TRIM Drives. Help a cheap bastard!

Look for the Intel 80GB G2 on ebay. Many people purchased them for $219 on Black Friday and are reselling them for $230-$260. Much better.

Amazon kicked in their blu-ray deals early and some gaming deals are starting

It's worth nothing that both of these two titles include -- or at least, recently included-- $10 rebate coupons for owners of the Braveheart and Gladiator DVDs. If Amazon is still shipping boxes with those rebate coupons, and you own those titles on DVD, then both will be free after mail-in...

    Radeon HD4870 512MB GDDR5 PCIe 2.0 $103 at Microcenter

    SSD and Defrag.

As indicated above, defragging does nothing for SSD performance and will use up flash write cycles (which are finite).

    Reason Intel pulled Optimizer Tool

Many bricked their Intel SSD with that firmware. I would wait for the revised firmware, expected in about two weeks. The SSD Toolkit is safe if you don't mind losing your Windows restore points.

Does anyone have the Intel SSD Toolbox? Intel took down all of their links and I have not been able to locate a mirror.

    SSD - 64GB vs. 128GB performance.

You've got it reversed. More space usually means more memory chips, which usually means more channels. More channels translates to better write performance. Most of the 128GB models also feature added cache to improve performance.

When will the 40gb kingston ssd be on newegg?

Are you using Windows 7 with the default Microsoft SATA driver? Or did you install some third-party driver, like the Intel Matrix Storage set? I don't know whether Crystal Disk reports the correct info on TRIM if a non-Microsoft SATA driver is used. The 2CV102HA firmware on the Intel 80GB and...

When will the 40gb kingston ssd be on newegg?

Some are reporting that the Kingston 40GB SSD is shipping with the 2CV102HA firmware, which is the same firmware that adds support for TRIM on Intel's G2 SSD drives. Can anyone confirm whether their Kingston 40GB SSD has the 2CV102HA firmware with TRIM?

    How to limit tenants usage?

As the previous poster suggested, I would consider a separate DSL line for your tenants. What you are doing now is not legal anyway. [Consumer cable and DSL contracts specifically prohibit all forms of resale.]

Processor required to decode HD H.264?

Note the above Anandtech article is out of date. See some hardware accelerated benchmarks here on a AMD 1.6GHz CPU. http://en.hardspell.com/doc/sh...ws_id=2361&pageid=2327 As alluded to above, software acceleration requires a good deal less processor time with CoreAVC.

Any decent way to dampen HDD vibrations?

Aluminum cases -- especially those with thinner aluminum -- amplify noise from hard drives and fans. The better "quiet PC" cases like the Antec Solo ($50 AR @ Newegg) are made of thick steel with suspension mounts for multiple hard drives.

    Stable motherboard for E8400

Buy your E8400 at Microcenter for $189. If you don't have a Microcenter, you can order it for $200 from TankGuys. I would take a look at the Gigabyte DS3L rev2.0 motherboard with 4GB G.Skill DDR2-800. It supports the E8400 out of the box. This motherboard will reduce the speed of your CPU...

Source of new Western Digital 340GB platter drives

Back on January 22, Western Digital announced that it was shipping new, faster drives based on higher-density 320GB platters. The first drive to use the new 320GB platter is the WD3200AAKS. However, only the new 00B3A0 version (manufactured beginning January 21) has the new 320Gb platter...

Did you look at the Xbit Labs Dual Core Shootout? As you can see, the faster version of the E4500 ($145 E4600) is about 50% slower than the E8400. That would make the E4400 60+% slower. I'm sure the E4500 would do just fine for your purposes today. However, how long do you intend to keep...

    system upgrade help

The X38/X48 is basically a P35 with support for SLI (2x video card) and somewhat higher FSB speeds for better overclocking. It also has PCIe 2.0 to provide the bandwidth necessary for SLI (2x video card) setups. If you don't need those things, save yourself some money and get a P35 motherboard.

    E8400 New Build

Any news on the new line of Intel 45nm Quads (Q9450/Q9550)?

Yes. Expect to pay a 15-20% premium to get one in March. Intel's list price is $316 in 1,000 unit quantities. Most vendors are taking orders at around $360.

Can you clarify this? Does the 3450 score 4.0 out of 5.9 in graphics, or 5.9 in graphics and 4.0 in gaming graphics? A score significantly below 5.9 in graphics will indicate a reduction in Vista responsiveness.

Suggestions on good motherboard for E8400

Just to elaborate on that, you are probably looking at 3.8-4.1GHz with a P35 vs. 4.0-4.3GHz with a X38/X48. You've got to consider whether that 200-300MHz is worth an extra $100-$200 that could be put toward a new graphics card, faster hard drive, or next-generation Nehalem system.

Suggestions on good motherboard for E8400

If you don't need SLI or RAID, the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L is an excellent board. It has the build quality of a $200 DFI for less than half the price. PCIe 2.0 is nothing to worry about with a single card unless you plan to buy a $400+ 9800GX2 with SLI on one card. By the time <$200 cards are...
