lines in sky with ATI 9700

my brother has an ATI 9700 and, although the graphics are great overall, he has these dark lines in the sky when playing quake3 or (most) games based on the q3 engine. they look like the seams of the map (ie, the outline of the cube in which the map is based...if that makes sense). is this a...

I noticed I've been getting the following error in the System Event Viewer: It seems to occur at startup. anyone know what this is or how to fix it? a google search wasn't very revealing.... thx!

Give me Reason you changed from Win98 to Win2000 or XP

1) got tired of hanging on shutdown in win98se 2) got tired of memory being used up with no apps running 3) got tired of sluggish performance just upgraded from win98se to win2k in May. i will never go back. the win2k/xp kernal is so much faster/stable. i didn't go for XP yet b/c i wanted...

SOYO Dragon Ultra KT333: 1/5 divider or not?

i think the soyo website indicates a 1/5 divider for the platinum board. as far as i know, there isn't one for the black one. there is a new overclocker bios, but from what i've read, it doesn't include 1/5 divider either.

thanks, but unfortunately thats not it. i just tried it again with my cpu temp at 38C and still got the same error message. thanks though.

thanks. i tried running memtest86 and it didn't find any errors. i also reseated the memory and it didn't help. any other thoughts? specifically, i was trying to the Java2 SDK (1.3.1_03). thanks again.

overclocking XP1800+; factory fan sufficient?

has anyone ever used trace tape to unlock the multiplier? i was checking out this kit when i found this trace tape at highspeedpc.com. the trace tape seems like a much cleaner way to go, although a bit pricier... hmm... for $20 more, i probably could have gotten a 1900+...

overclocking XP1800+; factory fan sufficient?

So does "unlocking" only refer to the frequency ratio? it would seem so from what Dexion just wrote... also, what temps should be good for this cpu? right now i'm getting 37C (29C case temp) for a non-overclocked (would that just be "clocked") 1800+. it goes up to 42C (31C case) when gaming...

someone reviewed the board on newegg (here) and mentioned the same problem. s/he said the latest usb drivers fix this problem for you winXP users. i presume you get them here. hope this helps...

i'm also using the onboard lan w/o any problems or issues. i did have to coordinate with my isp so that they would recognize my computer, but other than that, i've had no issues.... hopefully, we won't have the same experiences as Cybordolphin...

I also ust put everything together with win2k last night and it's all running smoothly. it's great. only thing is, the boot up time really is long -- i didn't think it would take longer than my old pc (p3-600mhz / win98se), but i think it does. other than that, i'm very happy so far...

fyi: new bios for this board came out on 4/24. maybe that'll help some of you... BIOS here btw, i got mine on friday. i have to wait to set it up on thursday though b/c i don't have a case yet. :( hopefully i'll have something positive to report. oh, btw, still no word from newegg on why...

that's good point. i didn't think of that.... although i have experience tiptoeing (sp?) around capacitors, i have never been inside a monitor before and probably shouldn't take any chances. i will open it to see if anything unusual is in plain sight, but won't investigate any further. thanks. :)

no, it hasn't been dropped, moved or shakin. in fact, it really hasn't been moved from it's spot for nearly 2 years now... oh, and apparently there were no problems booting up this morning. and it happened 2x yesterday... so i'm even more confused now.

it scared the hell out of me this evening. when i booted up after a few hours of being shut down, the monitor was hissing very loudly as though it were leaking air/gas. very odd -- i thought it was going to blow up. once the shell booted, there was a lot of flickering and horizontal lines...

i just noticed that newegg was out of stock 2 days ago and as of last night it isn't even listed anymore.... I will write sales at newegg to find out why, but it seems odd. hopefully, it's just a computer glitch.... i'd hate to think there was a recall or something.... (i'm such a pessimist!).

Soyo Dragon Plus Problems

i just helped my brother build a system about a week ago (a little longer) and had the same problem. fans started, but nothing else and no POST. we flipped the power sw connector around and POSTed without a problem. as for no beeps, i'm guessing that the case speaker connector was backwards...

Whats the best VIA KT333 board?

I was thinking of waiting for the Soyo Dragon Ultra too, which is due out this month. I read there will also be a "Lite" version, which would hopefully be more affordable. This is the first thread i've read where soyo was mentioned. Does anyone else have an opinion on soyo mobos? reviews...

Can anyone tell me if this is a good mobo?

why not go for the Soltek 75CRV5? uses the KT333 chipset, which is a little faster. it seems to get good reviews (here's one). and i just helped my brother upgrade his computer with it last week -- we had no problems at all and it runs very stable.

newbie question: installing a fan....

as promised, i'm writing back after installing the fan. the case temp is cooled down to 29C and the CPU actually dropped a little too, to 41C. that was a shock!

actually, i think altonb1 inadvertently answered my original question when he said, << I have one fan powered from the same chain as my hard drives, the other in the chain with my CD drives. >> i assumed he meant that they just daisy chain together, which is one of the things i was thinking...

thanks for such a quick reply. but i guess i should elaborate a little. the only fan in the case is in the power supply, which is located right over a giant heatsink on the cpu. there are vents in the front of the case, but it would be difficult to mount a fan there to pull in more air...
