Well, now there is another problem ... I did my Win2K installation from a hard drive partition rather than the CD (i.e. there's no CD drive in my notebook). Could I boot into DOS (using a boot disk) then run \i386\winnt.exe OR could I make the 4 setup floppies to get into a repair installation...

Well your OS is part of the problem. The ATI RAGE Mobility's 3D performance in Win2K is about 70% of what you get in Win9x. I also recommend updating your drivers. You are probably using 40xx drivers and should update to 50xx drivers .. so head over to rage3d.com and goto the Rage Pro forum...

I have a NIC but no idea what brand....

Looking at the NIC itself is the best way to identify it. If there is an FCC ID #, you can search the database to find the manufacturer but chances are it probably isn't going to be on there.. Another thing to do is see what the #'s on the NIC's controller chip are and if a logo is present.

Is this harddisk dead?

Try here and check out the various diagnostic programs that Fujitsu offers. You might want to start with the "FJDT" (for ATA drives). I believe it creates a bootable diagnostic floppy disk.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure 16-bit pcmcia NICs cannot do 100 Mbs/Full-duplex. Err.. I wish I had known that when I first bought it.. I guess their marketing scheme got me there. If the speed/duplex is not the same on both sides of the link you will get all kinds of errors and pitiful...

...If not then it is half-duplex and that could slow you down. Incidently, the "full-duplex" LED light on the switch is on for both ports that these computers are hooked to.

Why don't you even know what is causing all of the crashes and reboots for your current configuration? You can't just blame the OS. What games are you running and which were crashing? Also, you may want to try newer or older, yet more stable video drivers. nVidia had released some "bad"...
