Is this a common symptom with Windows XP?

This is just a guess. The same thing will happen in W2K if the machine is in hibernation or if you have set your diskdrives to power down after a set time. I would be checking power management settings to see your hard drive and hibernation settings. When I come in to work in the morning and...

Let's crack down the XP shut down problem?

Roxio's DirectCD will not even work with W2K SP2 and they have no fix for it. This product has been bug ridden ever since they introduced it. I used to use DirectCD with W98 constantly but with W2K it's a disaster. What's even worse is that Roxio doesn't appear to know what they are doing. Even...

AnandTech's New Forum Server - What OS And DBS Are You Using

Thanks Yo_Yo_Ma. Oops that's Yo_Ma_Ma, sorry. Now I know what "Forum" software but not what operating system and database server (Access, SQL, Oracle.....) they are using with the dual Athlon system described.

AnandTech's New Forum Server - What OS And DBS Are You Using

Having read the description of AnandTech's updated forum server with the dual Athlons I find it strange that there is no mention at all of software. There are a few references to Linux groups that helped in one way or another but no mention of software. I think the forum server, as well as...

I don't know if if this is old news or not but I received the Win XP RC1 CD in the mail this morning so they must be shipping. Anybody else get it yet? Edited here: It came in a nice blue plastic folder, much like DVD's come in when you purchase them. Well packed in a bubble pack shipper and...

NEWS - Microsoft charging extra for MP3 & DVD support in XP

Personally I'm happy they are doing it this way. Now I feel pretty sure that third party encoders like Lame, Audio Catalyst, Ogg Vorbis etc. will work pretty much the same way they do in W2k and it saves me money. I've never used MS players or encoders anyway. I'm not knocking MS's products I...

A strange one... but can anyone help?

Are you sure the space after IRC is really a space and not an unprintable character of some kind. People used to do this kind of thing in DOS to keep people from erasing files. Can you copy the file to a floppy by using copy irc*.* to A:\ ? You might be able to fool around with it there.

On Activation vs. Registration in Win XP

Following your logic Hans the automobile manufacturers are forcing you to use gas or diesel fuel. If you want Hydrogen you're screwed (at least for now). Besides you can always keep your W98 to play games. If you buy new games it's a decision you'll have to make. Nobody will force this on you.

CDRW and Audio Hardware problems with Win 2k Professional

The problem your having is most likely because of installing the version of EZCD you did. Disappearing CDR/Ws are one of the common problems with Roxio software. You might also try removing the aspi32.dll driver you may have installed (just rename it for a test so you can name it back if...

CDRW and Audio Hardware problems with Win 2k Professional

I can only talk about the Adaptec now Roxio, a company they spun off) and their CDR software. If you buy it at retail and don't find a sticker on it warning you against installing...

How to disable the auto pop-up screen in IE?

Did you right click the tray icon and go to Preferences, then check the Detection section and try marking "Smart". Once I did this never had a problem. I take that back (and this is not PopUp Killer's fault) sometimes a web page will pop up some kind of warning like "enable...

How do I keep dos prompt from closing when a prog finishes in Win2K?

Depending on how the shortcut was created and what it points to you can have a "Close On exit" check box in W2K. I have a great number of programs installed with a Wise installer that do have it. But I admit I also have some that don't and haven't taken the time to figure out why.
