W7 Taskbar icons getting "stuck"

You know if you're running W7 then you are participating in a beta program. If you don't file a bug now then you can expect it to be in the final product.

So why does windows 7 use less memory and run faster?

Is system cache being reported the same? Vista itself doesn't use that much memory it just pre-caches the sh1t out of things to make them run faster when you actually go to use them.

Parents interested in gaming...

My Dad REALLY digs portal. He also digs FEAR of all things after watching me play it. I'm not sure I would recommend this one though. My retired grandparents are having to be sneaky to get the computer away from each other so they get a turn playing Bookworm Adventures.

At this rate though they are essentially paying themselves 5x the salary of other developers because it's taken 5x as long to get this thing out. If Duke turns out to be an "average" blockbuster like say Gears of War, Halo, Fallout, Crysis etc.. then they money they make divided by 5 will...

On XP Pro boot, message about Registry data recovery

Windows has two copies of every registry file: system & system.alt software & software.alt etc.. It journals changes to the registry and if a change doesn't make it, it can flip back to the .alt version. You basically came this || close to a 'missing or corrupt system\system32\config\..'

Sure, I don't mind that part. The part that bothers me is that the NPCs behavior magically changes as if they are all tapped into the Karma of the universe like the Dali fvckin Lama. If I go stealing somewhere and never get caught yet do good deeds in public I should be treated positively...

C Drive size and performance

You can actually slow things down if you partition improperly. If you have a single drive stick to a single partition. If you are using multiple spindles then you can get creative with say pagefile, OS, programfile locations etc. 300gig raptor I assume? I'm digging mine. Big...

IE locks up randomly

It will remove flash 10 (disable it anyway) or any other offenders. You then selectively add things to determine where the problem was. It's just a sledgehammer to get stuff stable again.

Is Steam becoming the main way for pc game distribution?

It's a horrible experience though. Performance is not contstant and firewalls give it fits unless you do some manual configuration which is frankly a hassle.

FEAR 2

You can't really see vertex and shader effects well in static screenshots anymore. You need video to really get a feel for it (think of like heat-wave effects from fire). That said, I would be just as content if FEAR 2 released with the FEAR 1 graphics engine. I expect the gameplay will rock.

fallout 3 vs. oblivion

I really found sneaking and bows to be fun in Oblivion. They have a great stealth element in the game. This is something that Karma screwed up in Fallout (how the hell do they penalize someone who didn't get caught!)

Why are there so many violent/grotesque PC games?

Movies are violent too. Video games are interactive though and frankly "Drama" games don't lend themselves to interactivity the way "Action" games do. That said, I still object to your whole premise. There are tons of nonviolent games out. Hell just go look at the games list for the Wii.

I think he's got a good case regarding his DVD not functioning (No indication of hardware breaking) and some software being disabled like process explorer. As a common spore user would not be able to tell between a broken DVD and a disabled DVD they could incur repair costs.

As I posted. Try the built in utilities first. They are the safest way to go. If they fail it is because you are not in a configuration they support and they will fail harmlessly. At that point go spend money.

Fallout 3 questions

Dunno, you're in uncharted territory there. I don't think it will affect anything though. You're essentially done with Vault 101 when you leave. There is a side quest that involves it but it's unrelated to the main quest.
