3D Mark Vantage available for download

Well that was a wasted download... Q6600/2Gb/8800GTS(640Mb) - I watched the first test then hit escape. The graphics looked like they were from 5 years ago, and run at about 10fps. 3DMark06 looks infinitely better in terms of IQ and runs at much higher frame rates. What, exactly, is the point...

Now 6 Zalman VF900 Video Card Cooler Reviews......

The word you're looking for is volume. The volume of sales of high-end AGP cards is much lower than that of high-end PCI-e cards. If you make fewer of something, the unit cost tends to be higher. Ditto graphics heatsinks versus CPU heatsinks. The CNPS7000 may be superior to the VF-900 in...

    Zalman VF900 GPU cooler

Sorry to burst your bubble here but that's largely nonsense. The site you link to also has a number of glaring factual inaccuracies. In order then... The statement "Less weight is always bad" is simply wrong. If you stick a 500g cube of copper to a graphics card, I guarantee that it will cool...

Stupid Question: What does dual core mean in real-world performance right now?

It's most useful when you're a serious multi-tasker - i've recently gone dual-core and love the fact that I can encode/zip/compile something in the background and still use the system as normal. There are lots of little things like large hi-res print jobs not slowing the system down which...

CPU-Z Claims my 805 is running at 2.6v...

Okay, I'm running a Pentium D 805, completely stock, on a crappy ASROCK 775-TwinsHDTV (until I can afford a nice mobo and 2Gb of DDR2, anyway). I bought it new and plan to overclock in the future once the rest of the system is up to it. Having heard good things about the B0 revision, I...

Considering 7800GT-SLI - Have one XFX Card Already

Concise form is in the topic! I've done a quick search and can't find any up-to-date information on quite how good mixed-vendor SLI support is these days. I'm having trouble finding a matching card and may have to buy a different model - how likely is it to work? Also, is it just me, or is...

So why is another card needed just for physics?

Simply: Specialisation. Physics Processing requires incredible amounts of internal bandwith and performs simple but intensely repetitive calculations. Specialisation is currently on the way back - these things fluctuate - with AMD recently announcing the possibility of specialist co-processors...

Install XP From DOS Using USB

Okay, I'm tearing my hair out here trying to install XP on an old laptop. The CD-Rom drive is knackered and it's not removable so replacing it would require finding a compatible unit (almost impossible) and then re-building it to install. I'm currently trying to install off a USB cd-rom...

Using a TV as a computer monitor

Suggest you stop being patronising and Google something yourself. Dual-link DVI used six TDMS channels run at 165MHz. HDMI-B uses three at 330MHz. Saying they're the same is like suggesting that ten 100Mbit ethernet connections are the same as a single gigabit connection. In other news, I...

Using a TV as a computer monitor

Type B HDMI allows for twice the video bandwidth of DVI. Type A can carry 8 192Khz audio signals in addition to the same video signals as DVI. By definition, therefore, HDMI has more bandwidth. It's not simply DVI+S/PDIF.
  12. W

Using a TV as a computer monitor

Um, not quite... HDMI has roughly a third more bandwidth and the audio signal isn't in S/PDIF format - it can theoretically carry 8 audio streams at up to 32bit/192Khz each.

    Theatre Intercom Project

Hi All, I was just wondering whether any of you electronics whizzes could possibly help me with a little project I'm working on...? I'm trying to construct a four station push-to-talk intercom for use in a theatre. It needs to be cheap so I'll try to use standard PC headsets with two 3.5mm...

how do you figure out the speed of amd

Oh, and AMDs scheme is based on a Athlon XP Thunderbird running at the same clock, not a P4.
  16. W

how do you figure out the speed of amd

Nope, no such direct comparison does, or can exist. Some AMD chips are faster than others at given clock speeds. Some AMD chips are faster than others with identical ratings. Equally some P4 chips are faster than others at given clock speeds. To top it all off, the difference varies...

    Universe Expanding

Equally, it's possible that the big bang is a one-off, freak occurrence which simply happened because something not happening was too unlikely. We're getting into the realms of metaphysics here where all (most) speculations are equally valid!

Dude should I get a Dell?

If you have to ask, then probably... 6800GT has 33% more pixel shaders than the 6800 and runs quicker. There's a fairly significant difference. I thought that both were pretty much extinct following the introduction of the 6800GS?

Asteroid with 100,000 times Hiroshima bomb's power could hit in 2036

Momentum is a function of speed, given by p=mv... If it's on a collision course, any change in momentum may well cause it to miss. It occurs that the chances of us being able to accurately predict that 25 years in the future is roughly nil though. At those kinds of scales we're effectively...

    Intel Heatsink Attachment...

Okay, so I've just bought an ECS RS400-A motherboard and a Celeron D 335 to build a PC. The stock HS/F has the kind of lever-hooks that attach to an X-Frame that would be around the CPU area. The motherboard comes with no such attachment and has only four holes around the CPU. Anyone who's...

What would be a good power supply for a 1U chassis

Seriously dude, if you OC two 100w+ CPUs in a 1U chassis you will not be able to put it anywhere in your house without being able to hear it. I built a couple of 1U Dual-Xeon machines last year and they make a racket you would not believe. Build a standard ATX machine in the smallest case...

Swelling wormhole could engulf the universe..

If I were trying to define maths, I couldn't do much better than "Maths is the universal explanation for phenomena in real life that we observe." There are many many things that have been predicted by maths (black holes, for one) that were not discovered in real life until afterwards.

    Instantaneous communication over light-year+ distances.

I'd still argue that nothing is transmitted whatsoever. You simply determine something, which in turn collapses a proabability wave. It just so happens that this wave desribes two physically separated entities. While our notions of locality become compromised, nothing is transmitted between the...

    Instantaneous communication over light-year+ distances.

Here is just one of several tests that have been carried out which have proven the theory beyond all reasonable doubt. In what circumstances would instantaneous propogation make more sense?
  28. W

    Instantaneous communication over light-year+ distances.

Seriously, trust me on this one. The consensus amongst the scientific community (other than the occasional nut-job) is that gravity propogates at c. First linky i found. There have been no experiments using entangled photons to synchronise clocks because it is impossible to do so. Link...

the universe cant blow up......can it?

At the risk of going all theological on you, that's pretty much what Genesis says. If you study the original Hebrew version of the Old Testament the Biblical account of the creation is written in the style of, effectively, a children's story. It's certainly not written as a historical narrative...

POLL: Which sounds better? Gigaworks S750 vs Logitech Z-5500?

Almost certainly the Gigaworks. The two-way satellites in the Gigaworks system will give you much crisper treble than the single-driver affairs in the Z-5500. It's nigh-on impossible to make a 3" driver play well from ~130Hz-30Khz.

No it doesn't. It has been experimentally verified that changes in a gravitational field propagate outwards at lightspeed.

    Instantaneous communication over light-year+ distances.

I'm not quite sure where this misconception comes from but that's not what happens. If that were the case, information could be transmitted. There's an explanation here. For a simpler explanation, Silverpig's post explains it pretty nicely (and also explains why information can't be...

    Artificial Gravity

Not strictly true - gravity can also affect particles with zero mass. The sun causes a measurable deflection in the light passing nearby from distant stars. Photons are expected by most physicists to have zero mass (zero non-rest mass) and therefore they shouldn't be affected if we use that...

the universe cant blow up......can it?

There's no evidence to suggest that the universe is infinite. In fact, given the way that the universe is currently expanding it's almost certainly not infinte! Also, until we can objectively define time there's no basis for suggesting that time is infinite. With reference to the original...

    Instantaneous communication over light-year+ distances.

It's actually been successfully shown that gravity propogates at the speed of light. If the sun were to suddenly disappear then we'd stop measuring its effect at the same time as the sunlight vanished. Gravitrons are yet to be observed. This is probably because gravitational force is by far...

The Mr. Miyagi School of Karate

In my view, it's similar to making those learning the piano practice scales and arpeggios. I try to make my students practice small exercises repeatedly until they can play them perfectly. I was under the impression that Planck time is the smallest interval we can use before quantum effects begin to dominate - effectively the time a photon takes to travel a Planck length. Anything below that is meaningless outside of very tricky quantum-mechanical calculations. I would be...
