    No signal from video card

Unfortunately, there's not any option to do this--only to have it disable it if it detects the PCI-E card, but the lack of PCI-E detection was the problem in the first place, so that didn't do us much.

    No signal from video card

Errr, no, didn't flash the BIOS. Probably should have... Feel pretty silly actually. But, in desperation last night, we started fiddling some more with the settings in the BIOS, and set the motherboard to boot to the (non-existent) PCI (not PCI-E) card first. For some reason, this appears to...

    No signal from video card

Some more information that we just found out: When booting to the onboard video, but with the video card in the machine, the PCI-E video card does show up in the Device Manager The machine once, seemingly randomly, booted correctly, with signal coming through the PCI-E card. However, after a...

I believe we can, but only by changing the voltage of the Northbridge chipset as well. Worth a try, anyways.

    No signal from video card

This is definitely a possibility, except that it was just replaced 6 months ago. It's certainly possible for it to have died in that time, but would be odd. Unfortunately, we don't have another one that we can swap out to test with.

Could just the slot die, leaving everything working? I'd think that if something happened to the mobo to kill the slot, that there would be a lot more issues than just this.

    No signal from video card

Hi all, A friend of mine is having some issues with his desktop that we built a couple of years ago. I'll go through what the symptoms have been, and then go through what we've tried. It started a few months ago when seemingly out of the blue, the monitor stopped receiving input from the...

    Best Brand Laptop?

All of the Toshibas I have used suffered from one major pitfall--keyboard layout. Absolutely horrible... Unintuitive, terrible feeling and action... I hated them. They would do things like put the "Home" key where "Backspace" should be... Naturally, you go to hit backspace and hit home instead...

    Best Brand Laptop?

IBM. I have used their laptops for going on eight years, and have found them to be consistently excellent. Built like tanks (unlike Dells and some Toshibas... and I have dropped my fair share of IBMs, too, and they are still ticking), excellent keyboard layout (unlike the Toshibas)... I love...

    New House Wired With Cat5....

One thing I will add is that if any of you ever build a house, make sure you have the builders install cable chases. Nothing more than a straight 3" PVC pipe running through the walls from attic to basement in a few strategic, hidden places (like a closet). Cut a little hole in it at each floor...

What's so good about Centrino vs P4?

Battery life is the big one. My T40 will go 4-5 hours on one charge.

    "Cheap" network-attached RAID solutions?

Thats pretty damn cool. Easier than the dedicated RAID NAS box I was gonna build... I just wish it supported more than two drives :(

    best firewall?

Im running Sygate. When I get back to school, Ill be running a seperate smoothwall box. But given that this isnt a choice for most home users, you'll have to go with a software solution. Like I said, I use Sygate, especially on my laptop, which is often used outside of my firewall box.

    @#*#@%*@!#* BURNED MY HARD DRIVE

Not likely. Most data recovery involves physically taking the disk apart to get at the platters and read them that way. Meaning you would need a clean room to prevent *any* dust from getting on the platters, not to mention the equipment to read, bit for bit, the data off of the freestanding...

    Old Hardware

I have a 20GB HDD that I got back in about '99 that still works fine and is in my main linux box. My DVD drive and floppy drive in my main Windows box are also from '99. The CD-ROM in my main Linux box is even older. Up until about a month ago, I had a pretty damn old Sound Blaster Live! card...

    Which Content Management System?

I looked at PHP-Nuke, until I started poking around their forums and started finding *lots* of widespread incidents of holes in the software letting others create admin accounts and deface the site. A problem that large is enough to scare me off.

    Which Content Management System?

Shortly here I will be building a new site, and with it will need a beefier content management system that the WordPress I am using now. Foremost among the requirements are that it be able to support a members-only section. I would also like it to be able to let the users register themselves, so...

    SATA Hard Drive Help

Get the drivers, put them on a disk, and when the XP install is booting and says at the bottom "press blah to load third party scsi drivers" (or something along those lines), press the button and load the drivers from the disk.

    Question about running two harddrives

Linux. Last I reinstalled Windows I formatted FAT32 so that my linux partition could write to it if needed. Unfortunately, Windows only supports FAT16, 32, and NTFS, so FAT32 was really my only choice.

    Are these $130 headphones good?

Grados. I have a pair of SR-60s that I paid about $70 for, and they sound like headphones costing twice as much, and like speakers costing ten times as much. It is much cheaper to make a good sounding pair of headphones than a speaker--they are a good investment. The grados are the best I have...

Centrino Notebook not detecting roommate's wireless router/network?

You may try some of the wardriving tools out there, like airsnort or netstumbler. Also, when his computer is connected, it should tell you what network it is connected to. Network Properties will tell you.

Laptop theft - How vulnerable am I?

I cant comment on traveling with a laptop, but I do frequently travel with a good deal of rather expensive camera equipment, and the same things apply to that. Like others said, keep it in view *at all times*. Never, ever, take your eyes off of it. Even better, have a firm grip on it at all...

How good is AC97 audio (on-board, I mean!)?

For normal usage, I think you will be fine. Its certainly nothing great, but if all you are doing is listening to MP3s and playing the occasional game, you shouldnt have a problem.

    Opinions on Build for Friend

Yeah, you would probably be better off with a gig. In fact, I know you would be. Also, if possible, try upping it to PC400/pc3200. It will give you a bit more headroom. Other than that... Im jealous, nice system.

Building a machine for video editing?

Reliability and price. Stringing together either two 80s or two 120s would be more expensive, in addition to essentially doubling the chances of catastrophic data loss.

Building a machine for video editing?

I would prefer to build it for her. I dont mind doing routine maintenance for her, and Dell will rip her a new one if she tries to buy anything moderately high-end from them. Unfortunately, RAID, or even a Raptor or multiple SATAs are out of the picture. I am definitely going to get her one...

Building a machine for video editing?

Yeah, I think I will upgrade the RAM. What about the video card? Does she need something like an All in Wonder? If not, Ima drop something like a 9200 in there and save some money. How is that microsoft software? How much does it cost? How powerful is it?

Building a machine for video editing?

OK, I have a friend who wants a machine for video editing. She is a local photographer, and does a good bit of digital work in that realm, but neither of us do any video. She would like to start working with video, both out of a digital video camera and especially exploring combining the mediums...

How long will this RAM last me?

OK, so as I am sure many around here have seen, Newegg currently has a pretty good deal going for some Mushkin pc3200 RAM. I need some new RAM anyways, but here is my problem--I plan on building a whole new system in about 4-6 months when the new generation of mobos and such come out, and this...
