just think of an AP as an ethernet bridge; it's easy from there.

    Shopping Fiber Gigabit Ethernet

This isn't really consumer-level equipment yet [FOR THE MOST PART HEH HEH HEH] so pricewatch type vendors probably aren't blowing them out; I'd check out ubid, ebay and google for 'isp-equipment' it's a good mailing list with people selling off extra networking gear all the time.

Thoughts - Should I spend the time to learn *nix

UNIX > *. Don't think about being a UNIX-oriented consultant unless you have serious experience in the field; The business world likes Solaris, IRIX and AIX and tends to scoff at open source offerings like Linux; this is changing, but even 'enterprise' Linux is OS/390 zSeries type stuff :)

Your router documentation should have the default password documented someplace, try the vendor web site.

Client licensing for Windows 2000 Server Terminal Services?

You need to buy TSCALs for each client that's connecting; I think Microsoft will license you TWO connections for administration purposes for free with Terminal Services, after that you start shelling it out. These are NOT the same as your XP/2000 serial numbers.

Has anyone setup IPv6 over thier 802.11b hardware?

layer 1 != layer 2/3. you should have no problem setting this up, but things could get hairy if the AP itself can't have an IPv6 addr :)

Can someone offer information on setting up a DNS Server please?

if you're too lazy to read the link, go create HOST records for each NS and get the HST name in addition to the logical name and IP address first. :)

    Earthlink or RoadRunner in NYC???

And it all depends on your path to the machine you're trying to communicate with; my local Road Runner subsidiary apparently has poor knowledge of network infrastructure design as I routinely get 10-15kB/s between two RR systems in my city. -sean

gds_db (port 3050). What is it and why is an XP workstation sending UDP for it to my firewalll ?

It's a broadcast operating protocol like ARP or NETBIOS-NAME; it's looking for printers / scanners / fax machines / other UPnP-aware stuff on the network so it can learn about it and set it up for you automatically. Most people turn it off, since it's rarely used. There are long rants about how...

Buying a Wireless Access Point for my home network... security question

I can not think of a circumstance where you would want to turn wep OFF. you aren't pushing >> 11mbit through your DSL/Cable line anyways, who cares about a 5-10% performance hit?

Buying a Wireless Access Point for my home network... security question

WEP, even in a 128-bit implementation relies on a weak segment of the RC4 keyspace and hence is inherently susceptible to passive analysis and penetration; vendors like Cisco get around this with EAP extensions to the protocol, but this is a band-aid solution. Bottom line: don't trust your...

gds_db (port 3050). What is it and why is an XP workstation sending UDP for it to my firewalll ?

This is UPnP traffic - your XP machine is trying to discover other UPnP devices on the network; no need to worry, as you can see your firewall is blocking it for you so your upstream doesn't have to deal with it. Thanks for being a good internet neighbor :)

Are those $50 3Com NICs worth it at compusa?

gigabit switches are through the roof [in comparison to other 100baseT gear] ; consider migrating to 100baseT for all your systems and doing cross-over gigE between a few systems you need direct file transfer with. FWIW, 3Com and Intel make the best NICs out there :)

    Migration from Novell 3.1/4.1 & NT4 -> Win2K w/ Active Directory...

Remember that AD is a flat directory, not tiered like containers are in Novell. You're going to need a tool to migrate your directory services over smoothly; how many users are in your installation? Will the clients be 2000 as well? You should try and make a native mode switch ASAP so you can do...

LAN/Internet questions from a networking newbie.

yes, with public addresses you will eliminate your need for many to one NAT and ICS as well; however, you'll still need a router to send the traffic back to your provider :)

LAN/Internet questions from a networking newbie.

Any issues you'd probably have would result in using NAT [network address translation] and hiding several systems behind one 'real' IP address which the router is assigned. The other thing to watch out for is programs that require connecting to a socket on your machine that need a valid address...

ROUTER PROBLEM - MTU "on" conflicts with Counterstrike, MTU "off" conflicts with FTP uploading?

MTU is maximum transmission unit, or how many bytes a packet can contain before it becomes fragmented into another packet. the default for ethernet is 1580 [1500 data bytes + 80 for the header info] - this is how all your client systems should be set. i'm not sure what you mean by turning the...

Can a hub overheat and/or cause connection problems???

What would be your reaction to the Government declaring "Martial Law" on the Internet?

FWIW, BGP sessions are not encrypted, they are only authenticated via encrypted MD5 hashes, in a 'compare the hash one way' methadology. See this link for a good discussion about public Internet vulnerabilities. With all the FUD in the press about computer security, including a recent article I...

10/100 NIC streams like crap, 10mbit streams like a god...need help

Try a good NIC :) 3Com or Intel never fail. Also, are you forcing full duplex via ifconfig arguments? ifconfig eth0 media full-duplex? That's the BSD way, man 8 ifconfig YMMV.

Networking woes with Netgear's RT314's DHCP server

Start up a sniffer and troubleshoot; capture a successful DHCP session [UDP broadcasts to 255.255.255.255 from the system, getting response back, etc] and then from an unsuccessful one. What's different? post results and I'll be glad to help you deduce.

    LAN to internet?

I'd agree with you in most cases, but CVS logs can be edited, and that 'X years without a local hole in the default install' is an important title for Mr. Deraadt, I'm not suggesting OpenBSD isn't a good operating system, I happen to like it, just find it a bit on the stark side :) If you're...

allowing employees to access their computer from home

When they connect in via VPN, you basically assign them an internal IP address and it's like they are logically sitting on your internal network, so drive mappings and whatnot as well as applications like Outlook will function fine. If you don't want to shell out the bucks, I think Win2000...

What would be your reaction to the Government declaring "Martial Law" on the Internet?

well, any DDoS attack can be mitigated with filters and if necessary, null routing certain large spaces of network for a period of time 'chop off the arm to save the body' mentality. As I said in my original post, most of the routing infrastructure that holds the internet together does not use...

Connecting wireless internet to my wired lan?

Get a cheap machine from ebay or a local thrift store or something, Pentium 75 style. Then through LRP or ClosedBSD or something like that on it; set it up to forward packets, NAT, and you're done. Note you may need to tweak some port settings for complex multi-port connection protocols [games...

    Puzzling cable modem performance

The packet loss could be attributable to either the cable or the NIC; if you got a REALLY crappy NIC, That's where I'd check first. Wouldn't hurt to call the cable co and have them run a diagnostic on your circuit too.

    Swapped motherboards: No Internet Now

    Linksys Routers... secure??

WEP [40 bit or 128 bit] is not secure at all; this is due to a flaw in the size and location of the keyspace used to encrypt the traffic with the RC4 algorithm. See this research by a colleague of mine for more information. As far as default Linksys/D-Link router configurations, they are...

allowing employees to access their computer from home

How many users does this need to scale to? If you're only talking about 5 users or so, I recommend getting a Cisco PIX 506 firewall appliance; it can support 5 [at least] VPN tunnels; Cisco makes a VPN client for a variety of operating systems, and you can do DES or 3DES tunnels over IPSEC.
