thanks jcmkk.
i used arctic III on the cpu. my usual temp is about 43 degrees, i think.
i'm using the fan that came with the alpha.
i'll try your tip.

i love my 120gxp. no probs. and i don't expect any. this is a different drive with different technology and was built when they knew about the previous problems.
ibm won't discuss the other drive because of the law suit. it would be tough for them to win the suit if they admit on the board...
i wouldn't even bother with the fitness test. i've had drives crash that looked fine on the test. i just told ibm, "the drive's messed up" and they replaced it.

I need to run some cat5 cable along the outside of a building. i was looking at the outdoor rated cable and also considering using conduit with UTP. what do you think is best?
also, what else do i need? do i need a surge protector of some sort? and where would i put it?
i'm new at this...

was the fan he heard the ps fan or the cpu fan? either one going bad would cause the problem. when you power on does anything happen at all? no, it's the ps.
that ps is fine if you find no other.

you gotta hit ibm's "sounds of disaster" section on their site.
you can listen to different sounds that a drive makes when it crashes. see if your drive sounds like any of them.
what fun!
people keep bashing ibm because of the past probs with 60and70GXPs. however, i have not heard about any probs with the new 120gxp. why are we still bashing?
I received a response from IBM today as follows:
Thank for your interest in our Deskstar 120GXP disk drive range.
The 333 monthly (11 hours per day) 'Recommended power-on hours' stated in the Deskstar 120GXP data sheet should not be taken as an indication that the drive has this as an upper...
After reading the latest issue of CPU magazine I wrote this letter to the editor:
Dear CPU:
I must say that I thoroughly enjoy reading CPU magazine. However, I disagree with something stated in the April 2002 issue. Tim Parker (I don?t know his e-mail address) wrote an article entitled Top...
did you expect them to change their position? i've been practicing law for 7 years and have not seen a case of this magnitude where a large company says, "you know what, we really are at fault. we'll spend a few million to replace all those drives" riiiiiiiiiiight.
plus, ibm has been sending...
thanks for the advice kgraeme, that's kinda what i was thinkin. dang. it would be a sweet gig workin for a school district. all those benefits and days off. . . . . . .. . ..
Hey guys (and gals) thanks!
i don't think i need to worry about putting the stuff on a win network n stuff. the job is for a school district that uses all Macs (not MACS, hee).
i'm a little intimidated. i'm sure i could learn it for the job but the bigger question is do i want to take this...
my advice, first do a search. this topic has come up a few times.
the 120gxp is a faster drive. i wouldn't worry too much about the 75GXP and 60GXP problems. IBM knew about these problems (due to a lawsuit) when they built the 120GXP. it is a better drive.
the seagates are nice but if...
is it that different? how long should it take me to get a handle on it? all the network and hardware stuff is similar right?
i appreciate any help or links to helpful sites.
thanks,

if you read some of the reviews, you'll see that the IBM 120GXP drive is faster than the Maxtor and Seagate drives. DO NOT buy an IBM 60GXP or 75GXP. There's a class action lawsuit against IBM because of the reliability probs with those drives. However, IBM changed the drive when they issued...
because i went to a larger font windows xp is cutting of the icon text. for example, instead of "icon searcher" under the icon on my desktop i get "icon sear". how do i tell windows to show the whole icon text?
