - switch it off or dl 7.01

European support for a war in Iraq overrated

European relevance is overrated. Most of the fighting forces in Irak were american back in 1991 and so it would be this year. I think only England and France have the right of a veto at the UN. Its not surprising that the majority of the people is against a war. I'm pretty sure that a poll back...

is it possible to be allergic to elements?

I know some people that are allergic to nickel (NI) which is often found in cheap cheap jewelry like rings and earrings. Its the first time I hear of an allergic reaction to gold? Gold does not corrode and is also widely used in medical science.

My system slows down SOOO much when copying DVDs......do I need more RAM?

Looks like a lot of I/O. I dont believe that memory could help here. Well, if you get >4GB RAM there could be an improvement but even then the whole data must be read from and written to disk. Maybe turning swapspace completely off helps because this would reduce disk accesses. Maybe this is a...

OMG! 60 watts? Ok, when I want light, when I need light, i take my 300W lamp :D On the other hand I use some power saving bulb with only 15W for every day (err, night) use. And no, I dont have a bad feeling when i leave one of this on for the whole night. Or should I?

    nuclear fission

There is natural fission of radioactive materials. Of course not in our daily lives. Henri Becquerel discovered radioactivity in 1896. The chemist Otto Hahn had been working a lot with radioactive materials and discribed the natural fission of Uran first in 1939. The experiment showed a loss of...

    how a device driver works

Never did any MS drivers, but some Linux. You could dowload the sourcecode and try to understand it. There are also some guides how to write device drivers. While the interaction with the hardware is mainly the same for every OS, the way a driver communicates with the OS will be a lot different...

Its explained somewhere in the text (translated): "By the way, we must call the Athlon-64-SPEC-Werte therefore estimated, since it concerns on the one hand still a prototype and we cannot guarantee on the other hand that Athlon-64 systems will really come within three months on the market, as it...

How long before the next big leap-- a la ISA-->PCI

Here is a linky about PCI and its future. I expect the migration to be slow since PCI64/66 is already available and provides a lot of headroom, first starting with high end professional equipment. If you plan on a new system for personal use, I dont think you need to worry about this...

New film, "MAX", about Adolf Hitler as a young man causing an uproar

I agree with you. I am pretty sure the film dont want to excuse Hitlers doings with his childhood, but give an example of the ideologic escalation and sensitize the audience to early symptoms. There ia saying "Those who dont care about history are doomed to repeat it".

Haven't seen the TT yet, but I really like Bilbo, every single scene :) His first meeting with gandalf, his party and by the elves. I nominate him as best LOTR actor. From what I know from the Book, he will not be in the 2nd part but I hope for a scene in the third.

    Question About SCSI HDs

80pin connectors are also called SCA (single connector ...) and are mainly for server racks that use hot plugin. Theres nothing special about it. The interface includes simply a few pins for the power connection. To get these drives running on a common 68pin scsi cable you need an adaptor - the...

    Need help quick!

"Do You Think She's Pretty?" - How Do You Respond?!

Mine kept asking me this question, too. Its simply that she wanted to know more of me, what I like and what I dont. 2 simple RAID questions

    1) No, you can (try) to raid any two drives. If they are not the same size you will loose diskspace (except for SW-raid, I think). If they are not identical you might not get the expected performance (even if access times are the same, every drive has its own caching and read ahead strategies)...

01 over and over on screen at boot???

Sounds like a broken bootsektor. I know this from installing linux. Didnt know it could happen to windows, too. It happens when the boot order of the drives is different from what it has been during installation. You should be able to boot from your installation CD, choose "repair manually" and...

    thanks woolmilk

The LSI is a 64bit controller, so you need enough space in your case to plug it in. It will be longer than a 32 PCI slot but should fit into one. If you dont have any other PCI card installed, any slot will do. The ID for the controller usually defaults to 8 or 16, you dont have to change that...

    IDE to SCSI - - Yes/No ?

SCSI _is_ fast. IDE has a high streaming rate, comparable or even higher than SCSI. SCSI has faster access rate and multitasking support. Personally, I think the drives are also more reliable (at least you get a longer warranty). You have to burn lots of money for a cheetah. Maybe its be better...

    Future hard drives

You might want to look at solid state disks like from bitmicro. But be warned, prices are around $1000 per GB. SCSI boot problems

Check your boot order in the bios. I can change between floppy, CD, ide, ide-raid and SCSI. Also try to disable all your IDE drives completely - if your PC does not boot from SCSI then, there is maybe no system installed?

    SATA Versus SCSI

No, SCSI is a parallel bus with, uh, >32 wires. A serial bus has only a few cables. Its simply that technology has advanced and its now easier to integrate a high speed interface with a single pin than synchronizing lots of data cables. You could plug up to 32 devices on one SCSI cable. Im sure...
