    Restoring Win2K MBR...

Well, now there is another problem ... I did my Win2K installation from a hard drive partition rather than the CD (i.e. there's no CD drive in my notebook). Could I boot into DOS (using a boot disk) then run \i386\winnt.exe OR could I make the 4 setup floppies to get into a repair installation...

    Windows XP/98 Dual Boot?

Short method w/ IDE drives (in theory, it should work): If the 2nd hard drive (w/ Win98) is a Primary Slave or Secondary Master/Slave, then go into the BIOS and see if you can alter the bootup order so that the Win98 drive will boot before the WinXP driver (I'm guessing is Primary Master) I...

Is booting and formatting from Win XP cd the best way to get a "clean" install?

Does Windows leave remanents of a previous install of "Win XP "on the hard drive? (maybe that's why I was having problems reinstalling) Yes, but that isn't why your having problems... Is there another way to format than selecting the option from the cd that works better? Try doing a full...

    Two problems in Win98se

Actually, since DarrylLicke is referring to << the network login/login >> , I think that the "Microsoft Network Logon" should be removed. When this happens, "Microsoft Family Logon" is restored (default) and when this happens, I suggest either: A) Entering no password or B) entering a...

HL/CS/TFC on Laptop and Windows 2000

Well your OS is part of the problem. The ATI RAGE Mobility's 3D performance in Win2K is about 70% of what you get in Win9x. I also recommend updating your drivers. You are probably using 40xx drivers and should update to 50xx drivers .. so head over to rage3d.com and goto the Rage Pro forum...

    Netgear FA311 NIC users...

I need one person to do me a small favor. If you happen to be using a Netgear FA311 NIC right now, I need you to tell me the first 6 numbers and/or letters of your NIC's MAC/Physical address. To find this in Win9x, just run winipcfg. For Win2k/XP, goto the command line prompt and type...

I have a NIC but no idea what brand....

Looking at the NIC itself is the best way to identify it. If there is an FCC ID #, you can search the database to find the manufacturer but chances are it probably isn't going to be on there.. Another thing to do is see what the #'s on the NIC's controller chip are and if a logo is present.

    FAT32 or NTFS?

<< NTFS is shown to be faster and safer. >> I'd like to see the proof. Faster is a a bit of a sweeping generalization. NTFS uses more system resources with its added features -- built-in security, disk compression, file encryption, etc. -- and so for gaming purposes, I would opt for FAT32...
