The reason read errors are troublesome even though the disc may play fine in a standalone is that you have no way to back up or make another copy of the disc.
As to the question of Yi Jhan or Longten in 50- or 100-spindles...I ordered a spindle of 100. The original shipment was Yi Jhan and the...
Okay, after being somewhat encouraged that the disc I burned played all the way through, I took another step and tried backing that disc up. Complete failure. Tried doing it by copying (unencrypted files of course), using dvdshrink, dvddecrypter, smartripper...everything failed with read error...
Got the replacement shipment for the YiJahns and these ones are longten001. They have a white star near the center of the disc.
Burned one and verify failed, so I ran a read-error test in dvdinfopro. Hundreds of blocks with errors.
Then I decided to throw it in another drive and run the test...
Question for folks using NEC-1300A drives:
If you're getting successful burns, are the discs you have YI JHAN or LONGTEN?
It seems the problems might be with the YI JHAN discs.
I just talked to a Shop4Tech guy and he said I can either return them for refund or exchange. He suggested the...
Sorry should have said these show up as "Yi Jhan 001" in DVDInfoPro. "Yi Jhan 001" was added by Herrie I think under a generic writing strategy in firmware 1.08v2. It's in the list of media added in the official 1.09 firmware.
[edit: quickly looking over release notes for firmwares 1.08-1.0A, I...
I got a spindle of 100 of these yesterday. They don't have any visible physical defects (scratches or discoloration). I have, however gotten 100% failure on the 4 discs I have tried so far.
I have an NEC-1300A based dvd recorder. The original firmware was 1.07, which would not even recognize...
Just a question for those who burn with no problems and then wind up have playback problems:
- Are you using Nero 6?
- If you are, do you use the verify option?
I always have verify turned on. Many times the burn will complete with no problems, but the verify will fail. When I check the disc...
I don't know what plans they're offering now but I am dealing with retention this week because my Vision phone (LG5350) refuses to do a pc connection and they're bending over backwards to send me new phones and to make me happy. I think the general attitude is still to keep good customers...
If you happened to get a Clie NX-60 last week at Circuit City with a pricematch to CUSA ($279.99), go back to CC this week and get a free $25 gift card. It's in the Sunday newspaper ad: gift card with any Palm OS pda.
Well, that's a surprise. I ordered the free battery for the A500 on the website last Thursday and it arrived today via Airborne Express. What's more, I was expecting a standard battery, but they sent an extended battery instead!
[edit] This 2 phone/$200 rebate is good at any retailer. Eligible phones are LG-1010, Samsung A460, Kyocera 2255, Samsung N240, Kyocera 2345, Sanyo 6200, Sanyo 5150, LG 4nE1, Kyocera 1135, PCS9155sp, Samsung I300 and the Sierra Aircard 510.
Here's what I got for a retention plan tonight. I hope it's a good deal.

$15.00 for phone #2 (started 1998)
$15.00 for phone #3 (started 2001)
500 anytime, shared
2000 nights and weekends starting at 8p, shared
wireless web for each phone...
TIMEKEEPER: Two questions if you have a sec:
(1) the belt holster: do they just hand it to you with the car charger and earbud? I was at my Costco tonight and the "Exclusively for Costco Members" card that was on the stand didn't mention that. It did say $35 service credit, free 12 months Voice...
I took the bezels off the three drives I have:
Dell Inspiron 4k CDRW, the new NEC combo, and a Toshiba DVD
I was hoping to be able to switch either the Dell or the Toshiba onto the NEC, but the connectors didn't match up. So I just put the Dell bezel against the new NEC one and trimmed off...
Just to follow up, I ordered one from HMR and received it today. It was fairly simple to dissassemble the caddy for my Dell Inspiron 4K CDRW and put this one in. I couldn't swap the bezel so I had to trim with scissors to make it fit. It seems to work great!
It looks like NEC introduced this at CeBIT in March 2002. Here's their announcement:
http://www.nec-cebit.com/press_detail.asp?press_id=58
It doesn't show up on the US NEC site, but it is on the German site:
http://www.necd.de/productdetail.php?id=148
I still can't tell if this will work in...
Went into the store and picked up a Mag 14" LCD monitor (about 15 on hand in Pleasant Hill, CA). It rang up as $269.99, but the rebate form was for $50, as it is on the website. The wrong rebate form printed up and the manager tried to give me one with the wrong model number and offer dates and...
I've noticed completion and speed at Usenetserver have both gotten much better this week. Newsbin says they have three servers online and a fourth is coming next week.
For those of you using Easynews, don't forget their "free gigs" feature. If you become part of their "team" for the United...
CompUSA is having a "Crazy Sale" through Saturday that's only being advertised on the radio. Very few people in the store I went to actually knew about it. (No shelf tags, etc.) I picked up the Hival 24x10x40x recorder (287443) for $19, period, no rebates. Plus you get a free spindle of 50 CDRs...
WARNING: PCA INC
Devistar: that link goest to PCA Inc on Yahoo! Shopping.
I'm in the middle of a battle royale with these idiots. I bought both 2.5" and 5.25" usb 2.0 enclosures from them. The 2.5" immediately trashed a drive I put in it. I put it back in a usb 1.1 enclosure, repartitioned...
This is for people who use BMG Music Service. This just came in my email:
To take advantage of this offer, buy 1 CD at regular club price and get 3 free CDs, just click the "Have a promotion code?" link on the left side of our website's homepage. Enter promotion code "[code deleted]" in the box...
Just a note about Beauty and the Beast: the link says it'll be released October 8, 2002. If you check around at the usual places, you should start to see them taking pre-orders for that release date too. So, no need to order from out of country (if you're in the US) to get this great movie. I...
I got a pair as soon as they were available here. Returned 'em because the sound was totally tinny. Great idea. Not yet ready for prime time. (They were fun to play with for a couple of days, though.)
The $3 rebate for the CDRs is on the back page of the in-store rebate booklet. It's in a multi-item rebate form, and it's #27. The form states photocopies of the receipt AND UPC will be accepted.
!! I just found the form on the web site: link.
Not in this week's ad:
TDK 50 CDR 80 minutes $1.99 after two rebates. Here's a link (fixed). If that doesn't work, search for CDR80CB50T.
A heads up on one of the rebates: it's valid from 10/1/01 to 9/30/02 with a limit of 3, so if you've already bought these another time at Circuit City with...
Here's another pre-release deal on the Harry Potter DVD: If you order it from Costco, either online or in the store, they will ship it to you for $17.49, including shipping. In addition, they'll include a certificate good for redemption in store for a dvd of one of the following: Little...
ALERT!! - Just got off the phone number listed on the rebate. The guy there said they are asking customers NOT to send in anything until they get the problem resolved about the form saying "limit ONE rebate". He said they should have an answer by Friday. The phone number is 800-288-8671.
By the...
