Running Newcastle 3000+ at 2.3ghz

I've got an Epox 8KDA3J nF250. I've set the htt to 3x. I think dropping the VCC reduces my stability. I have a cheapo vid hsf I can probably stick on the chipset and get a little better performance. jaybee

Only one way to find out. I've run my 2800+ at 270 htt (hmm 270/200 * 1.8 = 2.43GHz) and it looks like I'm limited by the board and not the chip. I suppose I should make more noise about this, but the chip can handle a lot more heat than the rest of the system. I ran mine flat out, testing...

Problem updating BIOS

I tried to update my Epox 8KDA3J the other day with the latest BIOS. Magic BIOS downloaded the bin & launched WinFlash to update. Well, it looked like it erased the BIOS (seemed to do something anyway), but when it tried to update it gave this message: The File's BIOS-Lock string does not...

On the reinstall? No, I did it from Windows originally. I wanted to be able to set the cluster size -- I don't think you can from the Windows installation. jaybee

I can't remember, but probably not. I've tried reinstalling WinXP several times. It loads the cd, starts the install process, then reboots. On the reboot, though, it stops where it always does (right away basically) with the message "A disk error has occurred". So I'm not having any luck...

quick suggestions on a new computer build

Are you picking up memory at the same time as well? Sounds like you're a gamer -- a memory upgrade (to 512MB at least) is your best bet at this point, so if it's memory or mobo, get the memory. Now, if you're planning on getting both, great :) jaybee

Would a A64 3000+ be a huge upgrade over a P4 2.4B

Here's an article comparing the A64 to a couple PIVs, including some good gaming benchies. Unfortunately there is no 2.4B tested, but if you know how it compares to a 3.2C then you're in luck. A little digging will turn up better comparisons I'm sure. My guess is the A64 3000+ would be 25%...

My guess is the board is reporting the temperature incorrectly. Check for an updated BIOS to correct it. Regarding CnQ (Cool 'n Quiet), it lowers the fan speed (& voltage I believe) when the cpu is idle. In other words, the point is to run the fan at lower rpm. jaybee

The mobile has 1MB cache while the desktop has 512k cache. The extra cache is worth 200 MHz in their rating scheme. jaybee

More info on the Epox board: one of the successful pairings with the mobile (mentioned in this thread) was accomplished with a voltage mod. The board defaults to .9v but does not lower the multiplier, preventing the system from booting. jaybee

Help selecting mobo for mobile A64

Is it a board revision or BIOS update for the Gigabyte? Thought it was the latter. The Asus sounds great but unfortunately I'm committed to ordering this week. My current parts (cpu/mobo/etc) are spoken for. I suppose I could gamble on the Asus... I'd hate to be stuck with 220HTT though. jaybee

It's definitely a crapshoot. My 9500 is plugging away with just 4 pipelines -- one or more of the others are bad. I bought in early when it looked like it was a sure thing; now I'm stuck with far less of a card than I expected. jaybee

This may be a touchy subject, but geez I am tired of seeing 3dmark results at 10x7 with no AA. Not many people are going to run a 9500 Pro or better with those settings. I don't run anything without AA anymore. btw I am using a 9500np for the last week or two, GF4 4400 before that. Anyway...

Wow, 5 people cannot get 9700 mode? That's odd... if nothing else, try the defogger trick. Just make sure you connect 1&2 only, and leave resistor on 2-3. Are these W98 users? I don't remember, what is the software option for W9x? jaybee

I agree, jasonja. The reported success rate for software is higher, but I think that is probably due to flashing wrong bios with hardware mod. Software mod doesn't require bios flashing, hardware does. I tried a bunch of different bioses and had different results. Some bioses gave me 2d...
