If I have an Ubuntu server

Ya You could also use IPCOP or pfsense firewalls for this. You could setup squid as a transparent proxy, so there wouldn't need to be any proxy configuration that needed to be done on any of your computers. A side benefit here is that it will work as a web cache and speed up web surfing...

Sure. I can access them via SSH along with run any commands. You will need to open whatever port you are using for ssh into your pogo from outside of your home firewall. The default is 22. Then you can run commands, or if you would like a nice GUI interface, download and install the free...

Linus Torvald's first usenet announcement about Linux 20 years ago today

I dabbled previously with various GUI driven Linux flavors, but it wasn't until Ubuntu about 4 years ago that I began to run a box and stick with it. I ran it side by side with my XP box at work and synergy to share the keyboard and mouse. About a year after I started this at work, my home...

Guide for installing a Full Debian install on a $33 PogoPlug

Took a look at Optware. I think this sounds interesting with the exception of the the fact that this method makes extensive modifications to the core OS as you make it work and install packages. The Debian installation method I went through just changes the boot priority of the device, and...

    Linux server script?

Isn't the windows backup just looking for a file of the same name from a previous job? If so, you could just have a scheduled rename command that runs in a scheduled cron. I don't know what the backup job file output looks like, but if it is job30.bkf, just rename it. run man mv to get the...

Ok I got LAMP going on the Pogo and have a joomla sample site working on it if anyone wants to see it in action. I figured Joomla would be a good test for the box. I do not have Joomla's built in caching enabled for the site, so it is doing the database querys and building the page for each...

    WHS 2011 $50 @ SuperBiiz

Also, one feature worth considering for the new WHS 2011 is the ability to backup your server in the same manner that the workstations are backed up. -Makes an image and can be restored easily with nothing but a blank server destination hard drive and a bootable CD that then connects to your...

Still had the web page up and they have a different adapter available for this thing to take it off of the wall. This one looks interesting for an IPCop or Pfsense router installation. A bit pricey for $129, but cheaper than my old FitPC computer that I bought to use for IPCop for $300 a few years ago. http://www.globalscaletechnologies.com/p-32-guruplug-server-plus.aspx

I just took my Pogo apart. I yanked on the bottom of the pink stand near the bottom pulling straight out the front of the device. It made an ugly snapping sound and came apart. Then the clear sleve comes off and the two white halves come apart easily. I am left with some plastic tabs that...

No wall wart. The power supply is internal to the device. It draws about 4 watts. No fans either. Takes a good while to boot though. I haven't timed it. It would make a nice little car box. The trim on the device could be removed to reduce space requirements.

    File Server Data Backup

If you have an image of the computer using Acronis and you are happy with that, you could use Robocopy to copy the shared files you want to backup. This is assuming your OS image isn't often changing, but your shared data is often changing. Robocopy is a nice free utility that you could do a...

Debian is pretty easy to setup file serving. Ya I would say so with the exception of the onboard ram, which is 256 megs. Not sure what the processor is, other than an ARM. It isn't a speed demon, but it is capable of maxing out the speed of the USB interface during file serving. Plenty of available ram on my rig with just SSH services...

Looking for a quiet case for my media server

I would like to toss my wall mounted computer solution into the mix. It is not a case, but it can take up less room, be quieter, and look more interesting. You could get a USB DVD drive to add to the solution presented below. This would at least look nicer mounted to the wall than a standard...

Will Verizon FiOS allow FTP servers?

What about the T-1? Why do you want to have this? Just get a bigger pipe for your DSL and save a ton of money. As for the firewall, you could get a real, dedicated device, but if you are coming from a 4 port router, it sounds like you really don't need anything bigger. I'd say get a router...

How can I secure my data while I am using unsecure wifi?

If you are using a financial web site that doesn't use SSL, you probably should reconsider this institution. Need new router, suggestions? Have static IP and I have server running multiple VMs

Also, as long as it is a docsis modem, comcast will work with it. You will just need to call them with the numbers off of the back for them to authenticate it on their network. Bridge mode on one of their comcast modem/router devices is going to suck. I recommend avoiding that.

Need new router, suggestions? Have static IP and I have server running multiple VMs

This exact issue came up for a buddy of mine last week. You can deny accepting Comcast's router/modem device and instead use your own. If you don't want to pay for a docsis 3.0 modem, you can get a docsis 2.0 modem instead. The max speed of docsis 2.0 is 35 megabits. If your data speed...
