Don't believe everything you read. I've used both cards.... overall the 9000 Pro outperforms the 8500LE. Benchmark it or whatever else you want to do with it. I'll stick with my 9000 Pro.
I've had the 8500LE and now have the 9000 Pro. Maybe it's just me, but the 9000 Pro seems to run a little better. Technically it's suppose to be slower, but it's using architecture from the 9700. Video looks better on the 9000 than the 8500. The 9000 Pro is the better value in my opinion...
Well, just wanted to point out that OEM radeon is NEVER going to be made by ATI. It's always another party.
Drivers are available for the 9700... Catalyst 2.2 available at ATI's website should support 9700.
Check your core speed and memory speed.... make sure it matches for your particular model of 9700 pro. That's the only difference between Pro and non-Pro. Pro is faster

Comparing ATI Radeons:
7000 - 32MB SDR(!) memory, crippled: only 1 rendering pipeline vs. 2 on 64MB VIVO
7200 - 64MB SDR(!) memory, non-VIVO
7500 - Most like the 64MB DDR VIVO, improved: faster core/memory
8500 - Radeon2...
Seems to me that a lot of people bitch and moan about ATI drivers... and my observation being that most of them aren't even ATI card owners. Funny. I read rumors here and there about buggy drivers but never had any problems with drivers for my Radeon 64MB VIVO. Some dude was saying that ATI...
The ATI Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO is comparable to the ATI Radeon 7500. The 7500 benefits from faster core/memory.
The Radeon 7000 - don't even know why they sell it... shouldn't even be on the market.
Radeon 7200 - non VIVO.
Bought my Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO for $60 on eBay. Runs beautifully...
