Maybe a little more detail on your config..
if you add the appropriate records to the dns you should be ok. Are authoritive for the domain? Using forwarding?
Agreed a switch...
however have you checked to see that the links are negtiated correctly? ie 10full/half/auto? (on the network card configuration) You need to make sure they are matching to maximize the link.
Getting mighty technical for a 3 node network with a couple of DB apps. :)
Definately in the app configuration. If these are MS access based applications....they are unfortunately like this. You may need to run a compair/compact on them (and do this regulary) Ive also found creating a mapped...

The creative way as described is the only way for this situation.
Basically you deny read on %systemroot%\system32\GroupPolicy for any group you do not want the policy to apply to. Be careful not to lock yourself out if you have background policy refresh enabled.
Or how about looking at your smb.conf file and making sure the share is browesable. You will also find in that file information regarding WINS. It is not neccessary for browsing the share. You may want to look at having your samba server becoming the master browser. The 2K box is proably winning...
What is your IP configuration? Everything needs to be 192.168.0/24 with the ICS host being 192.168.0.1. You need to make sure everything is in the same workgroup also(ie WORKGROUP).
Can you ping your laptop?
At the run dialog type.........dcpromo. This starts the installation. You will need either a functioning DNS server, to contact, or install DNS on the box your setting up AD. AD is completely dependent on DNS and if configured incorrectly your AD/DOmain will not function very well. After the...
Maybe it will include some different concepts or areas to study. Preparing for the test format is very important to adequately studying for an exam.

If you do any dev or run apps utilizing a JVM XP will crash constantly..not blue screen..but that loveable feature where the whole desktop(including applications) melts into/on top of itself..Lovely:)
You are going to have to do a little searching on the MS site.In paticular some files from the Office Resource kit are neccesary to impliment what you want. The GPO`s mentioned obviously havent been tried since terminal server program installation of MS office is done through a specific process.I...
Port 443 needs to be open.Thats the secure https which will allow you to login "securely" exposing it also allows the chance for someone to authenticate (that you may not want) to your network.
To make life even easier...create logon scripts to map drives-little more persistent. You could use a Linux box with samba..use apache for you web solution..and you will get a secure environment(with the neccessary configs)!
You can use NT as a router. Its as simple as enabling IP fowarding on right eth adapter.Put the DHCP on the same IP and foward Internet bound traffice in one and out the other.
Security is another matter all together!
Check your workgroup name on the XP box.The default is MyGroup not workgroup.Ive seen people get thrown with that one.TCP/IP will work fine.Just make sure Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled on the XP borg..I mean box.
Definate FIrewall..also VIrtual server in a DMZ capability.Anyway..Log in.Click on advanced....then access control. You have three groups where you can add machines by IP.Then you can either allow or block ports as you wish.Make sure you shut the common known holes!
I agree with the clean install suggestion. Before you hit that point shell out to DOS and Mount your 2K CD.cd to i386 and type winnt32 /checkupgradeonly this will scan your machine and alert you to any possibe conflicts or imcompatiblities. Then look for your drivers
Since you obviously dont have an XP rescue disk, nor do you have the recovery console installed....you could try to do a repair installation from your installation media.Option two would be to use partition magic and move things around a little.
Your post is a little confusing but......try using an account that is exactly the same on both machines.
ie 2K sam blue 9x sam blue.
Oh if you go to a domain win 9x needs an additional client to be AD aware.
Make sure Netbios over TCP/IP is checked in the advanced properties of your XP box.Win 9x cannot communicate vi pure TCP/IP.Its not enabled by default in XP.
Take the WIN98 Boxes down.Reboot your NT box.Bring the 98`s up.It may be a master browser issue (its seems to be netbios related) anyway create a local LMHOSTS file for each box. They still will broadcast, as up until now thats MS networking, then look for the static entries.
2K is far more bloated than 97.The extra "features" are actually anoyances.Importing exporting documents/spreadsheets/chart is not as good either.
97 does the job.
My 2 cents.
