Old laptop Lenovo T61 - need operating system

I would go with the latest and greatest Windows 8.1, and use Classic Shell to make it look and feel like Windows 7. It certainly wouldn't hurt to upgrade the memory, but not absolutely necessary.

Sandisk Cruiser 16GB $30 at Staples B&M this week

I have had a lot of problems with the 2.5 inch external hard drives. Most of them get their power from the USB port, and this causes multiple problems. If you get a separate power supply, no problem -- but a lot of trouble to hook up both the USB and the 110V power.

Excellent advice. If steps 1 and 2 don't get you there, then try copying your XP cd onto a new cdr (burn at low speed, no more than 16x). And if that doesn't get it, then try a new CD/DVD drive.
