This. If you don't need Windows for a specific reason, Apple has become a good choice. The days where they ran PowerPC and were always overpriced seem to be gone.
If you want a PC, does it really matter if it costs the same as a mac? Macs are great choices for a lot of people, but for those of us that need a PC for one reason or another, I don't think it matters if macs are the same price.
I'm having trouble deciding between these TWPs. I'm not too concerned with battery life, so normally I would prefer the performance increase. However, it seems like some of the 28 TWP pacakges are more affordable considering the other specs I want (SSD, no optical drive, etc.)
If I go with a...
The new HP Spectre 13 and Dell XPS 13 are not released yet and will also have the 4400. It seems like most manufacturers are going with the 4400 for their flagship 13" ultrabooks. Asus seems to be the only exception.
Interesting. Like OP I was thinking about HD5XXX but it sounds like that's not a good idea. I suppose if Dell, HP and others are using the 4400 in the premium ultrabooks they think it gives the best results?
3200 x 1800 is definitely ridiculous given that Windows/legacy applications don't properly support such high resolutions. I am on the fence about 2560 x 1440 but it seems like it could still be a headache for a lot of applications.
Other manufacturers are guilty too. A lot of the flagship haswell machines are not out despite what web pages say. For example, the new XPS 13 shows up on dells site but it says it will ship by Dec. 17. The HP spectre is also only going to be able to ship in December as well. These models were...
Yeah, I wish these manufacturers could be a little more precise although the stories I saw in September mentioned it could be November or even December for this one.
Amazon shows the basic UX301 variant as being for sale. Another variant is shown as "temporarily unavailable" and a third one is...
I don't have all the information and you could be right, but this does not seem like an obvious situation of ASUS being in the wrong to me.
It seems like the warranty card is the same thing as what the newegg specs were referring to. It seems like the product comes with a one-year accident...
Did your screen get damaged due to an accident like a drop, fire, spill or surge?
What else did that warranty card come with? Was there another warranty referenced? That sentence seems a bit ambiguous in that it could be the the warranty itself that is extra or it could be the year that is...
Can one buy an upgrade from Window 8.1 to Windows 8.1 pro? How does one go about doing this? I am considering buying a laptop that comes with 8.1 standard but I'd like to upgrade it to pro. (Without buying a full version of pro.)
That's true. At this point, if I didn't need specific Windows software (not games), I would be getting a MBP. It's the safest bet. But if I did that I would just use OSX full-time.
Yeah, it's hard for me to believe there wouldn't be caveats on this kind of setup. Even within a given...
Can't you play some older games or strategy games on integrated graphics? Seems like a lot of the reviews show ultrabooks playing Skyrim, even if it's not at maximum settings.
Macs are attractive these days, but they say you lose all the battery savings and trackpad advantages if you run Windows on a mac. It doesn't seem worth it if you mainly want to stick with windows. The keyboard/keyboard shortcuts alone are going to be irritating enough for most power users.
The shipping date shows up for late November which isn't too exciting.
Has your experience with the XPS line been that bad? It seems like it gets decent reviews.
When I upgrade the processor on the "thin and lights" that the HD graphics don't change with it. Aren't integrated graphics...
At the very least there will be the Zenbook Infinity 28W.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7012/asus-zenbook-infinity-28w-haswell-with-iris-5100-graphics-2560-x-1440-panel
At the upper level of 15W you have HD5000 and I believe 28W gives you Iris 5000 and 5100 graphics. How much difference in performance is there between the two systems? Are there other considerations besides battery life? I don't feel like I need all the battery life these new systems are...
On Asus's site there is mention of an 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD version. I wonder when this will start appearing. These have mini display ports which I have been waiting for.
So what is the difference with the infinity (301) then? Resolution? Does the infinity only come with iris graphics? Anything else?
I am fine with 1080p but i wouldn't mind the iris graphics.
So did they tell you they made a mistake or did they actually ship you one? If they do send you something it's pretty interesting since nobody has reported that it's out yet in the US.
I wonder about the price of the Zenbook will be close to the MBP. Weren't the previous models significantly more expensive than $1,300. If I didn't need a PC for specialized software (and no I don't want to use parallels), I'd get a MBP.
If I recall correctly the specs on the new MPB 13 at...
Yeah, it seems like there are a lot of high-res laptops that don't actually have any option to output it to an external monitor. The lack of DP in general on the new models to day is preventing me from upgrading.
I wanted to start a post asking if it makes sense to get one of these (cost aside) at this point.
I don't think everything is going be as nice as it is on OSX. My understanding is that 8.1 allows for higher scaling but doesn't solve the underlying problems (see e.g...
Is this actually replacing the XPS brand? I was wondering what the relationship between this and the XPS series is. If you select the best options for the 7000, what is left for the XPS to do?
It advertises 1080p as an option, but I can't customize it online. What's the story with that?
I am...
Maybe you have something specific in mind but I dont' see reviewers making a huge deal about such differences directly. They have to give those measurements. Good reviews quantify differences, but I don't see anything like "CNET recommends you buy this laptop because it is 2 mm thinner.
Except that often these other OSs don't actually give you access to the full web. For example, Netflix isn't supported on Linux. (Yes, I know there are clumsy workarounds.) Even if ChromeOS works something out for Netflix, there's always going to be some less used site that they don't think of.
