RHCE- how many have passed on the first attempt?

tried it a few months ago and did a 78.5 on the 8.0 exam. Needed an 80. Wasn't terribly hard. You really have to know your stuff to have a chance of remotely finishing it. The local stuff is what killed me. All the network services, samba, nfs, apache, nis, squid, sendmail I had no prob...

Redhat to Release 9 on March 31st

We're comfortably running 8.0 on production servers. Their errata is kept current whether it be 7.2 7.3 or 8.0. So there isn't really room for concern in my opinion.

AH! New to Red Hat Linux 8.0...

I'd entirely recommend against a -U flag when dealing with a kernel. I'd only use the -i flag.

    Apache - Increasing the HARD_SERVER_LIMIT

I'd entirely recommend, given your comfort level, to stick with a linux distro and that distros packaging methods. Red Hat's httpd and php packages will provide all of the modules and configured support that you will ever need. It also makes upgrading a particular item much quicker and cleaner...

    Apache - Increasing the HARD_SERVER_LIMIT

Common signs are if anyone ever experiences page timeouts where apache is unable to load the page in time while it is fully functional. We use more sophisticated monitoring mechanisms to give us reports as to concurrent connection statistics on a per server basis, allowing us to make the call...

    Apache - Increasing the HARD_SERVER_LIMIT

You would need to compile apache, and then compile php and reference the php module in your apache configuration file. Depending on what you require out of php (imap or mysql support, etc.) will determine how you compile it. I'm uncertain as to your need for more than 256 concurrent...

    Apache - Increasing the HARD_SERVER_LIMIT

There is an entry in httpd.conf for this called MaxClients (apache 1.3.x/2.x). Determines the maximum number of connections apache can handle at one time. Modify this number and restart apache. You don't need to recompile apache or php for such an increase.

    RedHat 8.0: Stopping lpd [FAILED]....

Can't stop the service if it never started successfully to begin with. Likely erroring out because lpd isn't starting -- likely not starting because it requires a valid host entry in /etc/hosts pertaining to your system's hostname.

    Some Stupid Linux Questions

Assuming it's similar to redhat, you can run the setup utility (netconfig with redhat) and specify what you want. Config files should be somewhere near /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 eth1, etc. Bootproto entry set to equal dhcp is what you want. ifdown eth0 ifup eth0 drops your...

    .htaccess - SOLVED!

It shouldn't take them 3 hours to resolve a simple issue relating to an .htpasswd file. You might try finding a host with a competent support department.

    .htaccess - SOLVED!

Ok -- for obvious reasons I can't recommend anything else regarding your dixiesys account, I'm not in tune to their server configurations or methodologies -- I had assumed this was your web server. I'd recommend discussing it with their support department, or another dixiesys user here might be...

    .htaccess - SOLVED!

Without seeing the .htaccess file or getting shell access to the system in question I can't really think of anything else to recommend. What do the apache error logs say on the failed logins? This should tell you what the problem is. the correct syntax to generate/re-write an htpasswd file is...

    .htaccess - SOLVED!

Does it start to display some of the page and keep asking you for the login information? Do you have varying .htaccess files in directories above this one in question? Does your .htaccess file specify access for the user you added to the .htpasswd file? edit: paste the contents of your...

    .htaccess - SOLVED!

A common mistake is the permissions settings on the .htpasswd file. They need to be readable by the user apache is running as. So typically a permission setting of 644 (rw-r--r--) is what I recommend, somewhere in an isolated non web served location.

    Redhat question

That's probably the hostname associated with a reverse lookup of the IP address your ISP's DHCP server assigned you. This is normal behavior when using DHCP, do not be alarmed by it. It just merely represents your systems recognized hostname, which services often will require to perform...

Need converter for fiber and copper

There's a device for this and I've purchased a few a while back but can't remember the brand name, started with an A I believe. I'll check around and see if I can find it. 1000 base SX to 100 base T, I believe it was around $250.

DNS record help for domain name

Well if you previously made the request before the change had been made, then the cache at your ISP level is going to need to be cleared. I'd recommend waiting a good 12-24 hours before trying the query again. DNS propagation and caching is the nature of dealing with the namespace beast...

WHICH FILE SYSTEM BEST FOR GAMES - NTFS OR FAT32?

that write-up basically stipulates that NTFS is better for everything. The only time I ever take fat into consideration is when the file system must be readable/writeable by various operating systems.

How to access NTFS partition from Linux?

You will need to compile a new kernel, redhat's kernel is not going to support ntfs by default. There is a kernel-source rpm on the 2nd or 3rd redhat CD, install this RPM then do the following from a command line: 1. cd /usr/src/linux-2.4 2. make mrproper 3. cp -p...

Best Linux distro for a server?

One thing positive I have to say about Debian given my limited experience, is that the very first time I tried installing it, it was very straightforward and logical, to the point of easy.

Best Linux distro for a server?

I'm not sure how much time I want to put into it -- I ran through the config after a re-install, didn't see anything close to a radeon 9500 (not even sure I saw an 8500), and if I'm correct it is tossing in XFree 4.1? I'm pretty sure 4.2 and beyond handle the newer ATI cards, but I know that...

Best Linux distro for a server?

Sometimes I still consider myself an extreme newbie. Debian's installed on a partition here I just don't get to using it. I've gotten to a point where I like my things to just work, with minimal issues, between needing to get 1000 lines of working code down in an evening or...

Best Linux distro for a server?

I would recommend redhat to this user because it has far greater use, the support community is larger, the distribution is commercially tested and has hardware support for a greater amount of hardware. The distribution is more current and the red hat network services will hold your hand with...

    So what is new?

The problem was trying to get a higher resolution via DVI -- I'm not sure what I did, I removed the ATI driver, reinstalled it, generated a new XFree config file, and am finally getting 1600x1200.

    So what is new?

Yes, I tried ATI's driver and cannot get beyond 1280x1024 @ 75 regardless of what I do. I gave it another go tonight with similar results. This is going to be a huge thorn in my ass :( edit: interestingly enough I never thought to try an analog feed -- it works at 1600x1200 @ 60 via analog...

    So what is new?

We're still discussing it. The size of impact has yet to be determined -- 7.3 is now scheduled to be discarded by the end of 2003 from what I've read, and we are heavy 7.3 users. We are by no means red hat dependant -- nearly all services are taken as source whether that be Apache, Exim, BIND...

    So what is new?

not much to gloat about with red hat right now -- I've had this issue with red hat's ATI support that I haven't been able to get around, and not really asked for help because it seems slightly embarassing/ridiculous. Maybe if I hide it in here in your thread it won't be as bad -- I put in an...

    Configuring DNS/Apache for MX?

I would recommend the following An A record to point blah.com to the IP address of your box. An A record to point mail.blah.com to the IP address of ABC's mail server. An MX record for mail.blah.com This mail handling is done via DNS, not through apache's config file. You will only want to...

If the system is constantly rebooting during cd reading activity I would guess a bad cable to the cd drive, a poor connection, or try a different cd drive.
