It looks like the E18 error is not just a problem with the A70. The Canon Digital Elph S110 also has the same problem. The problem may be in the entire Canon lineup.

Your slow-response on the wired port was probably an network card "auto-negotiate" problem. Try setting your PC's NIC to 100Mb/s Half Duplex (rather than auto-negotiate).
I see this very often with many network devices. Every vendor seems to do "auto-negotiate" a bit differently...
