*ALERT* Connect3D GTO No Longer Moddable!

I was successful with a connect3D card ordered from Newegg on 11.24. I first tried ATIflash and had no success. Then I made a boot disk, copied over the necessary files (flashrom, the bios on this page), and flashed the card with flashrom -f -p 0 <biosname>. Bingo! 16 pipes. Overclocked to...

Running Newcastle 3000+ at 2.3ghz

I've got an Epox 8KDA3J nF250. I've set the htt to 3x. I think dropping the VCC reduces my stability. I have a cheapo vid hsf I can probably stick on the chipset and get a little better performance. jaybee

Running Newcastle 3000+ at 2.3ghz

Only one way to find out. I've run my 2800+ at 270 htt (hmm 270/200 * 1.8 = 2.43GHz) and it looks like I'm limited by the board and not the chip. I suppose I should make more noise about this, but the chip can handle a lot more heat than the rest of the system. I ran mine flat out, testing...

Problem updating BIOS

I tried to update my Epox 8KDA3J the other day with the latest BIOS. Magic BIOS downloaded the bin & launched WinFlash to update. Well, it looked like it erased the BIOS (seemed to do something anyway), but when it tried to update it gave this message: The File's BIOS-Lock string does not...

Cannot boot from SATA drive

On the reinstall? No, I did it from Windows originally. I wanted to be able to set the cluster size -- I don't think you can from the Windows installation. jaybee

Cannot boot from SATA drive

I can't remember, but probably not. I've tried reinstalling WinXP several times. It loads the cd, starts the install process, then reboots. On the reboot, though, it stops where it always does (right away basically) with the message "A disk error has occurred". So I'm not having any luck...

Cannot boot from SATA drive

I've got an Epox 8kda3j nf250 board and a Hitachi Deskstar 7k250 SATA drive. I've also got a couple more PATA drives. I can't get the system to boot from the SATA drive alone. The boot process stops with the message "A disk error has occurred" before getting to the OS selection point. If I...

quick suggestions on a new computer build

Are you picking up memory at the same time as well? Sounds like you're a gamer -- a memory upgrade (to 512MB at least) is your best bet at this point, so if it's memory or mobo, get the memory. Now, if you're planning on getting both, great :) jaybee

Would a A64 3000+ be a huge upgrade over a P4 2.4B

Here's an article comparing the A64 to a couple PIVs, including some good gaming benchies. Unfortunately there is no 2.4B tested, but if you know how it compares to a 3.2C then you're in luck. A little digging will turn up better comparisons I'm sure. My guess is the A64 3000+ would be 25%...

Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro

My guess is the board is reporting the temperature incorrectly. Check for an updated BIOS to correct it. Regarding CnQ (Cool 'n Quiet), it lowers the fan speed (& voltage I believe) when the cpu is idle. In other words, the point is to run the fan at lower rpm. jaybee

The mobile Athlon 64 and motherboards

Anyone bought an A64 lately?

I'd like to hear who's selling what these days. Please post your chip (speed, retail vs oem), purchase date, vendor, & whether you received a C0 or CG core. Thanks. jaybee Edit: just saw that MonarchComputer is selling the 3000+ oem for $163, so I'm interested mainly in the 2800+ and 3000+.

The mobile Athlon 64 and motherboards

I agree with you about considering the board non-working. I think it would be helpful to list it (not necessarily as compatible), along with the circumstances. In the two examples I pointed out above, both users have done vmods -- although I'm not sure it was required in the second case. He...

The mobile Athlon 64 and motherboards

More info on the Epox board: one of the successful pairings with the mobile (mentioned in this thread) was accomplished with a voltage mod. The board defaults to .9v but does not lower the multiplier, preventing the system from booting. jaybee

The mobile Athlon 64 and motherboards

Seems like there's a lot of dogma and drum-beating going on. I'm looking for information. I've read the messages in this thread several times, as well as scouring other boards. I've been interested in the mobile chip because it: until recently, is the only sure bet for a CG chip under or...

The mobile Athlon 64 and motherboards

I think there's another thread regarding the second case -- I remember reading that overclocking through clockgen was successful for him. Is it a PITA? Absolutely. But I'd live with it for a month or two if a BIOS release fixed it after that point. Not booting at all is the deal-breaker for...

The mobile Athlon 64 and motherboards

I've seen a couple postings. Here's one I can find quickly. This is another example. I should register on the boards and ask em myself. It looks like it's pretty hit-or-miss at this point. I'd love to buy a mobile & the Epox with the expectation of a mobile-friendly BIOS, but then...

The mobile Athlon 64 and motherboards

Does anyone have reliable info on the Epox nForce3 boards with mobiles? I've heard two successful accounts; in the first, a desktop was used to flash the BIOS. In the second, I saw no mention of a desktop chip -- it seemed the board was mobile-compatible out of the box. Of course, it looks...

Help selecting mobo for mobile A64

Is it a board revision or BIOS update for the Gigabyte? Thought it was the latter. The Asus sounds great but unfortunately I'm committed to ordering this week. My current parts (cpu/mobo/etc) are spoken for. I suppose I could gamble on the Asus... I'd hate to be stuck with 220HTT though. jaybee

Help selecting mobo for mobile A64

Thanks for the reply. I've been following that thread pretty closely. I must have missed the edit to the original post about the Gigabyte. Anyway, I would like feedback regarding overclocks and stability with 3 ram sticks. I've seen a max oc for the ASRock of 250-260. I'd like to go higher...

A64 ram question

I've read that memory bandwidth is more important to the A64 than latency. Is this the consensus opinion? I'm trying to decide between CAS3 PC3700 and CAS2.5 PC3500 (Kingmax). Thanks jaybee

Help selecting mobo for mobile A64

I've been scouring the net for a couple weeks now, gathering info about the A64 and components. It seems like choosing a motherboard is a complicated & risky proposition. I've got my eye on a couple, but I'm open to other suggestions. Anyway, here are my criteria: mobile-compatible I want...

Poll: How did your 9500 mod turn out?

It's definitely a crapshoot. My 9500 is plugging away with just 4 pipelines -- one or more of the others are bad. I bought in early when it looked like it was a sure thing; now I'm stuck with far less of a card than I expected. jaybee
26. J

Poll: How did your 9500 mod turn out?

Nope. It's gotta be getting enough power anyway, or it wouldn't be stable. I'm just guessing that high-pitched squeal is an overworked voltage regulator somewhere. jaybee

Poll: How did your 9500 mod turn out?

JuicyFruit, try underclocking your 9500 to see if the noise goes away. My guess is you're drawing too much power. jaybee

If the 9500 software mod doesn't work, how will it compare to the 9500 PRO?

Glad to help. Go to the 3dmark Search & Compare and select jdbuhr@bellsouth.net as the user email. You'll find tests at different settings for the 4400 and 9500np. The 4400 scores quite a bit higher on my system at the settings used. jaybee PS I ran the 9500np at settings I expected I would...

If the 9500 software mod doesn't work, how will it compare to the 9500 PRO?

This may be a touchy subject, but geez I am tired of seeing 3dmark results at 10x7 with no AA. Not many people are going to run a 9500 Pro or better with those settings. I don't run anything without AA anymore. btw I am using a 9500np for the last week or two, GF4 4400 before that. Anyway...

Poll: How did your 9500 mod turn out?

Wow, 5 people cannot get 9700 mode? That's odd... if nothing else, try the defogger trick. Just make sure you connect 1&2 only, and leave resistor on 2-3. Are these W98 users? I don't remember, what is the software option for W9x? jaybee

Poll: How did your 9500 mod turn out?

But why is software more successful? If you mention it above, sorry I missed it. I thought those control circuits were pretty simple, but maybe shorting the points cooks something. Moot at this point probably; I don't think anyone is going to fudge with the card now that software hacks are...

Poll: How did your 9500 mod turn out?

Hmm, software mod quite a bit more successful than hardware mod... is it wrong bios/drivers, a physical problem with/due to the mod, or statistically insignificant? Goes along with what I've heard elsewhere about software working more often than hardware. Why why why? jaybee
36. J

Poll: How did your 9500 mod turn out?

Poll: How did your 9500 mod turn out?

I agree, jasonja. The reported success rate for software is higher, but I think that is probably due to flashing wrong bios with hardware mod. Software mod doesn't require bios flashing, hardware does. I tried a bunch of different bioses and had different results. Some bioses gave me 2d...
