720p TV Claims to Have a 1080p Native Display?

Probably because it made it easier to scale to 4:3 PC resolutions - 768 vertical is to match the PC resolution of 1024x768. Or because it was cheaper to manufacture than even 720p. Or both.

So how did the PS3 strategy fare?

Sorry for the stupid question - but how is the PS3 more powerful? I thought the 360 had a better gpu - hence inherently better graphics than the PS3. (512mb R500-based GPU + 10mb EDRAM vs 256mb g7xxx based). Not to mention the 360 has a better scaler (I think the Ps3 has a weird...

Impulse bought a bunch of stuff - Need advise for GPU

Judging by the fact that he used the words "bollocks" and "lads" I would think that he is based in the UK. In any case sorry to hear about the gf (or in this case ex-gf). But to answer your query - yes it would be worth the time (and coin) to upgrade the 8800gt - it might be able to run...

23" Monitor at ~5' - will BR be noticeable?

Better colors? Doubt it. To save space, both DVD and Bluray videos are encoded in the 4:2:0 color space which is far off from broadcast quality (4:2:2) or uncompressed (4:4:4). Although some "home made" DVDs are actually 4:1:1 due to being filmed on a DVCam.

Encode PC Games to AC3 into SPDIF passthrough?!

Sorry - don't think you can do this without a dedicated card the supports Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect, such as the Auzentech Prelude 7.1, etc. Basically these soundcards convert your audio into a 640kbits (DD) / 1.5mbits (DTS) 5.1 stream that feeds into your receiver.

Weird issue with TV - any suggestions?

TV has been crapping out on my lately - this is a Sony Edge Lit LCD that I bought a year or so ago. Problem is that when I turn on the TV, one side of the screen will randomly turn black or at least look smudgy. Problem persists until I flex or bend the screen, after which the screen will be...

How far can graphics in video games go on?

I think what he's trying to say is that how much will costs ramp up in order to have games that truly replicate real life. Considering the development costs of games nowadays, the amount of dollars and human capital needed to develop a game with a sprawling metropolis of 100,000+ people must be...

SF Bay Area: Sonic.net Fusion broadband 20mbps/1mbps + unlimited phone service $39.95

Not much of a price reduction - bill went from $53 after tax to $49.30 after the so-called $10 price cut. Looks like one of the "FCC" taxes went up to $6.25 - which is the maximum amount the FCC allows companies to charge for recouping landline costs.

    HD fraud?

As a part time filmmaker I have to say that unfortunately, any camera under $10k won't get you close to 720p resolution. We used to use Sony Z1s for shooting (pro version of the FX1) and while it said 1080i, based on tests, the actual effective resolution of these cams during motion were about...

Whew, just threw down some serious money...

Bob - you're not missing much. Switching between the Lossless codecs and the lossy ones I can't tell any difference through my speakers. IMO the largest improvement was from low bitrate DD/DTS (~384kbits for DD and 768kbits for DTS) to full bitrate DD and DTS (640kbits for DD and 1536kbits...

    4850 vs 9800GTX+ for 1920 x 1080

Disagree - look at other reviews, like the one from Anandtech. Shows the 4850 beating the 9800GTX+ in many games at 1920x1200, which is close the resolution OP will be using. http://anandtech.com/show/2556/15

    4850 vs 9800GTX+ for 1920 x 1080

At 1920x1080 I'd say you don't need a whole lot of vram unless you're planning on using a ton of AA. Of the games you listed, all of them won't require a very powerful GPU to play on (it is Blizzard, so they try to target the lowest denominator in terms of hardware requirements) The 4850 and...

    Gtx 470/ ati 5850

Also, while it may not be a dealbreaker for you, both cards output audio via HDMI differently. The Radeon does bitstream DTSMA, DolbyTruHD, The Geforce does 7.1 LPCM over HDMI - and not bitstream. If you're deciding to put any of these cards thru a receiver, the radeon is the better...

    Playstation 4 using PowerVR-gpu?

...except towards the end of the N64's lifespan, developers figured ways to optimize textures for the 64's GPU. Though the 64 couldn't handle large textures, developers could trick the system by using multiple smaller textures and piece them together, giving the illusion of one large texture...

    Q9550 stock temperatures -- reseat heatsink/fan?

Having the same heatsink as you do, I am pretty confident that Zalman isn't good for cooling. In fact, it's not even as quiet as it's advertised to be! With ambient temps of around 20c, my CPU temps always hover around 40c idle. Get something better - I got a Thermalright and immediately...

Might have to finally throw my Ultra in the trash.

What resolutions do you play at? That would help us determine if you will be bottlenecked or not. Also I think you should be fine with a 280 and that PSU, but don't quote me on that.

LOL, gotcha - I never thought about checking out Ebay for cables....or pretty much anything (due to bad experiences with a trader a long, long time ago) I might actually have to look into this....Monster cables are a rip at the prices you see at retail stores, but at ~$30 dollars..hmmm it is...

Might have to finally throw my Ultra in the trash.

As others have suggested on these forums, you're best bet is actually to get something cheaper like a GTX 260 216c or a 4870 as the newer cards will be coming out at the end of this year. I suggest you get a 260 now, save up for several months and then do a complete system overhaul at the...

Great Monitor...!! Now what do I do?

CPU is a little on the slow side - might want to consider upgrading that to a faster C2D or even a C2Q. Do not get another 8800GTS as it'll still be limited to 640MB of RAM and it's slower than say a single 260 216c / 4870 / 4890, etc. Not to mention the added complications of having SLI...

Many thanks for the great advice guys. Thought about this long and hard and realized that a regular C2Q would be more than sufficient for my needs. The problem with my current setup is my CPU - the old C2D can't maintain stability @ its current overclock, but the stock 1.83GHz speed is just...

    Best PC Speakers for 2009?

The "best" PC speakers are from 2004 because a) people don't buy new speakers every year, unlike video cards or cpu b) the people who do buy PC speakers either don't care too much about SQ or buy it just to have some sound come out of their PC (they may have a dedicated audiophile-grade system...
